If you're using Dachsbun (pure Fairy) as the second in the fusion then it doesn't matter what the first pokemon is beyond that it is either *pure* Steel or that its *first type* is Steel. This widens the pool of candidates considerably. The best ones are Steel-types that have good Attack and don't rely on their special attack. If you get Heatran (I encounter these surprisingly often at the Volcano) then you may want to use Heatran as your second in the fusion, and a pure fairy or first-type-fairy-type pokemon as the first in the DNA splicers. The best candidates are heavy special-attacking fairies that don't mind middling or slower speed, but mixed attacking is fine too. DNA splicers always use from the first pokemon: (first) type, nature, passive (if unlocked); Second pokemon donates their (second) type, current moves (can veto each one if you want to), total moveset for the Memory Mushroom, and their Ability (in this case we are trying for Well-Baked Body or Flash Fire). Their base stats are averaged (and I believe the same goes for their IVs?)

So the best trio for a fresh account to try and win first time is probably Bulbasaur, Piplup and Poplio. I know, there's no Fire type or setup sweeper, but being able to exploit BOTH the Mega Ring and the GMax Band should they drop makes it too worth bringing a Gen 1 starter, you need the Fairy & Steel duo that is Empoleon and Primarina for the last boss and Venu works better with them than Zard does, being a sleep setter and being able to come in and soak Electric attacks easily (instead of having ALL THREE share a weakness)
