Isuzu MU-X Custom Rear Drawer System - How I Built My 4X4 Drawer Setup

  • Hey Guys and Gals!
    In this video I show you all the steps that i took to create my custom rear drawer system with fridge slide and slide out table.
    I started by removing the Isuzu Mu-x rear 3rd row seats, after this I took some detailed measurements and began designing the setup I was after.
    I took a trip to Bunnings hardware store were I collected all the parts necessary to build my drawer system. They cut all my wood to the correct size and I also got my marine grade carpet and all my fittings and fixtures.
    The parts list -
    - Marine Carpet Grey 2x2m
    -12mm plywood sheet 2m x 1.8m
    - 45mm x 850mm beams for supports
    - 3 different size wood screws
    - 8 x tiedown D rings
    - Titan Single 900mm drawer
    - Dunn and Watson fridge and table slide
    - Dunlop Artificial grass adhesive
    - 10mm Bolts assorted lengths with nuts and washers
    - Black wood paint
    Tool List -
    - Circular saw
    - Utility knife
    - Adhesive application scraper
    - Staple gun
    - Drill
    - Drill Bits
    - Phillips head screw drive (drill adapter)
    - Wood marking pencil
    - Measuring Tape
    There is a basic list of some of the parts and tools I used during making my drawer system.
    I decided to go with a single drawer and fridge box design to give my the most amount of versatility and space with my setup. I also made enough room behind the drawer system for my secondary AGM battery and 12v setup.
    I'm super happy with the out come and hope you enjoyed watching this video! : D

    Great job Nick. I've watched it three times now so I get it right. I'll make pretty much the exact same but I want to keep my factory cargo barrier in place too. Probably means I'll need to chock it up off the base platform about 150mm or so. Just hope it leaves enough room for my 140Ah Giant battery...

    Cool. DIY is great when it comes off as you planned. I did a similar set up for my grand vitara - I had to though as none of the shop stuff fits (only had around 600mm depth to play with, everything is longer), so draws, fridge slide all custom.. Yours looks a lot neater and I was kinda relieved to see you strap yours down as well. I did that too and I've wondered ever since if it was a crap idea.
    Because space is limited in the GV, I also made use of the void under the shelf (like you had to raise the platform up to the level of the lip) I stick spares (air filter, belts) under there, i can access it by moving the rear seat forward, which is fine when you actually need the spares to dig them out - only had to once so far to switch air filters after eating too much bulldust.
    Look forward to seeing more mods.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому

      If you could get a really narrow custom tank made it could be useful but it could only be like 35mm tall so not really that much space. I dont think ill end up doing anything underneath as the space is too small really. If you built it to sit higher it could be useful though 😀

    Nick, great job and i would love to do the same but in NSW it is illegal to remove 3rd row seats unless engineered and re certified as it changes the seating compliance. Not sure about Qld or other states.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому +1

      Thanks alot! It gives you alot more space with the seats out. You can always build a system over the seats if your worried about legalities. I know drifta make them to tie down over the top of the 3rd row. They just sit up a little higher. 😊👍

    Hi Nick, This was a great vid. I am wondering what your thoughts would be for a single sided version? I have an additional small person to fit into the third row of my MUX, and was trying to work out the best solution for carrying a bit more gear, whilst keeping it all nice and restrained... if you get my drift?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  4 роки тому

      I think a single sided version would work really well. I have seen quite a few people do this with the single TITAN drawer and the XTM single drawer as well in the MU-X. It gives you lots more storage space and keeps everything nice and organised.

    Great build. I want to do something similar for my Colorado 7. Just one question, how do you undo the spare tyre? If it is the same system as the Colorado 7 you wind it down from inside. But it looks like the base you made covers that area. Is it the same with MU-X? Do you have to take it out to release the spare?

    I’m thinking of doing the same in mine, just wondering how much space it has created under the new floor with the seats removed?
    Is there any good useable space?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  2 роки тому

      Hi Steve, there is a small section under the front of usable space but it is pretty small. Only about 3cm in height underneath. If you wanted to use a bit of storage underneath you may need to raise the base and run the supports the opposite way to mine to give 2 sectioned spots under the drawers. 😀

  • @vanllinx
    @vanllinx 3 роки тому +1

    Finally got round to doing this (kinda). Do the drawers bolt into the ply and the 4x2 underneath, or just the ply? If just the ply then the only things securing your fridge and drawer is the swivel hooks to the anchor points? (i.e the false floor is floating)

    Great job, and thanks for all your vids on the mux.
    Just wondering if the standard twin titan drawers with built in fridge slide would fit. (www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/titan-rear-drawer-unit-1070mm.html)
    Looks like they are 1070 wide and you bottom board is 1050 wide. Plus if they were to somehow fit - I'm assuming there wouldn't be enough room out the back for a battery behind those normal drawers as they are 990 long (which is why I assume you put it behind the fridge slide)?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  3 роки тому

      May be tight. You would be best off getting the cargo barrier installed first and building drawers to suit.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  4 роки тому +1

      There under the seat plastic side trims and the centre plastic trim. You pop them up and you can get to the bolts.

    Hi Nick, I was a bit uncertain about your tie down method and if it would be strong enough in an emergency situation. I used 3mm x 25 mm flat steel to make up brackets which I attached to the deck and screwed to the existing outer seat mounting holes . I think this is stronger than using the made fridge enclosure ply.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  3 роки тому

      I've changed the tie down method to 4 metal turn buckles rated to 400kg.

    Hi Nick, I have a MUX as well. So could I borrow your plan to build the same setup? What is the exact dimension of the board? It appears that the section near the foot end is deeper. Do you need more shim? What is the height from the top of the drawers to the roof once installed? Thank you very much.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому

      Ill send you through some detailed dimensions tomorrow 😁

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому +3

      Hey T! The dimensions of the false floor/base board are 1050mm wide x 1030mm long and it is 12mm structural ply. It sits on 850mm long x 70mm wide x 45mm deep pine wood planks to raise it to clear the boot plastic trim. The height from the drawer to the roof is 550mm at the back or 670mm in further. The height from the fridge box to the roof is 240mm at the back or in further 360mm. When i say at the back i mean were the headliner dips lower were the rear boot light is. Hope that made sense 😁😁👍👍

    • @tyik
      @tyik 5 років тому +1

      I think the rear of the boot (towards the rear door) is lower. Your platform appears very level. Anyway I will adjust it. I am going to use those battery box to sit behind the fridge. Thank you for your help. Looking forward to your adventures with the MUX.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  5 років тому

      They all have little plastic clips holding them in, if just a matter of pulling one side off and then the other side and they should just pop up. I think the middle is just held on by a few clips so i think you just pop it straight up.

    If you took out the second row of seats in an MU-X, is there enough length there for an adult male to sleep? I know a lot of people put a full-on draw system inside the vehicle and use a tent on top to sleep in, but I've often wondered if you could keep the draw system low enough, at least on one side if you use a cooler/fridge, for a single person to to sleep on top.
