That's not true. Copyright literally protects from someone making minor changes to a product and selling it as their own. If I added mint to Coca Cola, I can't sell that "Mint Coca Cola" drink because that would be of the copyright Coca Cola has. That's a 'derivative' work, it could not exist without the majority of (or at least the most important part of) the pre-existing material. If I were to make Cola Cake using Coca Cola, Then I would be protected from copyright law and I would be able to be sell it, since I could easily make Cola Cake with any other kind of cola - if I removed Coca Cola I would still have a cake, even if it weren't as nice. In this instance, Barbra Streisand is a derivative work - if you took Boney M's samples out of the song, there wouldn't be a song left. Compare that to something like "Fire" by The Prodigy - it takes the "I AM THE GOD OF HELLFIRE" sample from Arthur Brown's "Fire" , but without that sample the majority of the song would still exist.
