Senegal parrots are notorious for wanting to sit on your shoulder.. I have owned two of them and both would gladly stay there all day long if I let them.. for whatever reason that species of parrot loves shoulder rides..

I have a Senegal Parrot(about 4 months old) and with never having a parrot before it was the right choice for me! Mine is quiet most of times, unless We leave the room, he tends to scream! He's fun to play with and can already laugh, and say a few words, even does a cute little chatter. I call him our little clown! I will say mine is extremely messy eater, I find most of his food in my hair at times from him flinging it around lol. But over all this breed of parrot was a great fit for a newbie like me!

yea, my sun, pumpkin, is the sweetest baby ever even though he is very loud. he likes to fly to me and whenever I’m gone, he will sho and scream. he always wags his tail when he sees me and it’s so cute.
You can't hand tame properly then

Parrots definitely don't just mimic. They often use words and phrases in contextual and very clever, intelligent ways. This is really expanded upon by Irene Pepperburg and her extensive study of African Grey parrots. One owner of an African Grey parrot described how her bird could sense if she came home and had a bad day, he would say "it's okay buddy, its okay" this was a phrase she said to him, however, he was able to understand the application and context, as well as the emotional sentiment and would say that to comfort her. These animals are phenomenally intelligent. Another clever example is an African grey, his owner was a neat freak. when the table would be cluttered with stuff and need a cleaning, the bird could sense it was time to clean soon and would actually make the sound of the spray bottle to remind the owner she needed to clean soon. This is certainly more then just mindlessly mimicking their caretakers. Which again was proven extensively by Irene Pepperburg in her renowned book "The Alex Studies"

Thank you for the video. I used to have a jandaya conure for 22 years. Now I've got a senegal parrot. The senegal parrot is much more quiet and likes to chew and bite everything.

I got a Senegal Parrot. He says "Hey There", "Woof", laughs and other weird stuff. I pick him up and let him use the sink/washroom in the morning. Hardly every poops on me, flys over and uses his cage or perch. I have some what trained him to come when called. He will stand on one foot and wave the other foot when he wants to be picked up. Followed by saying "Hey There" over and over.
My parrot primarily uses his cage for sleeping. His favorite toy is a swing, even sleeps on it. Any tips on bird beds? my bird never uses them, rips them apart.
Will C I had a tent but got rid of it. They can eat the fuzz and get sick and get blockages.

I've had my female Senegal for 10 years now and she chooses to sleep in a bird tent every night. She is free flighted and cage-free free so it is up to her where she chooses to sleep. She loves her tent bed or ultimately would love to be in my bed, but that's not an option unless it's just for an afternoon nap. I put cotton terry cloth on the floor of her tent that she enjoy chewing on as she falls asleep. This is also very helpful in regards to parrot foot health as it offers a nightly break from standing on a perch. When my yellow-naped Amazon reached his mid-30s I noticed some stress on his foot pads as a result of refusing to sleep on anything but his perch. I gave him the option of different sizes and types of perches and even put in a 2 by 2 wrapped in suede which was very helpful at eliminating pressure points due to the flat surface and that worked very well at healing his lizard skin. This likely occurred because he was so huge and very heavy. This issue is not as likely for smaller birds, but something I'm aware of and focused in advance to prevent. The bird bed seems to be a wonderful solution that's a win-win for us all. My parrotlets have all been given the tiny tents, but so far none have chosen to sleep in them.

@@aprilkitten yes my Senegal just loves ripping up his little hut houses and then I just buy another one only for him to destroy it. I got them to let his foot rest while sleeping also. Maybe I’ll try a tent or something else. I also got flat perches that he shreds to nothing so that didn’t work. He’s 26 yrs old

Honestly from what I observed, young Senegals tend to be sweet. But as they get older and hormonal, hell breaks loose. They tend to have biting/nipping issues. They do get loud, so don't let articles fool you. They also tend to be a 1 person bird. Senegals need lots of training and brain stimulation because they are very smart birds.
My Senegal just turned 10 this year and she is as sweet as ever, but I think that has to do with the fact that I'm retired and now able to work from home and can spend the entire day devoted and interacting with my birds. My yellow nape taught my Senegal to talk and my Senegal is teaching my parrotlets to talk. My Senegal started repeating my command, "Come here Squishy Bird" and to my surprise the parrotlet started saying the exact same phrase. Too cute! My Senegal is rather quiet which, for Senegals, is usually a direct result of the level of noise in the home... as opposed to my Amazon Parrots and Umbrella Cockatoo that are very loud no matter what! My yellow naped parrot Sinbad, loves to use his voice as a weapon and enjoys irritating people and thinks he's quite funny. He was my first Amazon parrot. My husband bought Sinbad for me for my birthday in 1980, I had no idea how dramatically my life was about to change. I was instantly addicted and have been training parrots for 40 years... or I should say, they have been training ME! 🐦🤣💗👍

El T Our son’s Senegal - called Karl - was for sure a character: very loud (usually at 5 am....), very selective when it came to food and basically a mini-chainsaw when it came to one of his revenge activities whenever we left him alone. This tiny bird managed to take a solid wooden window apart in only a few hours. I am still laughing when I think about his flying capabilities...always landed somewhere on the floor and was walking around as if he owned the place. We had to install a staircase for him so that he could walk back up to his cage - because he wouldn’t accept to be picked up. A beast in some respect - but a lovely one..
My Senegal Earl was so sweet when younger, once the eyes changed and he got extremely hormonal. I have some pretty bad scars from him. I don’t handle him very much when he is hormonal because he will go from doing his mating dance to full on attack mode in the blink of an eye. Still the silliest bird ever, he loves to do somer saults and hanging upside down all the time..
You should do a comparison after they reach hormonal age.. my Senegal was great and sweet till the hormones kicked in, their bite is severe.. I can no longer let him on my shoulder..
I have both. Senegal’s have manners, sweet temperament, they are happy to be with you. Suns know they are pretty, sassy and respond well to clicker training...hint hint.

I have one, nonstop screaming and it bites me. It will act all cute and nice, but when I pick it up it is like, I’m bout to ruin this whole mans career.
CT- 2273 hahahaha. I can see that happening. Positive reinforcement is the key. Keep trying to form a bond with the bird. You’ll have success eventually!!!
I’m pet her everyday lightly, she also likes biting her toes when I pick her up, and she hurts herself.
Stoby Stub I’m looking for the right bird just when I settle on one I see a bad review on the breed This guy loves Senegal’s there is a woman who talks about them being nice and then attacks. I’ve. Checked outConures ring necks Quaker every time I think I found the right one I see horror stories. Also 2-4 they can get hormonal and be attacking constantly. If they throw up on you they want to mate and they will attack. Ugh. Guess we have to jump in and deal it will be worth the cons to get the pros. Happy parroting.
These are pretty young birds to do comparison on. Once adolescence hit you will be with absolutely different personalities.... I think for most birds there's a seasonal change as well dur to hormones and all. I would come back after 5 years to know what the difference is really like.

I really want to get a sun conure, the only thing that putting me off is I heard its very loud. other than that I love it, I mainly love the way it looks. are there any other birds that look like sun conures/ have the same personality but are quite?
Af7 look at green cheek conures, they could have a lot of colour variations and are way more quiet

I raised a Sun Conure from a baby. Whatever I ate, she ate. She grew quite large for her species due to eating lots of meat. She was also quite alpha and pretty much fearless. Since I had zero knowledge about birds I trained her like a dog complete with hand commands. She is now pushing 20 years which makes her a very senior bird for her species. As with any pet, you get out of them whatever you put into them. She potty trained first day, and was eager to please off of just praise & petting. Food was never a reward.

@@titanhound6671 I mean birds CAN eat meat. Not generally very much but they can (even if he is joking). I had zebra finches as a kid and we fed them berries, seeds, fruits, veggies etc as well as... Boiled chicken eggs and egg shells (Not the entire egg all at once obi). They lived really really long lives for zebra finches and were super healthy.

I may be getting a 4 yr old female. All my parrots are rescues. 2 green cheek conures, one boy and one girl, then 2 boys, a Quaker and a Moustache Parakeet.

I have 3 Senegals (a female aged 25 who I've had since 4 months old, a male aged 22+ - a rescue I've had for 16 years - and an unsexed bird aged about 10 - another rescue I've had for 4 years) and a male Sun Conure aged 19.
My Sun Conure is very loving but can be VERY noisy, especially if anything alarms them. He is also slightly bonkers and will chew anything.
My youngest Senegal is an utter sweetie who never bites, can be handled confidently and thoroughly enjoys it. My big male was totally untouchable when I got him, but can now be stroked out of his cage and never bites. However, he defends his cage against all comers. My female is generally lovely and playful and enjoys petting, but can very occasionally bite unpredictably. And it REALLY hurts. Senegals are really quiet and can be trained to talk.
My 7mnth senegal would kill my other birds, he also attacks my 13yr old grrrrr. He is very tame, not sure why he attacks her x

If they are not clipped start flight recall training them with clicker. Look for Parrot Wizard on UA-cam. Mine are recall trained and fly in the yard and return.

I’ve had mines for 26 yrs and even thou I’m his “Female Master” and is sweet with me while I’m alone, the minute my husband comes in he will bite me in a second! He prefers male genders and will turn on me if a male is present. It’s sad

Highly recommend a Senegal. Lorikeets have complicated diets and African greys are overall just a handful.

Dabs Sidike thank you for your question. Birds are notorious for pooping all over the place. Some people try to train their birds to poop on command but unfortunately that’s not recommended. Birds trained to poop on command often hold their poop and can get very ill from doing so. A better option might be to try to train your bird to poop before coming out of their cage. Training that behavior is often easier. You do have to be mindful that Senegal’s usually poop every 15-20 mins. Putting them back in the cage to poop and then taking them back out is something you can try. Wish you luck!!!!
I have a Senegal parrot his name is Leo he is going to be 5 this year I was considering I'm getting another Senegal parrot to keep him company obviously in separate cages I was also looking at a sun conure as well any suggestions or ideas I need to make a decision in the next couple weeks there's a guy in Toronto selling a Senegal parrot baby for $550 unless somebody else knows a cheaper breeder I would really appreciate that if you could let me know I currently live in Kitchener Ontario thank you.
Terry Williams getting another Senegal would be a good option. I can tell you that most Senegal’s bond more with their humans than other birds. I speaking from experience of having caiques and suns. They tend to be a bit territorial from my experience.

Leo seems quite happy He's currently sitting on my shoulder right now. But yeah, I'd love to get him another one. I didn't have one about three years ago a female and all he wanted to do is just kill her and chase after her. But I took him to visit a friend of mine in Orangeville, Ontario. Canada and she had a Senegal. Leon was crazy about her, but she can care less about him. So, I don't know. I really appreciate your advice though, perhaps in time. I will get another female.

I bought a 4 month old Sennie in 1996, who was supposed to be male but I found out was female when she was 9. 6 years later, I bought a baby Sun Conure.
Sennies are cute, quiet, extremely affectionate, intelligent, hyperactive and with a very infrequent but painful bite. She is currently sitting on my keyboard chasing my fingers. But be warned, they are the boss: if you REALLY upset them you will know about it!
Sun Conures are beautiful, affectionate and very playful but a bit easily alarmed and can be extremely loud.
Later, I adopted/rescued 2 more Sennies, a Meyers, a Blue Crowned Conure and 2 cockatiels. They are all great.
Is your senegal ok with your tiels, my 7mnth boy (senegal) would kill my tiels. Find it really hard to give them equal attention in seperate rooms. He does come in the lounge at night in his cage tho x
@@vanessafarber3043 I have a very strict policy: only birds with very similar beak sizes are allowed to mix. My cockatiels and my Sun Conure never mix with my Senegals or my Meyers. My Blue Crowned Conure does not like mixing with anything!

Hello! I bought 2 Cockatiels from a breeder about 1 year ago. They still dont step up onto me and they keep on getting aggressive towards me whenever I try to change their water or food. 1 is male and 1 is female, so is it possible that they could have bonded to each other? I also have 2 lovebirds who are very noisy and they bite a lot! The girl I bought them from said that they were hand tame and that they adjusted to her in 3 days, but when I bought the lovebirds it took them about 2 weeks for them to adjust to me.. but now they are starting to bite me nonstop when I try to take them out of the cage. I am selling all of them now (my 2 lovebirds and my 2 Cockatiels) because they are all so mean and they are not hand tame. I am now personally looking for a bird that is somewhat quiet, quieter than a sun conure. I am also looking for a bird that is friendly and that will stay hand tame. I’d prefer to buy a bird that talks to entertain me in some way, but I don’t really mind. I would like a bird that will cuddle with me and be playful. I personally struggle with depression,anxiety, and self harm so I thought that my lovebirds and cockatiels would be helpful, but they aren’t. I need a bird with all the qualities I stated above. I would love to train the bird to be an emotional support animal for me. I just don’t want to buy a bird that is expensive, I can only buy a bird that costs $300 or less. What bird do you think I should purchase? Please help me.
Yusur's Life thanks for your question! I’m sorry you’re having to rehome your parrots. I know it’s very difficult when your parrots don’t reciprocate love. They’re very complicated creatures. If you have made your decision on rehoming your birds I recommend getting a green cheek conure. They’re a bit less noisy than suns and they can be very very entertaining. They are also in your price range. Senegals and Meyers are also very nice options but can run you > 350-500 USD. My favorite parrot of all time is a Caique. They’re a lot more expensive but they are definitely worth the wait and saving up. Good luck!!!!!

Hamad AI Bassam BTC’s are so nice. Just try to handle your bird daily. I was able to handle my Senegal like that by bribing him with sunflower seeds, haha. Now I never need to bribe him. He just associates my interaction with him as a reward. Good luck!!!

Sami Cheaib as long as the parrot is hand tame in my experience with love and positive reinforcement the parrot will get comfortable with you. You need to earn their trust. Haha.

Soooo in Australia Senegal’s cost over $2000 because they’re so rare here.... conures (green cheek) cost us like $200/$500 (depends if the breeders) because they’re very common here...... sooo I wanna get the best bang for my buck 😂😂
Also I current have a cockatiel, and for anyone who owns one they know that they can be very moody and don’t like to stay in one place for long periods of time.... (his name is Pika and I love him but he’s a pain in the ass) I’m looking for my next bird to be less moody and more docile, I want a bird I can just kinda cuddle you know and sit with you

Wow!! That’s really expensive. My Senegal is very chill, loves to sit in one place and enjoys a good head and neck scratch. My Sun and my Caiques on the other hand are crazy and love to move around all the time. They are more playful though.

babyangel61286 I think all the pellets are pretty good. I use Zupreem for my Sun and Hagen Tropican for my Caique and Senegal. They have there favorites. I would buy small amounts first of a few to see what they like.
Most parrot pellets are fine. Seeds are good in moderation but not as a main staple, they like fruit also

Sami Cheaib you should also look into Caiques. They’re very fun birds. Senegal’s and other poi’s I feel are calmer. Caiques are like having puppies in a parrot form. Check them out!!

I have a Senegal, and they don't just repeat words, they learn what the words mean. My girl asks for food, asks for cookie, and says bye bye when I leave.
The long green vest is usually a female, shorter green usually a male. I think you have a female like mine.

The breeder for my Senegal was in Markham ON. Unfortunately I don’t have any contact with them anymore. My Caiques are from a breeder in Scarborough ON. I’m not sure he’s still selling but I can check and follow up!

Get a Senegal, mustache parakeet. Or a maximillian pionus..I have these three species and they are pretty quiet ..they would only make noise if they want attention or don’t want to be alone...my Senegal and pionus love cuddles and more attention than the mustache they like to be with you but cuddles not so much ..
I remember 17years ago when we got our Senegal and she had the solid dark eyes. The seller said he was a male, wrong, after DNA he was a SHE. And she can really scream LOUD! Our Senegal is on seed mix and wants nothing to do with pellets. Ours is always lose, other then if we are gone, and she love to travel and ride in the car. Also she can really bite if you do something that upsets her!

And mine is potty trained. It was really easy to do. He’ll now fly back to his cage to do his business, then fly back to my shoulder for more scratches.

Wait until his Senegal parrot grows older and starts becoming aggressive and chooses his “human gender” that he loves and he will atttack the other human gender. I have a Senegal parrot who is 26 yrs old and he loves men. I’ve had him since he was a few months old. even thou I’m his “Female Master” he will attack if my husband is present. Lol
Wish i was able to have my 7mnth senegal out with my tiel, he would kill her. Also kiwi (senegal) has started to attack my 13yr old, don't know how to stop that. He is very tame, was hand fed and hand tamed. So i dont understand why he's attacking my child x

mm nn thanks for your comment. Coco is more than a year old now and has his full colors. I can confidently say he’s a Sun Conure. Having said that, I can see why you think he looks like a Jenday in the video. He was a baby when I recorded. Young Suns can sometimes look like Jendays.
