    2:04 That was Bachmann's North American HQ, where all the bad decisions to re-release their model steam locomotives with crappy molded-on detail and cheap sound decoders to compete with their previous model steam locomotives that had separately-applied detail parts and DCC readiness took place. Fucking idiots, those Bachmann people.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 5 років тому +22

      Matthew Herrington The solution in Europe is to use taxes in addition to fare revenue, to fund the transit system. Once it gets to a good condition, people start riding it more and don’t mind the taxes as the system saves them money of car expenses. Tue trick is to get Americans to think bigger and longer term, which is sad to say, very difficult.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 5 років тому +21

      Matthew Herrington I honestly don’t care about your stance when you put it that way. It’s honestly stupid.
      There are MILLIONS of government services that exist that you don’t use directly. MILLIONS. All benefit the society as a whole, instead of each individual. Most are set up so that any individual can use them if so desired or needed. Why should they even have a public transit system if you don’t drive? Why have medicare if you aren’t old? Why have the military when you aren’t at war? Why have a fire department if you aren’t burning your house?
      Can’t you see past your own nose? Don’t bother answering that. You’ve made it quite clear that you cannot. I recommend you move out of the city and live in the woods, as you are clearly not adept to living in a society.

    This reminds me somewhat of the beginning of the decline of the trolley line in Gmunden, Austria.
    They had tracks, old rolling stock and a mayor, who didn't like trains. So they tried to close it down under the pretext of making the city more car friendly. They just poured some asphalt over the tracks and made the trolley line to the shortest line in the world.
    Fortunately, things changed. The operators could change public oppinion about the trolley line by celebrating special events or leasing new and modern rolling stock for a while. A few years back, they expanded the system by merging with a nearby lane and it is now a proper light rail system with a very attractive 15 min interval.

      If there's barely a service left, you may make it even free for all, and people still won't come. Free transfers is a good idea, you can redraw your network eliminating the need for direct lines, but I'm not in favour of 'free' transit. Better correct prices and investments in frequency, reliability, speed and comfort, like you said, and if needed, give those in need special tickets.

Only a few months ago the trolley car diner finally closed, most likely after finally realising the pause on trolley service wasn't temporary. As a side note, for popular routes like 23 it is actually against your best interest to follow the schedule. sometimes the website skookul works. I appreciate whoever is behind that application. Also their new ticket checking system for regional rail seems patently stupid. Also I miss the tokens and the flimsy transpasses. If we / all of us want to improve our infrastructure we have to ask about safety, affordability and convenience. I ask this for our service provider and the customer.

    OMG!!!! Let me tell you about Route 56!!! I was waiting for the 56 that goes to Baker’s Square last week. I was waiting for 20 minutes in the cold. There was an accordion bus that had no name on the front of the bus to identify what bus it was and the 56 bus going to Baker’s Square was right behind it. The accordion pulled all the way into the designated bus area to let a person off. While the accordion bus pulls over the Baker’s Square bus flies from behind and hauls ass away! I was LIVID!! I had already been waiting for this bus at night, in the cold now I would have had to wait another hour for the bus that flew pass me! I asked the bus driver of the accordion bus if he was going to my destination. He said, oh that’s the bus that just went by.” I said yea I know you blocked the bus stop!!! I was so mad that I just walked home! SEPTA HAS NO REGARD FOR THE RIDERS! The prices keep going up because less people are using the services! They are one of the worse transportation services in the COUNTRY!!!! You would think they would do something about it! Apparently NOT! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

      Why would they? Public services don't risk "going out of business." For all his complaints about privatization, he fails to address the fact that when the government runs 60 different essential services, it's impossible to use your vote to direct all of them without losing ground on other issues you care about. The main problem is a lack of incentives, and votes ain't it, especially not in a one-party city.

    1:44 Those appear to be very much separate routes. The 594 (the front bus) goes from Seattle south through Tacoma and a bit up the Olympic peninsula, heading northwest. The 545 (the back white bus) goes northeast out of Seattle (where this picture is) to Redmond, on the other side of lake Washington. The green bus in back is owned by King County Metro, an entirety different organization to the white busses, which are Sound Transit. The King County Metro bus is probably not leaving Seattle.

      D. W. O'Boyle Yeah, the #40 is the worst offender for me, more so than the E Line. Anecdotally, that seems more of a people traffic than a vehicle traffic issue.
      But for stuff that gets on I-5, especially, there’s no reason not to take the HOV and make it bus only, then make HOV a different lane.
      It would actually make transit faster because fewer people would be on the roads if buses were reliable, quick, and got you downtown where you don’t want to have to park anyhow.

    As a traction fan who grew up in Melbourne, Australia, it was great to ride our trams as a teenaged fan in the late 80s. In those pre-internet days, it took a bit of effort to find out about other systems which had survived, and Philly seemed like a comparable system. As time went on, it became really disappointing to hear of these 'temporary' service suspensions, and seeing what has been squandered in Philly is a real shame for the people of the city.

    In 1992, rts 23 and 56 were already being bused. Rt 15 was still a streetcar line and on its last day as such enthusiasts chartered a car fitted in among regular trips. I was on a couple regular trips but saw the chartered car.
    If SEPTA stopped all streetcar service in 1992 it would have had to repay the federal government all the money it got in the early 1980s to rebuild its PCC fleet on lines 15, 23 and 56. So right after regular streetcar service was "suspended" SEPTA began car service on the upper end of Rt 23 between loops at Chestnut Hill and Germantown depot. Riders who rode it to Germantown would see many PCCs stored there, their flanged wheels resting directly on the concrete surface. AM General trolley coaches were also stored there. SEPTA began this trolley segment of rt 23 to avoid repaying the feds for ending use of trolleys rebuilt with federal funds before their expected 15 year lifespan was up.
