It looks so green there, I think it adds a lot of depth to the photos and video which were excellent as always. In the 1970s, there was a big "back to the earth movement". Water wheels and wind generators were restored. Wind, water, and solar powers were encouraged in the US. I ended up building my home as passive solar heating system. It worked pretty good when we had a sunny days at least 1/3 of the time. That was 20 years ago. Now I only get a sunny day once per week and have to burn wood to supplement the solar. Backyard gardens were encouraged too. I enjoyed the milk and tea lesson. One of my friends grandmothers was a WWI war bride from England. We boys(the neighborhood gang) would ride our bikes over to visit her once in a while. She gave us tea with milk in it. My grandmother from Sweden would give us coffee with a lot of milk in it. Good memories from 60+ years ago. About 50 years ago, in the Army, I learned to make sun tea. I drink it straight. Liked the `classical` music; very appropriate. Back in the 18th century Cragg Vale was home to a gang of `coiners` who clipped the edges of gold coins and made counterfeit coins. An Excise man who was investigating them was murdered and the leader of the gang was hanged.

If there is one thing so British about this it isn't the Ol' Mills and sweated labour, the cotton mills. It's the lecture given out on how to make a proper brew! Well done on educating him in the correct way!

Done this walk several times, from the very top of Cragg Vale to Hebden Bridge passing all the stuff featured in your video. I am as keen on industrial archaeology as you are and on this walk there is something interesting every few hundred yards or so. I love how you take the effort to show your viewers as much as you can and the commentary is spot on. This has always been my favourite walk, that's why I've done it so many times - there's always something new to discover and the scenery is spectacularly beautiful. I've added this to my favourites because I'm too old at 86 to do the walking bit any more and it takes me back to my younger days. Excellent vid Martin, keep up the good work.

Hi Martin that water mill reminds me of the water mill we have in my village, the name is quenington we have a corn mill and a paper mill which used rags to make paper and is still called rag hill mill and date's from the 12th century.
I grew up just a few hundred metres from those mills in Cragg Vale and I had school friends that lived in the houses near that postbox. Pronunciation of Mytholmroyd was spot on.
As a Cragger or someone who was born in Cragg Vale there was 6 mills in the valley. As you came up from the mill the building with the blue windows used to be a sewing shop where all us kids after school would go in and tell our mums we were back from school then play until they finished work. The tunnel with the river through it I have been through as a child 'Don't tell my mum'. My brother used to play in the second mill in Cragg you showed, I believe it had a stair case down to the top of the weir and a sandy beach to play on. It also had the round pits, we were always told not to go near them as they were contaminated with chemicals. Above the paper mill is another mill very close by with a large mill pond and two single stone arches across the river.
Such a beautiful place now not back in the day though all noisy a dirty dangerous place to be, I couldn't of gone anywhere near that deep murky water Martin by the wheel so good on you for that. Nice to see the tea lady back!😁🫖

I live in Fall River, MA, a small city about 50 miles south of Boston, which was famous in the late 19th. / early 20th. century for textile production in the USA.; as the city's name implies, a river called the Quequechan used to decend in a series of waterfalls to the larger Taunton river, which empties directly into the Atlantc Ocean. Much of the city's original textile production came from waterpower, resulting in the falls of thw Quequechan being virtually buried under a series of textile mills. Most of the mills that spanned the Quequechan are long gone to history, either demolished or lost to fires. Only one of the old mill huildings that spanned the Quequechan still remains, with the river running beneath it to a small dam that it flows over to reach the Taunton river. On the uptream side of this mill there is still an open sluiceway that the Quequechan races through for a short distance; many years ago, a steel cyndrilical waterwheel similar to the ones you show here was still visible, not sure if it's till there. Quite a few ancient mill dams still remain here in Southeastern Massachusetts & nearby Rhode Island; in recent years, I know of at least 3 that were deliberately demolished, as having become structurally unsound & threatening to collapse during heavy rainfalls. As I mentioned earlier, most of the Quequechan was originally covered over by mills. When I was a small child (I'm now approaching 70! 😊) , at least one waterfall was still visible towards the middle of the city. During the Interstate Highway construction boom of the early 1960's, Interstate I-195 was cut DIRECTLY through the middle of Fall RIver, causing the re-routing of the Quequechan river through a large concrete pipe, eliminating that waterfall. Over maybe the last 10 ~ 20 years, there has been some talk among local governement about un-burying the Quequechan & restoring at least some of the falls as a scenic attraction, but i'm not holding my breath for it to happen. Love yoiur videos! I'm both a bit of an amateur rail historian myself & have gotten increasingly interested in industrial archaeology.. Tom Lapointe

Great video Martin & guys not all mill owners were as bad as the one in your video. Visited New Lanark mill in Scotland . The owner Robert Owen believed in education for the children of the families. I believe kids aged over 10 could work but restricted hours. Social housing and a coop for the workers/families. In 1800 this was unheard of he created many enemies among the mill owners. I believe he was behind the changes that were made by Parliament for better working conditions
Cracking video martin and co , kayak camped on the rochdale canal very beautiful little towns but very thought provoking on the child labour conditions of the past , something i know well in my part of south yorks where only a short distance away is the husker pit and its memorial to 26 children aged from 7 to 17 died when a mine flooded , we take for granted now that children go to school but it was hard fought for and we should not forget that .

Perfection with the tea making, Martin. Some people eh?! Others think it's a good idea to put the milk in first, how do you know how strong it is then?! Wonderful explore, great to have some local knowledge from the landowner. Old mills and rivers are always a great explore the old black and white pictures tells it all they are always good to look back on but when you think about the working conditions it's hard to imagine what awful working conditions that these people had to work in. I could watch and watch these videos. Brilliant lads fairplay. We've lost so many skills and so many fine old buildings and the story of them .its fascinating trying to find out about local history and your channel is fantastic. Ill be watching more and ive subscribed.

What a fantastic location with the water wheel great find. Old mills and rivers are always a great explore the old black and white pictures tells it all they are always good to look back on but when you think about the working conditions it's hard to imagine what awful working conditions that these people had to work in. Your right Martin who puts milk on a tea bag the youth of today lol. 👍
