Dead Letters is the first track taken from new album Dead End Kings, go to the album site to sign up to the mailing list and download the track for FREE: www.deadendkings.com. A continuation of 2009's inspired & acclaimed Night is the New Day, Dead End Kings sees Katatonia conjure yet another milestone in audial melancholy & angst.
The Katatonia of 2012 is more potent, focused and creatively impactful than ever before. Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström - alongside guitarist Per Eriksson, bassist Niklas Sandin and drummer Daniel Liljekvist -- are at the peak of their powers right now, and their brand new studio album Dead End Kings provides incontrovertible evidence of their unstoppable artistic momentum. A rich, adventurous and endlessly evocative masterwork that exhibits all the Swedish quintet's established traits while absorbing countless fresh ideas into that monumental sonic brew, this is plainly the strongest and most beguiling album in the Katatonia catalogue to date. It also proves that sadness comes in many shades and that no one is safe from its cold allure.
"Dead End Kings represents progression and taking things to the next level," says Renkse. "The writing was a little more intense and spontaneous for this one. I think that's the biggest difference. But it was made with the same mindset as the last few albums. It just had a little more fire involved. We don't want to repeat ourselves. We are still hungry for new music."
Dead End Kings was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios & The City Of Glass. The album was produced by Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse, & mixed by David Castillo. Additionally, Katatonia is joined once again by Frank Default on sampling & atmospherics, plus a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legends The Gathering/ex-Octavia Sperati.
Artwork is supplied by long-time visual collaborator Travis Smith.

Had a strange incident today. I was monitoring the low-band frequencies - the stuff normally used by outdated equipment, when I came across a very strange repeating message. It was in English, but it was very difficult to make out due to all the static. It stopped broadcasting after about an hour, but I made out a few phrases: "internal void" "dreams are getting darker" and "blood runs so still." The only other thing I picked up was what I assume to be a call sign: "D-E-K." I'm going to send these phrases over to translation in Washington as soon as possible.

    Vexation
    Internal void
My dreams are getting darker and darker
    Dim my lights
    Time is frail
    You shut my mind
    But oh well
    Trapped and choked
    Erased my trail
    Split the chest
My heart couldn't feel more pale
Only once could I see clear
    Vexation
    Internal void
My dreams are getting darker and darker
    This life before me
    Its blood runs so still
    The call of the bird
The song that makes the hours go
    The change inactive
    Dead letters
    Form these words
    Dim my lights
    One by one
    The sordid pale
    Broken run
    Confined in escape
    On burnt grass
    Below the crest
Liar in wait for the ending
Only once could I see clear
My dreams are getting darker and darker
    This life before me
    Its blood runs so still
    The call of the bird
Songs that make the hours go

HP Lovecraft, what a similar style of art/visual style. Mixed, obviously, with a post-apocalyptic and nightmarish theme of bodily distortion.
Edit: A focus on the birds, I'm assuming crows, was missed in my first viewing. They add to the chilling visuals and add a link to almost all the art used for the album.

To those who say that this is a rip off of Tool. Well they play in a similar genre. In genre music you are allowed to sound abit similar to other bands in that genre and to adopt innovations(for example I don't like Meshuggah but I like bands that are influenced by them like Plini) "ripoff"? Come on! this is way more synthy, more melodic and harmonic. Their use of texture is very different. Tool is very economical in their use of texture While Katatonia uses alot of effects. Just because they use those oddly timed riffs and mellow vocals they are a Tool clone? Really! Do you guys even listen to metal apart from Tool? Katatonia is actually a pretty old band too btw.

    • @ForeverAbandoned1

@@darthreaper6311 Well, I don't know if they're really that bad with vocals and lyrics, I mean, I kinda like the vocals, it's a good voice, it's pretty powerful speaking about emotion, it has a strong impact, at leat to me. And speaking about his voice it's veeeeery technical, especially about breath control. About lyrics, the only problem it's just that they're all sooooo oniric. But they're not bad lyrics, at least, that's my opinion.

Today I woke up from a dream where our times were turning into a dark age. Famine, violence, rape. I watched my children suffer all of it. Their innocence gone. Tried to communicate it to everyone, but no one seemed to understand. I remember feeling indifferent at the end, no point in anything, waiting for death. Woke up. Thought about it, remembered this song.
