I will be doing a follow up in 6 months / 1 year on how the totes are holding up since I know a lot of folks wonder if they will give out over time. I’m pretty sure they will be fine … but time will tell 😂🤘
I bet you would make a pretty penny with selling some of the items you are getting rid of... I know I would have bought an Uncle Jessy item that appeared in a video.
Instead of tape, you can create a digital QR code list. Where when you scan the QR sticker (best made with a label maker), it then populates what's in the container on your phone.
Hey UncleJessy I’m a huge fan I’m watching a video about you melting failed 3d printer filaments but I’ve been wondering how did you Download your files and gcode on you elegoo 3d printer I have the new one so can you make a video about it?
We use white 'Chalky' pens to write on the black bins directly. It stands out like a whiteout pen but can be wiped off with a damp rag if you need to relabel.
I've done this project before and love the final shelf. I ended up making a miniature size version to hold basic laundry baskets to keep in our laundry room. Now everyone in our family has their own basket they can quickly access.
Couple of pointers: 1) Those plastic corner braces are fine for alignment, but they're not very structural. For that, you'd want metal braces. 2) Those shims you're using to level the shelf should be under the columns to transfer the weight above down into the floor. Having them offset creates stress on the bottom pieces that is going to cause the bottom lumber to bow and essentially creates a fulcrum from which the shelves can topple. 3) Mount to the wall AFTER it is constructed and level, and ideally you'd want the place where it mounts to be able to move up and down a fair amount to account for the changes in weight. The point of mounting to the wall is to prevent it from toppling forward or backward. If you mount to the wall before everything is build and then throw on a bunch of weight, you're actually adding stress to the studs in your wall and you've essentially created a shelf where only part of the weight is being distributed into the floor.
Nice, looks like you have a decent amount of space above it as well. A few pieces of loose plywood and you can store things high as well. Maybe loose items or a few short totes like the wrapping paper ones turned sideways.
Yup! I wanted to make sure I could get into the drop ceiling if i needed to as well. Will need to run some stuff up there in the future for another project
This reminds me... I need to do organize my place too... Also, I'm glad to see you have the T1 too. I felt a bit like an outsider when my co-workers saw it, but I use it a LOT. Thanks for the fun ideas.
I use these bins to store customer lights for my Christmas Lighting business. For labeling I suggest to switch to white gaffer tape. Sharpie just stands out more on it. Keep at it!
Oooo, this is a great idea. We have a storage shed in the back yard that this would be perfect in. We do have some plywood as well since I know some bins would have waaaay too much weight to be held by the edges for our needs. Saving this for later
Very nice, and bonus, you designed it in a way that's friendly to those who don't have the means to haul 10 or 12 ft dimensional lumber. I also love that you build from the studs outward with cleats. I'm starting to get some ideas brewing in my skull to revamp my bedroom/office, except I would probably find some excuse to use through bolts, glue joints, etc.
Totally got the stud mounted idea from Repkord who helped me hang some cabinets last year. Works so well without having to make sure you are in studs for everything. And yeah... there was no way I was going to be able to easily get those 12ft boards home
You too?! I used mine to lay out my whole room... which aside from a full size bed, has many uses. My friends said I don't sleep in a room, but a mini factory >.
@GeneDascher Do you have an idea you would like to try? That's excuse enough for me... one little idea has turned into a 10 printer mini farm with 3 lasers and 2 plotters (think cricut)
@@DonsArtnGames I have lots of ideas, just no way to market them. I have a couple of products I've come up with, but don't have the capital rn to make them come to fruition , IF they are even viable products that OTHER people would buy.
Also, this will be the last video I attempt to use these rode wireless mics 🤮👎 decent for phone recording but sounds horrible off my Sony ZV-E1 even after adjusting settings
Now take pictures of what is in each bin, assign them to a QR code, and put that QR code on the front of the bin. Scan the code to get a picture of what is beign stored in that bin.
I just take pictures of what is inside and print it out. I cross out whatever is consumed or write a note telling me what is used and what is still available.
@unclejesse where are your links for all the 3D Printed items? I don’t have a printer but like the pieces you made. Thanks for making the video! I was looking for garage storage ideas and this video helped.
Nice video and project, Uncle Jessy ❤ Hey, it’s a pity you picked black opaque boxes. I would highly recommend transparent boxes - you can actually see what’s inside. It doesn’t look so beautiful, but it is way faster to find things that you forgot where you placed.
Hey uncle Jessy I've been watching for quite awhile and I'm printing out a full sized magneto helmet right now and its my first time printing a helmet and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on some other helmets/projects I could do, Thank you.
Great! Thank! Now I have to do this cause the wife saw me watching the video🤦 lol. I need to get stuff cleaned up in my shop for my channel too lol 😂 And I need that tape measure setup!
I think you should paint all the lumber in white, with the black caps/totes and yellow lids, it will look awesome, good job.🤙🏼🇦🇺 Joe from Australia 🤙🏼🇦🇺
I feel like this solution takes up more space than it saves as a storage system tbh. The massive wooden frame seems rather excessive since the totes are literally designed to be stacked in this exact way without needing any of this. This would only make sense if you were needing to be in and out of that many boxes all the time. Well executed project as always though. I'd bet those frames would hold up a lot more weight than the plastic totes could ever dream.
There's a tradeoff in all designs. Better accessibility or less space used. I prefer accessibility myself. No point in stacking pots of storage if you have to shuffle every time you need to get to something. In not really sure where the "excessive space" is... The totes are stacked just enough to clear each other. Most dressers with drawers have an even worse ratio of negative space.
Didn't by chance do one with them sideways did ya? I'll take a look at tinker cad and see if I can figure out how to rotate and fit them into my space.
Im getting ready to build a tote rack today. I like your idea pretty well. Looks great. Ending all sentences and statements in the tone of a question drove me nuts but i am from the south sooooo, lol😂 J/k But seriously, Great video Boss Man.
Nice. Built something similar in my garage about 6 years ago. No 3d printed parts and put shelves in, instead of rails due to the weight of what I was storing (actually small pieces of lumber, by dimension size and type, reg and pressure treated). I put a hole in my thumbnail with my drill (slipped off the screw) though, so at least you didn't do that.. LOL. Looks great.
you really need a diagonal support there. the small corner pieces will do nothing, if the shelf top experiences a strong push towards teh side. the whole things will just collapse on itself. Unless of course you bolt it to the wall behind it, which you should do anyway, so it does not topple forward either...
No hate, I started with tinkercad as well. But I find it quite amusing that you are using such high-end tech for measuring and digitally building and yet you're not using a fully featured CAD software like fusion 360.
F360 is good, but you don't use a semi truck and trailer to do grocery shopping. If parametric is all you need, then no need to do sketching and extruding... I use TC for "simple" designs myself and Plasticity for more "advanced" needs.
🤣 yeah I just knew I could throw something down really quickly in tinkercad + its free for me to share the files so others can easily edit without installing anything
You could also do a smart system so you know exactly what’s in there they have QR code ones and then there was a few guys on TikTok that were doing something through the iPhone with pictures so you can see what was in there
Just wanted to comment that if your storage is going in an area with a sprinkler system, there is a minimum clearance needed at the top of the space due to fire code. Check with your local authorities as mine is 18 inches.

You could have printed your container on the OrangerStorm🤪
8.99 a big crate.. Blimey something like that would cost around £40 here in the UK. damn it. I like the idea but the costs here would shoot it down for me! That's without the overpriced wood too here. The VAT on our goods really sucks.
that tool so tech crazy it can project the measurements you did with its accessory? I was expecting it to make a complete accurate 3d model of the entire room once you measure 1 edge. This is just BS.
now that would be cool You can do something like that with PolyCam app and the lidar function on your iPhone. This was just an excuse to bust out the vision pro for a little fun ;)

oh dang! that is a fantastic idea! Thanks
finally a woodworking project that shows lumber I can actually get from our junk lumber yards .. man I miss 2x4s that were decent
Lowes is one of the worst places to get dimensional lumber from.
Try being in Australia, all lumber is warped junk here and costs three times as much.

great project and awesome to see the T1 Tomahawk in action running with the Apple Vision Pro!

How much do you estimate each of those black 3-D printed caps cost if I print my own or how much grams of PLA do I need for each?

These box cost 80 euro a piece in belgium .OMG what a rip off 9 dollar in USA and 80 euro in Belgium or Germany
Ya but you have Ikea and can get a similar box I assume from some local retailer for much less than the exact one shown in this video.
@LiquidRetro no every box this size is expensive or crappie when cheap and ikea has not a lot of choice for big storage box's
Indeed, the IKEA bins are very flimsily in comparison.
If it makes you feel better these yellow bins are $20 for me locally
