I was fortunate enough to see John Gary up close and personal at the San Francisco club, the Purple Onion in 1964. My husband and I bought all his albums. He died way too young.
Saw him at a live concert and bought all his recordings in the 1960s. One of the best balladeers of all time. His great voice and songs will live forever. RIP Al
Saw John in concert in 1968 in San Antonio where he wowed the crowd with his Spanish. He was the primo tenor of the 20th century . I chanced to visit with him in 1975 in Dayton and found him to be an awesome individual. He was adept at many things besides singing, he was an accomplished archer, a scuba expert, a bowler played guitar and probably more things than I know of. He was adored by the ladies for his voice and looks and revered by men for his voice and physical ability. I'll never forget him and his beautiful music.
My father played his albums when I was a young teenager and I love his music still, I think partly because I associate it with my father but mostly because he has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. I also had the privilege of seeing him in person before he died.
Saw him in person at a club, close up, intimate setting. His voice…so beautiful, so warm, his range fantastic, his breath control amazing. Also a genuine, nice person. I have all his CDs, everyone who hears them asks me, who is that? What a beautiful voice!
I loved a Irish Outlaw "Boy" His Dad "Pops " was one of those really tough Irish "Boys"He go to a bar and keep playing this beautiful song over and over dedicating it to Danny Boy his son .He'd tell anyone "Don't touch the jukebox or I'll knock you out " He wasn't very big in size but he was mighty .This beautiful song touches my heart so .❤
I have been a true fan of John for many decades. Each time I come across a" new" audio or video link I am compelled to listen . Truly an artist - a vocal artist with no peer.
I grew up listening to John Gary. My mother loved him and played his music all the time. How blessed I am to have been acquainted with one of the greatest voices of all time. My parents saw him live in Houston in the 60s. His version of Unchained Melody remains the standard to measure every other one by.
THE ONE & ONLY JOHN GARY was simply a great guy---a child singing star---a US MARINE---a star of Records/TV/Radio--He took his final bow more than 20 years ago---but he is still remembered. He would have liked that!
Carm Styf : I’m 74 and was a fan since 1963. For a UA-cam sampling, please UA-cam “ John Gary once upon a time” and “ the sound of music” ( he was the first to sing and record this song before Julie Andrews and all the other vocalists that sang it after him. But his rendition remains my favorite. Let me know what you think. Love is all, Al
I just discovered John Gary through a recording someone gave me. Besides his wonderful voice and range, his singing is so expressive, genuine, and from the heart without being sentimentalized. Being a musician, I have heard many singers, especially in the classical genre. I find John Gary to be a real gift.
He was a favourite of my mother's. I remember hearing his "That's the Way it Was" album playing on our stereo in the 1970s. With my mother in an Alzheimer's care home at age 93, I've found his music coming back into my consciousness. It's like opening an old box stored in the attic. Now I've become a fan, too.
My Mom loved John Gary-grew up listening to him. At 91 she is also in a memory care unit and listening to this takes me back to healthier and happy times.
New research is showing memory issues can be helped by listening and perhaps singing along a bit to favorite music from the person's younger days...sorry to hear your mum died. ...Blessed 🐝 to all suffering and in pain and to Mother Earth...
When younger (in the 60's-70's) I had a tenor voice in the same range as John's. I studied all the songs he sang that I could hear. It was great fun trying (and failing) to feel I was in his ballpark. Since then hearing many great tenors, because technology has made their voices available to us, I feel John is the best for his type of voice/music as is the great Pavarotti is to his. Both, simply the best ever...
How joyous to see a new video of one of the greatest singers of all time. Thank you, and would love to be able to see the entire CBC special. R.I.P. Mr. Gary.
I have heard many great vocalists do this number, but John Gary did it in a way that moves me the most. I particularly like the version he did on his "So Tenderly" album which is the one to which I refer. All of his special abilities and gifts were on display including his legendary use of grace notes and other embellishments, an incomparable falsetto and his rich baritone mid-range was exquisitely utilized on the lowest notes of the song for example, during the first phrase. When he sings "and all my grave will warmer, sweeter be", he produces a tone on the word "grave" that is simply spectacular (it is less apparent in the version here) and which has a gut-wrenching sadness and ominous quality I have not heard from anyone else who did this song. It fits perfectly with what the text conveys at that point. He sings softly when it is appropriate but manages to sing gradually, more loudly (crescendo) as the melodic line rises, which serves to imbue the phrases with growing emotion. I have heard some vocalists sing the entire song in piano/pianissimo or worse yet, in forte without any change in dynamics, neither of which is effective. In the version from the "So Tenderly" album he modulates up 1/2 step which adds a great deal to the effect being created. This allows him to reach an F# on the word "bend" which he does in gorgeous falsetto, where during the first verse he does the comparable note (F) in head voice rather than falsetto. So much more can be said but John Gary was an incredible artist. His creativity through use of his voice was simply incomparable.

One is if not the most underrated singers of all time. Thank you for the music.
Not a single missed note, not a moments failure, not a single misplaced breath, .......... no autotune.
So beautiful..! His lovely voice..and this wonderful song..! I love this..! What a voice..!
Elvis...said he was his favorite singer.. Told John he had all his albums..and then, began naming them.!
Saw John Gary perform in Chicago’s Empire Room of The Palmer House in 1964. Post HS Prom; I acquired several of his albums. His voice wears well.
Absolutely one of the finest versions of that wonderful song.
John Gary was one of the finest of all time!

I've just found John Gary. A masterful version of my mum's favourite song. RIP to both of you.
His voice is pure and true, with a warmth that’s unsurpassed, no auto tune for this man.

He sounds so good with just a guitar and background strings.

My dad's favorite, an "honorary" Irishman who loved John Gary & Irish tenors. Much missed. Happy St. Patrick's Day.
My 28 year old son loved this when he was a wee one and would end it "love you so much!" We are all Irish this time of year.

John Gary possessed an extraordinary voice. As a long time member of his fan club, what a joy it was to become friends with John and Lee.
The audience is so mesmerized by every word he sings. GREAT

Smoke gets in your eyes but you can still listen to John Gary!
One of the best to ever sing a song.

This is the best version of this song....John what a fantastic vocal range you had..R.I.P.

Unappreciated superstar from the past.

Great addition to the John Gary lineup.
His voice makes my heart leap and my spirit cry!
John gary was a favorite of my father, and recently became a favorite of mine . Al Fogal you are right about your comment.

Thanks, assume you don't have the entire special? Will hope for more gems like this.
Late 60's early 70's "fashion" sucks ass. Regardless, this man has the voice of an angel.

Good night sweet prince ❤
What an underated performer...Beautuful version
He also held record for diving and was a world class archer.
This certainly makes us flawed humans look good and answers the question of why the Lord of the Universe might love us.
I had a dream last night about him and awakened cying.
Wow
Since he sings Irish songs so well, can someone tell me if John Gary has Irish (grand)parents? There must be a link. Thanks.
I'm sure hes Irish. He has the irish coloring to be sure
War is a misunderstanding unitially, and the fight or die, or surrender the ling fought for freedoms.
He wasnt pop , but he was important.
didn't know he could play guitar too
It was just ok I really prefer a summer afternoon and Hawaiian wedding song etc etc thanks anyway.
Just o.k.? You are a brain-dead, tone-deaf clown. 🤡
Was he already sick here?
Not sure anyone had a prettier voice.
I didn't know he knew how to play the guitar. Can't deal with the facial hair, though.
