This is an awesome video. I had umbilical hernia surgery. My doctor recommended the pain management protocol in your video and it worked. The key was staying on a schedule with the Advil/Tylenol and going for short walks.

Thankfully the 2016 guild-lines are being changed back, so that the suffering stops with so many Pts, including Post op, palliative and even pain management pts. Its sad that Drs must Be “Afraid” of rxing meds that actually work - yet have no problems substituting Narcs for Other OFF Label drugs that where never approved to treat pain levels in the 1st place because many are afraid of getting a knock from the DEA on the door - which they shouldn’t anyways. ODs we see are from the illicit use of Fentanyl not 30 10mg percocets

I agree with you Josh because I've had 2 inguinal hernias in the past and absolutely needed a narcotic. I tried without using it and I was miserable. Now I'm scheduled for an abdominal hernia repair coming up soon and some people probably don't need stronger pain meds but I'll tell you. We are not all the same. Some have stronger pain tolerance than others. But I think doing it without narcotics is ridiculous

I had open inguinal hernia repair with mesh almost four months ago. As Codeine can cause constipation I tried to put up with just taking ibuprofen and paracetamol, somehow I managed and I'm glad I did. Almost four months on and I very rarely get a mild twinge but that's it. I feel like I've been lucky, but wonder at what point chronic pain can start or whether I am almost past the risk of developing it now...

I had bilateral inguinal hernia surgery with mesh almost 9 months ago now and felt great after about 4 weeks. This past month in feeling twinges that weren't there before and feel discomfort after light exercise. Some days I even feel like the hernia is still there. Is this something I should be worried about?

Stephen, We often see patients who have a simple groin strain or pull which they might confuse with an issue from their surgical care. We often recommend some rest, icing, and anti-inflammatories. More than 90% of patients find that their issues resolve after. Best, CAHS

Hey I recently had hernia repair surgery in which the surgeon removed the mesh it was a laparoscopic surgery he made 3 incisions
Although the incision pain is minimal
For some reason my entire right side of my stomach to my spine and about half way up my spine is hurting extremely bad
I went to the er and they said I had a bit of a hematoma they were going to stick a drainage tube in me to drain out the bad blood and fluids. But they did not as they said the amount in my stomach wasn’t too much. Could that be the cause of my severe side and back pain? (Left side doesn’t hurt at all) but my right side does.. a little help please anything will do

Charan, It's difficult to provide an exact cause for your slight sharp pains. Pain around the incision is often just scar tissue that is pulling or tugging. Sometimes massaging the incision and stretching the area can help. Best, CAHS

After a breast cancer lumpectomy years ago, I needed no opiates and hardly any other pain control. But I am 3 weeks out today from a cardio-thoracic low-invasive heart procedure and the pain is still horrible. I was provided with no protocol except be sure to clean and dress the sutures. Sent home with a prescription for tylenol plus codeine instead of the Norco I originally had and the codeine did nothing except make me drowsy. This has been a nightmare. So instead of letting the doctors do all the research, how about a more thorough canvass of the patients to find out how it really is.

Sally it's a double edge sword, we all know the bad side effects of these bad meds, so it all comes down to personal choice, I'm typing this and I am in my 5th day post open hernia repair surgery, and I'm hating life and regretting having this surgery, I am a pain tolerant person, I was prescribed oxycodone and ibuprofen , to take every 6 hours and every 4 hours respectively, are you kidding me you think I'm gonna pound my liver with all that? hell no, I took one oxy the first day honestly because I was curious what it would feel like and wanted to see why people get addicted to it, it did nothing for me except constipating me, I have since then taken a Ibu maybe twice like once on the second day and one yesterday I think , I just chose to take the pain over long lasting effects, but for some people they have no choice, I guess my point is you can't blame the doctors for this part, the patients should be educated and do research and make the right choices.

Not any solutions here. I had a radical nephrectomy. The pain was terrible and seemed to be nerve pain. That pain was never really successfully controlled. I took a lot of narcotic pain medicine, being fully aware of the dangers. I stopped taking them after 2 weeks, when the pain was only when I moved. NEVER TAKE NARCOTICS IF YOU NEED THEM TO MOVE. JUST REST BETWEEN MOVEMENTS INSTEAD. The rest is your narcotic.

You need narcotics , Atleast a prescribed anti inflammatory , I just had hernia surgery they sent me home with nothing . I couldn’t walk or move all week without excruciating pain so I went to walk in doctor and prescribed medications no issues. Just because their is a opioid pandemic from walking drug abusers , it has zero correlation with post surgery , it’s sad and horrible practice surgeons are trying to relieve pain with Tylenol and Advil, disappointing.
