      I don't think Chad was wrong, everyone has their own taste of design and how something looks, I also thought the tire was sitting a little to high but it's not my build, it's Chads and he can do whatever he likes. I did think it was cool that he took an opinion from some of people and changed it, this shows he is a man that cares and lets us share an opinion and have the sense of involvement in the build, super cool of Chad to do that, much respect.

    Chad nailed the factory look of the side mounts. Just google 1936 Hudson, and click images . That being said, I agree that it might not look so overbearing if they were about 3” lower. What a pleasure to watch this man’s mind work, and apply it to metal.

      Being the suspension has been lowered ,, if the sidemount went down more it would interfere with the front wheel travel

    • @omarjette3859
      @omarjette3859 28 днів тому

      Yes, 3" lower should line up with the "pinstripes" (aka beltline) at 00:40 which run the length of the car. Looking at photos of the many cars made this way back in the day. Agree also that there is the functionality (wheel travel) problem. What if the "pockets" were flattened inside and the tires were stored flat. Then if the spare needed to be used, carry a liitle electric compressor or a can of "fix-a-flat". Always think outside the box..

    One of the reasons I love watching Chad create art with these old cars that people just let rot away, he reminds me of my favorite movie, The Christmas story and Ralphies dad and his tires that are just like the old baldass tires Chad is using. Bringing me so much joy. Thank you Chad for building awesome cars and showing me how to weld and Jolene I need to thank you even more because without you, we would not be learning from a true artist.

    Your side mounts look much better now! You could get some more of those trailer fenders you used for your buckets, and make some covers for the exposed part of the side mounts. That is what side mounts would have had in the '30s. They are hinged at the front, and with a latch down at the back. They look good, protect the tires from UV damage and keep them securely in place. They also make a good place to mount side-view mirrors! Painted body color and with a strip of Bad Chad chrome trim around the center, they would look really nice. You're going to have the world's best-looking 1936 Terraplane!

    The camera shot from in front of the grille looking back makes this car look so bad ass with the lower profile windshield after the top chop. I love that grille and the red hood ornament. The bumper/fog lights stick out quite a ways - maybe cut the brackets and pull them in a little to tighten up the look? Did chrome trim rings for the headlights come with the car? You guys are my absolute favorite channel of all the car shows!

    I was one who thought the side mount was too high. I'm glad you received a photo for comparison. Now, what you have done is perfect. It blends much better and does not over power the peak of the hood and, like you mentioned, it now lengthens the appearance of the fender. It's just enough lower. Good on you for listening to your followers. I still don't like the skirts, but I'll get over it. Keep on keep'n on.

    I saw those comments coming through, and wondered if it would cause a stir, with so much commentary from "The Peanut Gallery". The fact that you re-visited the decision is 100% consistent with my Hot Rod/Customizing credo "Work it 'til you like it". I've re-done plenty of metalwork; that's the thing I like about working in metal (as opposed to wood) is you can re-work it as much as you need to without it showing in the end. Nice job, Chad! Mad respect.

    One tip from me- get a Dressmaker's / Tailor's tape for measuring around profiles- your masking tape trick works well for distance but after 2 - 3 rolls of tape it gets exy$$$$ a dress makers tape cost about CAD$1.00 and you will then also have measurement as well.

    Great job Chad. Must tell you that back in the early 60s I had Straight eight Hudson limo here in England that had dual sidemounts. It also had colour matching steel covers over the tyre with a chrome strip down the centres. Can’t remember the year of the car but it looks a bit like the one you are working on. It also had an electric gear shift on the steering column as well as a manual floor shift. Car must have been late thirties.

Not gonna lie, I did have some moments where I questioned if a thing here and there was the right thing to do- but what is "right" when it come to a thing of preference, as you say?
    Here for the vision, as I trust it now.
    The question now is: What to do next? Well, how about a pop-up sunroof and turning it into a sports coupe with no pillar? 🖖

    Wasn't sure about the side mounts at first. Might hide the clean, aerodynamic, chopped design. But then I remembered the mad deco thing anyone seeing it in the rear view mirror will see. Extra WTF confusion wins. Now I'm convinced they are cool, but thinking the spares need the same spin formed caps as the front wheels. Now that the rears dont need them and it's a shame to hide half of them. Just in case anyone sees it from the side. It'll look like a viking ship. Epic. Hope they fit the fender buckets without any more chopping just to test out the look. I'd love to see that.

    Also... a tip I learned from an upholsterer- A piece of thin transparent painter's plastic dropcloth works great for making a template of a complex shape like the fender top. the plastic is pliable enough to conform to the shape of the fender, body, whatever, and can just be flipped-over for the other side. I recently used it when making new sail panels for the '49 Chevy coupe I chopped.

    Jim Patterson had mentioned heavier braces on side mounts for a vehicle he has. It may be a good consideration for the Huson since the bouncing of the added weight on the fenders when the car is out on the road encountering bumps could fatigue small amounts until eventually small cracks form and spread. It could even happen in areas underneath where on the original braces or where those attachments are. Better to avoid a possible sudden, catastrophic failure while out cruising.

    On the bottom rear of the passenger front fender, there are some scratches that look like three character lines that follow the angle of the wheel arch. That is the top line is a little more forward than the second, and the second a little more forward than the bottom line. I thought they were character lines, but when I realized they were not, I thought some very small half round stock could be welded on to make three character lines. Then I thought if that were done, the same on the lower rear part of the fender skirt would look good, in my mind. Thoughts?

    @roberthaworth8991 Рік тому

    Sidemounts got higher in the mid-'30s as bodies became more streamlined and the amount of physical space available to stow them at a lower altitude diminished. Sidemounts had become a "thing" in 1928, and over the succeeding few years were fitted to up to 50% of some brands of cars. But by 1938 the craze was well over, and installations had declined to only 4%; some manufacturers refused to offer them at all. The decline was helped by the fact that by '38 virtually all US cars had built-in trunks, so external stowage of a spare wheel(s) seemed less necessary. After '37 some makers offered sidemounts only as options -- typically on their largest and traditionally-styled models, like Packard seniors and Cadillac's formal sedans and limos. By 1941 the sidemount installation rate was down to something like 1%. This was just as well, since in rubber-starved wartime the last thing you wanted to do was display your spare tires within easy reach of the public. Sidemounts disappeared with the advent of full-envelope bodies after WWII, there being literally no space (fender valley) remaining within which to fit a full-sized spare. In the meantime, "high pockets" sidemounts like these -- Hupmobile, Buick, and a few others had them, too -- look ridiculous, and ruin the flowing lines of the car.

If not the same style, how about the roof mounted chrome ball antenna, like the 1941-1953 Buick? Btw, front spare wheels are looking good! For a finished look, I vote for the body-colored hard shell covers with rear view mirrors on top.

    Great job! I would consider centering the circle on the fender skirt trim piece on the center of the rear wheel! But it is your vision, so do as you see fit. Love your style!! JP3 the retired cop in Oregon USA.

    This thing is coming together quite nicely. It is great to see old school have a go attitude. No better way to grow than learning from mistakes.

    Looks soooo much better. Don't forget to make a little drain hole in the bottom of the tire buckets to let rain or wash water empty out!

    It's looking awesome ,and to admit you've made a "mistake"isn't really that difficult when you're building on the fly it's a part of the game, it's just that most people are too proud to admit they weren't doing the most perfect job when it comes to looks and Chad just tells the truth by saying ;You were right, I wasn't.
    Many people can take that as an example I would say, Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing

    You nailed it with the new tire location Chad. Just love how the car looks. As for the emblem on the skirt, please consider mounting the circle of the emblem to align with the center of the rear wheel.

    Chad. The ability to admit you’re wrong… As a man of you’re skill level and once loved boxing…!!!? Wow Chad you have obviously always been a good humble man. Even though we call you Bad Chad. It’s Bad Chad now only cause of the Bad Ass rides you build. Thanks for teaching us all that to take the criticism with pride and understanding. Love you’re work ethic and the fact you put a show on everyday! Thanks once again

    Vast improvement by moving the wheel back and lower. Now you need a drain hole at the bottom of the wheel well.

    Good job Chad. You have a lot of intelligent and caring fans. You listened to their feed back with an open mind and agreed and made the adjustment. I agree with the suggestion and outcome. But I want to give you props for being so gracious. Your example and words mean a lot to a lot us folks.

    Awesome job, love your channel. Was wondering what you will mount the spares to so they do not move? Don’t you need a structural mount? I’m sure you will figure it out.
