- Today we start up a brand new playthrough of Terraria Master Mode. This time around we'll be checking out the melee class as it's seen several buffs and tweaks in Terraria 1.4.4. I decided to run the drunk seed because it doesn't change things up too much and gives us access to both world evils. This lets us check out both the Lights bane and the blood butcherer!
I'm going to aim for 2 episodes a week, but can only guarantee 1 as I'll still be working on some of the bigger projects on the side. It's been a while since we've done a proper Terraria Let's play so I hope you all are as excited as I am :)

Melee is honestly relatively diverse now, there's a lot more weapon types than 'ranger without ammo' or 'mage without mana' and the weapons feel worth getting now, other than just the novelty of them
The true excalibur went from just a terra blade ingredient to an extremely viable crowd control weapon, 1.4.4 made melee so much better

Yea the problem with melee before is that it either was true melee (which sucks) or they just threw a sword beam onto everything

The reason the ghost spawned in @ 5:43 is because of the halloween event. It also causes crows to spawn.

I noticed the buff to broadswords almost immediately, it was so much easier to stay alive in the early game because the knock back and damage even on the basic wooden broadsword makes it much easier to handle groups of zombies on the first couple nights.
I don't know if yo-yo's have been changed but I know that queen bee now has a bee themed yo-yo now.
I swear, true melee king slime fights are like, the only time king slime actually requires skill to fight.

Have ever fought king slime Unprepared with a wooden bow and some flame arrows? Yeah not so fun or easy especially when you go back around there is a bunch of slimes in the way that do 75 damage because you have wood armor 3 shoting you because you couldn't find more heart crystals... and you have zero mobility...
I’d suggest going for the trimarang - a weapon which combines the enchanted boomerang, shroomerang, and ice boomerang - if you can. It’s admittedly a little too grindy for what it actually provides, but it’s still a pretty cool weapon.

King Slime is actually kinda tough for true melee, even on lower difficulties he does a ton of contact damage
The rotted fork with a melee speed setup is pretty neat for it
Spears or Beam Swords on pre hm is a must if you're a beginner

Use sugar glider, the shark is fairly big and can get annoying sometimes. Also, the squirrel is very rare!
Definitely try out the shadowflame knife if you haven't before. It's a great early hardmode weapon and can carry you through plantera even in master mode.
Edit: the shark is not a new item, you should definitely use the squirrel!
He's used it multiple times. Plus, he is looking at weapons with big changes.

I mean, the knife is practically pre-mech meta, considering it is one of the easier melee drops with some range to get, compared to the copyright-free Captain America shield and OOOOOOOOH BANANA
LET'S GO! New Gungnir let's play! As a fan of modded melee, this update was a dream come true.
My advice: GET the Thorn Chakram (that weapon it's great), also the Blade of grass (they both inflict poison, and poison it's better in 1.4.4 since now it deals more damage when a player inflicts it on an enemy) & try getting a new melee weapon they added called Trimarang, to get it you need the Enchanted Boomerang, The Ice Boomerang and The Shroomerang.
Also Sugar Glider > Shark and Ghosts spawn randomly in the Halloween season, it's not a Drunk world thing, also the dungeon it's under a brown tree on this seed, if you can't find it.
I'd really like it if you tried to give some spotlight to the Starlight later on in this playthrough. It's been touched up and it's honestly an amazing weapon to use right now. It really mows through enemies if you're willing to be brave and get close, which I think is the real melee fantasy.
The Bananarang/St United Shield is actually a really good strategy against mech bosses, especially destroyer. I would give it a shot!
I used bannarang for all mechs works really well sometimes it’s even better than light discs because of how they come back
true true, it actually took less time for me a get a bananarang than the shadowflame knife in my playthrough
United shield is actually insane due to the blocking ability, though it’s pretty rare due to it being a merchant only item.
@@Inmortuae2233 did they change the rate on when merchant spawns? Ive only gotten him once on my recent playthrough at 15 hours

I'm really glad he's doing the drunk world seed, it's by far one of my favorite seeds in the game. The music is just so good.

Hey Gung, Zardyn from the streams here! I love that you're trying out the new music, it's awesome! I like the normal Terraria music more because of nostalgia, but I find myself switching every now and then.
The new melee class seems very nicely balanced, and the progression is pretty streamlined! I personally love the Blade of Grass because it was pretty unused before, and I love the Light's Bane change because the range just didn't work at that stage of the game.
Oh yeah, noone really mentions it but queen bee also has a unique roar sound now

I hope you keep sharing your reactions to the new music! The Otherworld music is so good, makes me want to play the drunk seed for every new world. All the giant trees though...
Mushroom Biome is definitely my favorite, reminds me of Donkey Kong Country. Close runner-up is the Hallow Biome.
Donkey Kong Country music is incredible, I'll definitely be looking out for the Mushroom biome theme!
From reading the wiki it sounds like you just need to visit a drunk world once and then you can use the party girl to toggle the music in any world.
You DEFINITELY have to try out a new weapon called the hive-five! At least whenever you get to late prehardmode lol. It's a post-QB yoyo that creates bees whenever you hit an enemy, it's such a cool addition to the update and I absolutely love it.
And it’s pretty good imo, carried me through skeletron.

BOC: Blade of Grass is rlly good.
EOW: Ball of hurt/any mace
Skeletron: Volcano and star-fury
WOF: Nights edge all the way
Mechs: Bananarangs
Planterra : True Excalibur/nights edge
Golem : Terrablade
Post golem: North Pole or Terrablade

We have a 1.4.4 melee playthrough from Gungir, we are truly on top of the world.
Now all we are missing is a playthrough from Duke Fishron and terraria youtube is complete.

I've never been early for a terraria let's play so I'm super excited to see this! I'm actually struggling against the destroyer with melee only (but it's jus cuz I'm bad so don't worry)
It's more diverse but from experience I can say with absolute certainty that 1.4.4 master mode melee on mobile is still 100% pain and suffering. Took 3 irl days to finally beat skeletron. Now I'm finally in hardmode dying to almost everything even with palladium gear. Luckily I got rod of discord before I got the 50 kill banner on chaos elementals. Never got it before.
I like changing to the otherworld soundtrack every so often! It's pretty cool!
Glad you went with the melee run. I'm doing a melee playthrough of Get Fixed Boi right now too and I was kind of getting wrecked until I finally finished my Blade of Grass. That sword is a beast now and I can't wait to turn it into Nights Edge. Also Blood Butcher might be a great weapon for Eater of Worlds since you should be able to get that stacking debuff on every individual segment and do an insane amount of bleed damage to it. I plan on testing that little theory when I get to that point but it is slow going on Get Fixed Boi because of all the traps and death and other just nastiness.
Just a tip, me and my friend are currently doing a melee only playthrough on master mode too and we instantly went for the blade of grass which carried us first try through every boss until Skeletron when we switched to the Volcano, both are extremely strong weapons now.
The blade of grass and volcano are definitely on the list of things to cover, thanks for the suggestions!

Toss a copper shortsword or copper helmet on a slime for a new friend. Also, the BoC is a bit more tricky now because the minimap doesn't track the real version durring the illusion phase. He also takes much less knockback now.
I was doing my expert playthrough on the drunk seed and i first heard the otherworld soundtrack and i quute liked it, but it did get to a point that i missed the original music. I really like the base soundtrack
Never knew about the Light's Bane effect until now. Always did crimson worlds for Golden Shower.
4:35 the only thing that went though my head when he commented on the music was “just wait until he hears A Sweet Menace”

Drunk worlds have all ores in them, ie tin and its equivalent ore are both present in the world, as well as myrthil/orichaleum, titanium/adamantly etc. Certain generation, dialogue, and loot will happen based on the amount of ore in world and changing every day cycle. Drunk worlds are actually really complex despite seeming so simple but vanilla terraria has a lot of mechanics that depend on world gen

It's not just early game, I started a new Expert Melee run and I have NEVER died less in an expert run. It's not even CLOSE how much more survivable I've been - once I got Night's Edge, I never looked back. I died, like, once to the twins? And a couple times to an early Pirate Invasion. And... that's about it, really, aside from the random unavoidable "whoops those were Explosives," or "swarmed by 800 mobs in the Underground Desert/Jungle" scenarios. I laughed at Plantera, and the Golem, and was able to outlast the first Solar Eclipse and even my first Martian Invasion with NO DEATHS. Maybe this will be the character who can finally take on the Moon Lord on Expert? That's my last real Terraria hurdle, so fingers crossed.

when i started my master mode playthrough, i was mentally preparing myself for dying countless amounts of times, but in reality, early pre-hardmode and hardmode are a little rocky but you will get over it.

I’ve been playing melee on the Dontdigup seed and it is a ton of fun. Volcano is awesome for crowd control and I got lucky finding the Ice Sword, Enchanted Sword, and the components for the Trimerang. Tons of fun so far
I used the flaming mace to fight King Slime as it has a bit of range, can set it on fire and can leave the head on the floor for multiple hits.
Ice sword is good for King Slime too.
great terraria playthrough. I would recommend the blade o grass then the nights edge.

I might be wrong on this, but I’m fairly certain 1.4.4 buffed the drop rate of the magical pumpkin seed. I’ve gotten like, three of them.

I loved the blade of grass in my early days of the patch, feels so good to use with the added DoT debuff and projectile, would highly recommend

Dark lance and Gungnir both got a major upgrade and the dark lances dps is better than the nights edge. Also the dripper crippler for early hardmode.
My favourite pre hard mode sword is the blade of grass I’d not know why I just love it
It's funny to me that people just don't play melee.
I exclusively play melee, and I'm really loving the changes. Light's Bane is fun, but trust me, flails are where it's at pre-hardmode before Night's Edge.
The standard Mace is alright, but get some torches and upgrade it, you get the Flaming Mace. The added fire debuff is just really good. This is what I used to beat Eye and subsequently upgrade to Light's Bane. The next upgrade would be from the Corruption, the Ball O' Hurt. This is what I recommend over Meatball because that requires Crimtane and Tissue Samples, while Ball O' Hurt only requires Shadow Orbs to be broken, plus it's good against Eater, which will then upgrade you to Shadow Armor. Also, I personally don't deal with King Slime unless he naturally spawns. He just doesn't drop anything worth it, since gem hooks are arguably easier to get, and if not you can get one from the Goblin, who also gives you Rocket Boots. I've gone without a bottle item until getting Goblin after I beat Skeletron.
After getting Shadow Armor is when I'd say to tackle Skeletron. Flails do alright against him, though I'll admit grenades and the Musket took him out MUCH quicker. The Dungeon doesn't have much for you, other than the standard Cobalt Shield, and the Murumasa for Night's Edge, and my favorite pre-hardmode melee weapon, the Blue Moon. This is a BEAST of a flail, and is super strong pre-hardmode. I recommend getting this before heading to the Jungle. Jungle is just your standard Blade of Grass grind and Queen Bee if you so choose.
That's about where I'm at personally in my new melee playthrough. Blue Moon + Shadow Armor is great if you don't want to grind too much.
The volcano(fiery greatsword) is amazing now, I was able to shred the for the worthy skeletron with it

I Have So Many Things I Want To Type, But Feel Like I’ll Overload The Comments, I Have Heard All The Otherworld Themes, Due To Doing 6 Playthroughs On The Drunk World Seed In Master Mode, I Think The Nighttime Theme Is Kind Of Unnerving At First, And The Ice Theme Is Just Menacing, The Ocean Theme Is Amazing! You Should Hear The Blood Moon And Meteorite Theme, It Might Frighten You, The Towers Theme Is Really Cool, And I Think The Moon Lord’s Theme Is Also Different, But I’m Not 100% Sure, It’s Been A Few Months Since My Last Run On The Drunk Seed. The Usual Boss Themes Are Different, And There Are Of Course Many Other Changes To The World. I Should Probably Stop Blabbering On, So I’ll Just Try To Be Quiet Now, Keep Up The Good Videos! All Of Them Are Great!

Something cool I learned about the lights bane is that the slashes change color when you change your cursor color but I don't know if you can do it on PC cause I don't have one but you can on console 👍

Halloween is also good so we can get the bat hook!! That hook Carried my through early Deathmode calamity.
As someone who has only ever played this game in the month of october over the course of 3 years, i never knew pumpkins were an event item and pumpkin armour is the first thing i get every time.
tip for drunk seed: every day the “main” evil swaps to the other. so if it’s corruption on one then the next it will be crimson. you’ll still have both but it’ll alternate for stuff like boss drops, artificial mimics, stuff like that. excited for this playthrough!
ghosts spawn naturally in the halloween event, i had a mod that had both seasonal events on constantly and had to turn it off for that reason alone

After a mage and ranger playthrough only, I was delaying playing as a melee a lot cause I thought it was just weak. Since 1.4.4 came out, I thought on playing melee master mode ftw for the first time and i gotta say it surely stand it's ground.
The new reworks definitely seem like Re-Logic wants us to RIP AND TEAR at a closer range now huh
Would probably even make sense to take that approach with more weapons and add some ways to recuperate lost hp on Expert and upwards

Ghosts just randomly spawn now during Halloween
I do not believe it is just this seed that spawns the ghosts. I think, anytime it's Halloween-time you get more ghosts as well as ravens. I could be wrong though, because I've always played on drunk world when I started any new characters in recent months; ever since they introduced it. Partly so I have both evils to choose from, and partly so I can get all the alternate ores in one map. With the NEW extractionator+ (can't remember it's actual name) the ores aren't as important. So it comes down to whether I want the drops from crimson and its mimics, or corruption and its mimics. Which I sometimes know ahead of time, based on the type of character I want to play. So this update actually made it easier for me to NOT have to do Drunk World every time any more. lol
PS: Shark may be new to you, but it's pretty common. I'd cherish that little sugar-glider fella, if I were playing. But I'll watch, regardless of who you pick. lol ... It's jut not a deal-breaker, which PET a person picks. LOL
Keep an eye out for "dirtiest block" it can look just like a single piece of dirt in your inventory (especially since you only find it sometimes, after mining a lot at once), and I think I accidentally trashed one away in my current playthrough, because I didn't know about it yet, and it did just look like a piece of dirt that didn't stack right.
True melee King Slime is kinda rough, if troubles are somehow ever had in the future I recommend use of spears.
If you are willing to grind for it the gladiator set from the marble biome is actually really underrated. It's gives high defense and its set bonus is knockback immunity. You should also craft the new boomerang if you can it's called like the trimarang.
That's a super interesting set bonus, I feel like it would be super handy in the early game and would pair well with melee. I'll definitely consider checking that out, thanks for the suggestions!

It is truly criminal that you did not even _discuss_ how much better the basic wood and ore broadswords are now; more importantly, the fact that they are not only viable but useful. Over 70% of all prehardmode melee weapons were significantly (positively) impacted by 1.4.4, and none should be more noted than the buffs to the weakest, not the strongest.
I'm trying to do a True Melee run right now and without the Fiery Greatsword (due to it now spawning a fire pillar projectile) it's really difficult.

I know it's just bullet-sponges and all, but it genuinely makes me think so much more about where I go and what I do. I used to just jump into the jungle headfirst to get some jungle armor etc., no way I'd get away with that now.

If 1.5 ever happens, I hope they rework the rest of the melee weapons. Imagine people getting excited for amethyst because they will be able to make a purple phasesaber! That would never happen right now, but if they updated the swords? Then it could happen.

Only thing is that with the eater of worlds I had to wait until I got the nights edge to kill it it's so hard without it.
Gotta go get the trimerang! It's new and a bit of a grind, but it's a lot of fun.
