I am a Hollander, i speak Dutch and live in the lands of the Netherlands. (in the province North Holland) I refer to being Dutch when ask by non Dutch speaking people. i only refer to the Netherlands when asked what is being Dutch and/or a Hollander. You can mirror it to a New Yorker, that speaks English and lives in United States (In the province New York) New York = or was New Amsterdam... (New Amsterdam became New York on September 8, 1664,) The "rebranding" to Netherlands is more for tourist and/or the next generation...
The netherlands not the S at the end is plural , a union of several different states with an own goverment. Holland is the one that is the most powerfull and wealthy province ( only split becouse of power balance) 6.6 milion people with half the GDP of the nation. To make a comparision this province alone would dwarf norway , portugal and several other nations .

This is purely an English language problem. You call countries in your language whatever you want. The cultural and geographic ignorance reflected in that is entirely on the British. Claiming that the Netherlands only became independent in 19th century is another reflection of that btw.
