This is the fastest ride at Alton towers at 68mph and the tallest with the drop being 55metres tall. It is the 3rd fastest rollercoaster in the uk and was the first ever dive coaster to be made in the world. Sure she may be short but give oblivion the credit she deserves- an awesome ride!
Yes it's short, yes it's very old, yes it's not as good compared to today (Although still a brilliant ride imo ) But what we need to remember is this was the worlds first dive coaster. Summer Ryan yeah it’s ok man but these rides are tested every single day to make sure that everything’s safe and running properly. Plus it’s good fun too :)

This was my first ever ride, and I can still remember waiting at the top of the drop and my friend going "oh shit" just before we went down. The queue was honestly the most scary part of it because it has loads of old TVs telling you all the thing that could go wrong or that are bad on oblivion.
Had a similar experience with Baron 1898, my first (and only) dive coaster. This dive coaster has a misty pit and you can hear ghosts singing, which makes you more anxious. The queue was long so I had more than 60 minutes to watch the trains on the coaster go round and round. Inside there are pre shows on which basically tell you; you’re doomed. Ended up loving the ride after being really scared at first.
Oblivion is like the first ever phone and then came the iPhone or Samsung. I mean oblivion is the mother and basis of vertical drops. It might not be as big but it's the first that's what makes it special.

This is one of those rides that you climb off with tears streaming from your eyes and a huge grin on your face. Then you run around to the 15 mile long queue walk (usually empty-ish now) and jump straight back on.

I would say Oblivion, although not the best in the park, is good at least once, because you get that initial scare factor of a massive fall. Then there was also that woman who got her seatbelt unplugged during the drop and she got more than she bargained for, the video is on UA-cam somewhere!
Cool ride! I say that as a lifelong Six Flags Magic Mountain (Valencia, CA-USA) Extreme Coaster junkie. You guys are lucky to have a unique ride that paved the way. Thank you G.B.
+Mya Kearney Are you going on Oblivion or just any rollercoaster?? I haven't been on Oblivion, but I can assure you rollercoasters are safe and fun, so enjoy the ride!!!
1:19 The actual "Alton Towers" shown in the near distance makes this ride such a classic. Such beautiful scenery before the ride petrifies you with gravity defiance! If I do go to Alton Towers again someday, this will be *one* of the first rides I will do. When we went in 1999 (just a year after it opened and thus far our only visit), me and my sister were too young to ride it, and so us and our parents just spent long hours watching others ride it (and *wishing* we weren't them!).
this is a classic, and tbh it still beats the newer ‘improved’ dive coasters. for the first of it’s kind, it’s brilliant. The simpleness of it is great for the ones unsure about it, and too many extras would just make the ride too much, and it wouldn’t be as frightening and exciting. It has just the right height, drop and speed. It’s definitely one of the best at Alton, and my all time favourite. The theming is great, and the anticipation makes it ten times better. You feel amazing once you’ve done it
I seriously don't remember the wait at the top being so short. I remember waiting up there for so long and being actually vertical for way longer than it seems in the video. One of my favourite rollercoasters I've ever been on
Going there next month for 3 days I have a big fear of rollercoasters. I am going on galactica, thirteen and rita for sure but should I just do all of them??
Absolutely! Go on everything at least once and if you don't like it you never have to ride it again. Also Nemesis is the best Coaster in the UK and one of the best in the world, you can't miss out on that!
The first ever rollercoaster I went on :') I remember when I was about 10, I got dragged on to this kicking and screaming by my Dad. Can't thank him enough because now I have 0 fear in rollercoasters now :D
I went to Alton towers yesterday with my mum and a few friends, I was very skeptical about smiler especially because of its dark backstories. Other than that I had a wonderful time and tried to have as much fun as I possibly could even though I didn’t get to go on exactly all the rides.
Went on this ride in 2002. I still remember the acceleration on that drop. Unfortunately, I only went on once because it was out of order for the rest of the day, but I'm glad I experienced it.
Alton Towers pioneers everything. From one of the first inverts, the first dive coaster and the first flying coaster. Now they have the coaster with the most inversions. Britain is lucky to have such a great park
I'm going to Alton Towers in a few weeks and even though I've been before, I've never been on any serious roller coasters. I just really do not like the idea of loops and don't feel ready to go on a serious coaster like that. But, I have been on Tidal Wave at Thorpe Park (which I loved) and I've been on the Tower Of Terror at Disneyland Paris. I don't know what possessed me to do a drop ride but I really wanted to go on it and ended up loving it! I'm thinking about going on Oblivion because it's a similar height to Tidal Wave and could be the same force as Tower of Terror. Could someone please explain the G-force of Oblivion? Do you think it's worse or better (as in the dropping stomach feeling) than drop rides?
I'm 22 and last year was the first time I ever went on any of the "big" rides before, going next Monday and for the first time can't wait to go on them now! I guess some people are different but, for me the only rides that really turn your stomach at Alton Towers are Nemesis and Rita. You could easily go on Oblivion it doesn't turn your stomach or have any g-force or anything, it's just short and fast, the main thing about it and why everyone loves the ride is that it's all about the fear factor
GreyFox985 Thank you for the advice, it really helped! I think I'm definitely going to go on Oblivion now. Like you said, it's only short so even if I don't like it, it's over and done with within seconds! Actually quite excited to ride it now! :)
Everything I've ever read about this is: do *_not_* hold your breath or breathe just before the dive. It lasts on average for 2 seconds and a maximum of 6 seconds (if the day has just started and therefore it's a little slower), but you're gonna regret it.
imma teach u how not to e afraid of this ride(do not read if u went on it) -even though the ride is old its very safe so if ur belt comes undone ur still safe -its only the height of 13teen tht is 60m and13teen is a family ride. trust me. -look straight foward and if ur very scared i suggest to close ur eyes -there is a like 40% chance tht the ride will do an accident. the smiler is new and the recent accident was mab error. -the ride does check before the theme park opens. lets hope u dont be afraid😄

Thank you for the advice, it really helped! I think I'm definitely going to go on Oblivion now. Like you said, it's only short so even if I don't like it, it's over and done with within seconds! Actually quite excited to ride it now! :)
megthewanted123 Awesome! You'll love it trust me ^_^
megthewanted123 Go on runaway mine train it is EPIC =D wooooo!!
Sophie Sykes you guys should grow up, and ride helix and atmosfear in liseberg Sweden!
going up is scary on a day wig bad weather. when it’s nice and sunny, the view distracts you from the drop lmao. this is my fave ride so fun!!!
0:38 R.I.P submission, I only got to ride you once, you will be missed
That was a good ride
Here from TikTok 😭😭
I’m underwhelmed. Ride is 2 seconds
Everything I've ever read about this is: do *_not_* hold your breath or breathe just before the dive. It lasts on average for 2 seconds and a maximum of 6 seconds (if the day has just started and therefore it's a little slower), but you're gonna regret it.
I remember going on this 4 times in a row when I was 12😅
I went on it 12 times in a row when I was still in my dads ball sack
@@misplacedkiwi9498 😂😂😂😂
IT'S A BABY SHEIKRA!!!!
This is way older than SheiKra...
rct3sweed That's what I just said...
rct3sweed I know. It just looks like a mini sheikra. I know exactly why though.
Sheikra is better
***** really? so ur saying the prototype is always better? must I remind you of The Bat, Windjammer Surf Racers, Son of Beast, and Screamroller?
Always the first ride I go to whenever I go. Sitting in the front is the best.
imma teach u how not to e afraid of this ride(do not read if u went on it)
-even though the ride is old its very safe so if ur belt comes undone ur still safe
-its only the height of 13teen tht is 60m and13teen is a family ride. trust me.
-look straight foward and if ur very scared i suggest to close ur eyes
-there is a like 40% chance tht the ride will do an accident. the smiler is new and the recent accident was mab error.
-the ride does check before the theme park opens.
lets hope u dont be afraid😄

This ride is 60 feet tall but has a 180 foot drop... Yeah
It goes underground like quite a few rides there...👏
Alton Towers can't go above the trees, so when they want to go big, they build down.
AdrenalineAddict610 Actually very true. I read it up myself
Evolution Artwork did you not see the massive hole underground? Research 👏👏👏
AA610 that is awesome
That drop is absolutely fucking insane. Never been on anything like it. I'm a huge wimp on rollercoasters, refuse to go on one's that go upside down... Was convinced to go on this and I've never felt so fucking out of control before going down that vertical drop. Literally felt like I was gonna die lmao
Give skydiving a go if you like this 😎
D M i have a gut felling you screamed loudly
Ur here from Tiktok 🤣🤣
When I went on this, I swear you spend more time on the chainlift than actually on the drop XD
I can’t wait till all the them parks open there opening in 2 and another half of a week so EXCITED
who else is here from the tik tok?😁
I’m here bc I went there but I was to scared and I wanted to see how it was
Use me as the came from tiktok button
I've been on this ride at least six time. Nothing compares to the fear of being dropped, never mind being held over the edge, just like this ride. It's 100% a experience everyone should at least feel.
I’m so proud of myself for actually going on this lol
was it good? im scared to go on it
1:28 Look closely you can see Ollie’s phone
Iv been on this ride like 6 times and it's thee best ever. The drop is huge and feels like forever when going into the ground. Can't wait to go back again
is it just me or does the cloud at 1:02 look like a dog with wings trying to eat a turtle?
You high sis
Just you
