Irish Hutch | S8 E7

- One of the most impressive pieces Norm discovers during the course of his travels in wine country is a 200-year-old Irish Hutch owned by the Trevorses of Mayacamas Vineyards. This pine hutch features two flat paneled doors and two large dovetailed drawers at its base. Atop the base is a plate rack with simple ornamentation and cornice molding. Lovingly detailed, with plenty of room for displaying china or collectibles, this is one of the most ambitious projects Norm makes this season.
Season: 8 | Episode: 7
Original Air Date: February 17, 1996

There are a lot of great wood workers out there but it all started with Norm. He inspired many like me. He is the true master.
Agree. I built a hutch that is similar in style to the hutch in my uncle home in Italy. I would never consider such a challenge if it were not for Norm Abrams. I watch his show when I was a kid in NYC and it was all I needed to believe I could build anything, if I tried.
Me too

the opening music makes me immediately feel so nice, it brings back the gentle feeling of happiness.
Another beautiful piece of craftsmanship!
For me though this needed to be a 2 episode project, as parts of the build feel a bit rushed with not as much detail as usual.
It was a packed season, and this would have normally been two, but they ran out of slots.
Pretty cool Irish Hutch Norm Abram.
New life for old wood. 👍👍👍
Norm always does quality work. :)
Beautiful piece, especially that finish.
Thanks for another great episode. And thanks for doing them more often, I know it must take some time to process these.
That’s beautiful. What a great project.
To my knowledge, this is the last time the Molding Head Cutter was used on the show. I guess the Router Station made it obsolete.
Great video 📹 and Work project
I like how Norm avoids mis-cuts, nail blow-outs, running out of material, and so on. Sigh...😀
Check out the next project, the wine rack, where he curves a bottom molding. It doesn't go so well the first time 😳 (coming Tuesday)
Thank you! Can’t wait for the wine rack project on HD UA-cam video. This is an ambitious project and I bought the plans back in the day BUT not the DVD. Trust me, tackling this project requires both! Looking forward to Tuesday’s re-release!
I actually would like to see some outtakes from this show. "Okay now that the mwoatises are nice and squayah, I'm gonna cut a dado onna inside edge foa the bottom shelf." *table saw noises*. "...Aw shoot I cut it on the outside of da boahd."
Cheers to Norm, Russ and crew for these California Wine Country Season 8 episodes and projects. There is more to California wines than just Napa Valley circa 1996. Try the Paso Robles AVAs - all 11 of them - we are gaining on Napa every year with industry and enthusiastic recognition of our Cabernet Sauvignon and fruit forward blends. Excellent project and build with this Irish Hutch - looking forward to the rest of Season 8 projects. Cheers! 🍷
Me gusta este estilo de carpintería.
Gracias. We like it too.
Norm is the yardstick end of.
I built one from some old timber from Summerville college in Oxford England where I was working
Needs to do a welsh dresser .
❤️👍
I know the description makes note of the original air date for each project but is any information regarding the filming/production dates still known for these seasons? Just curious about whether some may have been filmed together but then spread out later on, for example the chimney cupboard project featured at the end of season 7 and the first few projects of season 8.
The field trips are generally filmed well in advance and ganged up with other shows like TOH and Victory Garden. The projects were filmed over two days, Monday and Wednesday, with Norm shooting TOH on Tuesday in the fall prior to airing.
@@newyankeeworkshopSo the exact dates are unknown? From about season 15 or 16 the dates are known as anyone who knew about the NYW webcam could watch the filming process taking place.
I'd never heard that piece of furniture called a hutch before. In Britain we'd call that a dresser.
Wikipedia calls "hutch" and "American English" word. So you'd call something to go in a kitchen and hold plates etc. a "dresser?" On this side of the pond a "dresser" is a chest of drawers that holds clothing, sometimes with a mirror on top. A dresser that's double high - chest on chest - is called a highboy. There's also a chest of drawers with a wardrobe on top called a "tallboy." Any of these correspond?
@@rlevitta your dresser would be what we Brits would call a dressing table, although ours are more like a desk with drawers on either side and mirror on top. The tallboy is one item we have a common name for, but in Britain a hutch is a kind of cage that you would keep a small animal like a pet rabbit in.
Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: There is no more important safety rule, than to wear these safety glasses.
But did you double tap your safety glass frames?
