Gun Safety and Storage: Mateo's Story | Many Paths to Gun Safety | Own It? Respect It. Secure It.

Mateo tells the story of his path to firearm safety. He is a gun owner who's kept a personal handgun at home for several years, always tucked into the top drawer on his nightstand. Fast forward a few years and Mateo is about to move into a new house with his girlfriend Anna and her six-year-old daughter Gabriella. Anna always knew about the gun but until now, they hadn't really considered how the gun would fit into their new lifestyle. Anna had lots of questions and Mateo was open to talking about how and where the gun would be stored and who should have access to it. Mateo learned all he could about safe storage options that could fit their lifestyle and make both he and Anna feel comfortable and safe. Mateo and Anna still have some decisions to make but they now have the experience to know that having a gun in the home is a big commitment that includes having a conversation with Gabriella about never touching the gun and getting Anna proper training in safe gun handling and firearm safety if she ever intends to handle it herself.

More Americans-especially women-are buying guns for many different reasons, ranging from personal protection to recreational shooting. While there are many different reasons why someone would choose to buy a gun, the common thread among them must be a commitment to store firearms responsibly when not in use so they can’t be picked up by a child, stolen or accessed by someone who may want to harm themselves.

Anyone who keeps an unsecured firearm in a home with children is irresponsible and shouldn’t have a gun. Anyone in the house should also learn about the safety rules and safe handling of firearms!

You have absolutely no right to say who should or should not own a gun per the Bill of rights article 2A. Many parents teach children about guns very early in life. Stop trying to regulate peoples rights.

Need to teach the kid about the gun period 6 is plenty old enough. I started teaching my kids at 3. You need to have your bedroom door locked if your kids got friends over
