Another tip I read somewhere that can help with shopping impulses is checking out books from your local library. It gives you the satisfaction of "shopping," but at the same time benefits your library as well. :)
Hey Ben, I was already troubled by the many things I don't need in my house and your video triggered a closet purge. I'm far away to play minimalism in any league yet (a baby, a toddler and a wife thats not fully onboard yet) but I love simple rules like this one. Planning to stick with it for clothing and maybe do the same for my books... although thinking fast and slow (and nudge, and a couple other on behavioral science) are sure to stay. Greetings from Brazil! And thanks for the insights.
@@YNABofficial Do it! That Gloomhaven and Twilight Imperium appearance in one of your videos got my partner and I excited to build a budget so we could afford more boardgames 😂
I got mine from Son of a Tailor because it allowed me to customize my measurements (I have the physique of a very tall person... without being very tall 🙃). - Ben M 🎨
I not only enjoyed the quirky humor in this video but the simple act of flipping that saying on it's head really did it for me...I think it's what I needed to start making more sense of the downsizing I've been going after (without the after-effect of re-upsizing!). Thanks so much!
I liked Ben when he just did YNAB, now I like him even more now that I know he's a minimalist! Don't leave us hanging Ben...what shirt is that? Got link?
For legal reasons, I'll say that I'm not sponsored by nor does YNAB partner with this company 😉 I got a Wool V-Neck from Son of a Tailor. I wanted something that fit me really well, and SoaT lets me do custom measurements. - Ben M 🎨
Thanks for the food for thought. This might serve me well not just in slowing down purchases but also as a boost to get rid of the things in my to donate, etc. piles. I'm someone who keeps getting stuck at the "sorted but not actually out of my house" phase of decluttering.
My wife and I struggled with this. I am a minimalist simply because I can't stand clutter. That was my up bringing. My wife on the other hand came from a family of hoarders. You can see the struggle there. Also, I am a huge proponent of "buy the good stuff once instead of the cheap stuff multiple times." So, tell me more abut these t-shirts.
I feeeeeel that. I'm married to someone who has a similar repulsion to clutter, so it's a little easier for us to reach consensus. I've been doing the merino wool thing for a few months now, and I really couldn't be happier. As long as I hang it up each night, it always smells fine, it feels great, and it's actually pretty temperature regulating. And most companies that work with merino wool put a lot of care into their products (and seem to care about the environment too!) - I'm not sure you can go wrong with any of them. Right now, I'm actually doing Wool & Prince's 100-day challenge with one of their sweatshirts. If I wear this shirt every day for 100 days (and prove it with a picture a day), I get another one for free! 😁 - Ben M 🎨
@@YNABofficial Awesome, thanks for the info Ben. I have had merino wool socks and base layers, never thought about it as a top layer before. I'll have to check them out.
Love the video! but I'm really curious what that shirt it. I switch to black tee shirt wardrobe a couple years ago, but the ones I get are super cheap, and I've been looking for tees that don't fall apart so quickly.
I got mine from Son of a Tailor because it allows me to customize the measurements. But I've also seen a lot of great merino stuff from places like Unbound, Wool & Prince, Duckworth... there are a lot of great options out there! - Ben M 🎨
I got my shirt from Son of a Tailor. The material is a little thinner compared to some other companies like Wool & Prince, Unbound, etc. which works fine for me since I primarily work from home at a desk. If he's out and about, he'll probably want something a little more durable. - Ben M 🎨
Ben! I'm a merino wool person too. I did Wool&'s 100-day dress challenge starting December 2020 and it pretty much changed my life. I have a wool category in my budget. I'm also a professional organizer and everything you said resonated with me. Thank you!
Brilliant! I'm a minimalist and never loved the one in one out rule, because I don't want to get rid of things that have life left (not sustainable). One out one in is perfect!
I absolutely love watching his videos and I am a new user. I've already done 10 different budgets in a month lol! But I keep watching his videos and trying again
I set a rule a year or two ago that I only buy dresses with pockets. I love wearing dresses in the summer...and I realized the only dresses I regularly grab to wear are the ones with pockets! So....new rule! It knocks out a lot of the cheaper options, but it means I wear the ones I have!
I'm the same way with pants for everyday. Just decided to purge my closet of yoga pants (I'm retired, it's my uniform now) with no pockets, and splurge on a few pair with terrific pockets. I don't lose my phone, and I have more closet space so I wear more of my clothing.
I like this idea too I’m trying to replace things once they break or become too out of date and useless. Whichever happens first Rather than buying something and then trying to figure out what to get rid of That makes sense to me If it’s an item like a stuffed toy or something and I’m sure I want it in my budget, then for right now I have so much junk I could probably get rid it two or three items first. Which I might do.
Faaaaaaair questions! Everybody in this space is different, but I usually wash after either (a) some big spill, usually thanks to my toddler or (b) it's just been a while. (I'm not kidding when I say how odor-resistant this merino stuff is - it's nuts!) Washing does wear down clothes over time, and tumble drying is even harder on clothes. Since I want these to last as looooong as possible, I actually hand wash and air dry my shirts to reduce this. (And I actually... kind of like the ritual? To me, it feels way more calming to hand wash two shirts than to manage a whole load of laundry. And I'm reaching a point where, in theory, I could hand wash my whole wardrobe without too much hassle.) But my main reason for washing less is that I HATE when I'm reaching for a piece of clothing and it's in a machine somewhere. 😑 Especially since I want to just wear the same outfit everyday, I wanted something that wouldn't need constant laundering. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. 🙃 - Ben M 🎨
@@YNABofficial This was the best response ever. Thank you for introducing me to your world. While I don't think I will join you in said world, I feel like I know you so much better and I appreciate you. Keep doing what you're doing. Thinking fast and slow was an amazing read and the logic behind your purchase slowing seems legit.
Over the summer I got rid of more, cheap clothing, than clothing items I brought in. I just don't want to have too much, it feels overwhelming. Also, they didn't fit like they did pre-pandemic, lol. And since I was not buying as many little random cheap clothing items, I was able to save up in my clothing sinking fund enough to buy my Strathberry, 100% cashmere, thick and fluffy (not that thin stuff), full length poncho, which I love! Now to get rid of the mostly acrylic, unattractively-pilling poncho I had before, as I don't even want to wear it anymore. Should have done it like you said, got rid of that first! But here's a real question. What if I get rid of a decent (not falling apart) thing I already have before getting something else that I think is better. But when I get the new thing, it's not as great as I thought it would be? Now I have a not so great thing, that maybe I have to return, and I don't have the decent thing I at least sort of liked before, because I got rid of it? How will the world continue to turn while I look for a replacement?! Love the cute sketches, btw.
That is the risk, isn't it? And that very thought is actually what makes One Out, One In such a powerful slowing mechanism. If you're trialing something, you could always designate the old thing as being "in limbo" (put it in a box with other donation items, for instance). If you're happy with the new thing, then you can get rid of the old thing; if you're not, you can return the new thing. A little bit of prompting upfront still feels pretty different from just acquiring something and changing your wardrobe retroactively. - Ben M 🎨
wow, great idea! :D never thought to apply loss aversion + the endowment effect like this. since I started YNAB I've been completely converted and feel much less guilt making larger but more meaningful purchases now :)
I've started thinking of my YNAB categories like the gift cards I get on my birthday: "Wow, I have money set aside JUST FOR THIS!" It injects a lot of joy into these bigger purchases. - Ben M 🎨
Hmmm! That's a good question. I mean, it's not like I have a spare Carnival Cruise lying around... 🙃 We have a tendency to say "YES!" to any experience that sounds fun or cool, so it's easy for us to overload. I wonder if there might be some wisdom in transferring this mindset to how we schedule our time... 🤔 - Ben M 🎨
Honestly, I still don't have a proper eurogame in my collection. Every time I go to the board game store, I think, "Y'know, I should get a worker placement game" and then I walk out with a game about dodos racing on top of dinosaurs (true story). 🙃 - Ben M 🎨
"Junior Varsity Minimalist" is the term I never knew I needed. LOL
I need to do this with books. But it probably needs to be two out, one in for me.
Same for me with books. I actually do 3 in 1out. 😂😮😢. I need help🎉😊
