These are fantastic tips. This is how I learned to speak German. I didn't have anyone to talk German to, so I emerged myself in the language with basic tv shows, music and radio. Now I am learning Portuguese and your channel is really helping!

+Khadja Paux Download the Spotify app and search up the playlist 'Made in Germany'; some great up-and-coming artists like Mark Forster and Silbermond. Another great tool that I use is listening to the radio station '100% Deutsch' on the TuneIn Radio app

Well I used to get Ds and Fs in English and I couldnt build a simple sentence or even understand what people were trying to tell me in English.. I started to follow English accounts on Instagram and watch Superwoman(She has a Canadian accent which was the easiest accent for me to understand) and now I get like As and Bs. I am proud at myself that I have come so far. And now I am struggling with French.. Leh

Some other methods I've used. Listening to nursery rhymes and reading children's stories if you are a beginner, these things are designed to teach children a language so it will definitely help you with basic vocab. Meeting people, I can almost guarantee, no matter what language you are learning there are native speakers in your city. The best way to find them is through social media or ad sites which allow you to post social groups. Just explain why you want to meet people and your level of expertise in the language. A lot of people will be willing to do it because it will help improve their English and they know the situation you're in.

Nevertheless, have as much conversations as you can, since through listening, you won't get really better in the language you're learning. For vocabulary, read books. For your pronunciation, well, I'd recommend "Sounds American", "Rachel's English" and "The Accent's Way". They will be relevant for you if you aim to speak GenAm.
Have fun, though. Just wanted to give you some tips.

For the past year or two I've been really trying to improve my spanish. I watch Masterchef (Argentina, I find the accent easier to understand than most).. Music trying to pay attention to song lyrics, quotes by Spanish authors, following the news in Spanish on my phone and last but not least.. I use one of the countless language groups you can find on whatsapp.
The latest quote I came across (by Julio Cortazar) : "Tenemos que obligar a la realidad a que responda a nuestros sueños, hay que seguir soñando hasta abolir la falsa frontera entre lo ilusorio y lo tangible, hasta realizarnos y descubrirnos que el paraíso estaba ahí, a la vuelta de todas las esquinas"
    Learning languages is sexy!

Omg I love you guys! I'm from Brazil and a lot of people here take english classes outside school. I tried it but it's just so boring and it doesn't matter how many years you're taking these classes, you probably won't be confident enough to take in english in a foreign country. That's why I learned it on internet! I've become so much better that now I can listen to youtube videos without subtitles and I understand english song lyrics without having to translate it to portuguese! I think one of the things that helped me the most was Tumblr because it's a mainly english website. Also, music is the best thing when it comes to learning a new language! I'm currently listening to some french artists from your spotify playlist to help me :) xx

Just go up to someone and ask if they speak that language. As far as I know, it is not rude to go up to someone and ask that. You will be amazed by how excited and grateful these people are when you attempt to speak their language. My dad is a native Spanish speaker and his face lights up when he hears my friends seriously trying to communicate with him. I'm learning Arabic and I went to the gas station and started speaking with the guy at the register and he was beyond happy that I was trying to say little phrases like "hello" "my name is" "thank you". These are the little steps you need to take to learn a language. It's so satisfying to get some words out of speaking. Good luck everyone!

I'd def say watch korean variety/dramas, most of them are already english subbed (I rec kshowonline.com if you're interested in variety shows and dramacool for dramas). Talktomeinkorean is a really good site to start with the basics and grammar to progress. It's also a plus if you do happen to understand Chinese, bc from when I was learning Korean, you could direct translate quite an amount of Korean words/phrases to Chinese so it was easier for me to understand.

+Ana Pisani TenguGo is a great app. I learned the Hindi and Arabic/Urdu alphabet with it...It took me like a week to be able to read Hindi...There is also a comic that explains the Korean alphabet really well...Search for the Polyglot group on UA-cam and someone can send you the image I'm sure...

+Ana Pisani I was thinking about the same as watching the video. I have been studying japanese for years and the reading and writing is still very difficult because it's a whole different thing. Two things that works for me: studying by flashcards and trying to read music lyrics as listening to it, like in a karaoke. It helps you get used not just to the individual characters, but to whole words and expressions. And as you are talking about korean, I know it's not gonna be difficult to find some music to listen haha

    This is an amazing video!
I am a Chinese guy and I've been learning English for more than 11 years, but I actually speak and use this language for just maximum 3 years. And now I can proudly say I speak English perfectly, even learning French with the foundation of English not my mother tongue Chinese. I this it is very essential that a person who is studying a foreign language should realise the languages need to be working not only for these lame language tests in school, most importantly for using them in every day living. Repeat them when you hear someone saying a new word you don't know, speak to the cashier when going to the supermarkets buying some food, read them when you seeing an ad board on the street and of course pause and learn them carefully when you watching tv series with the foreign language subtitles on. This is the core purpose of learning a language and the tip i wanna share with y'all. thank you damon and jo.

  • @freddylowe4900

My way of learning a language:
    1) Set your phone to your new language before you learn anything!
    2) Download a language exchange app (I use Tandem or HelloTalk) before you learn anything!
    3) Use a language course that either is free or costs next to nothing: (Duolingo and Babbel are really good, NOT Rosetta Stone!)
    4) Study every day and stick to the plan with this!
    5) Speak the language EVERYDAY on that language learning app you bought earlier!

I used the app to learn French, Italian, and Danish. Aside that it's free for a broke person like me, it's an advantage. On my opinion, I liked the concept of their learning technique and when it comes to a couple of sentence structures can be confusing. If you want to use the app only for the exposure of basic words and usage. 😃
Are you using the app? What language are your focus, mine would be French.

Hiiii, I tried this top youtuber tip but it didnt work out well to me since I had trouble relating to most of the UA-camrs I found and/or their content, so I think I improved that tip a little. First, I think of a subject or kind of content i'm already used to watch in my native language, then I turn it into keywords in the language that I want to find the youtubers and videos and search on UA-cam. This makes easier to find something you'll really enjoy! For instance, I use this to find reviews about movies and series that I'm interested in, dicussions about the ones I already watched and so. Thanks so much for the tips Damon and Jo! And for those struggling to learn another languages, do not give up, you'll get there!!!

Learning phonetics is what helped me in learning Spanish. The phonetics book that I purchased had diagrams that were helpful and showed how the tongue is suppose to be placed, which was really beneficial. So I was able to learn how to pronounce "vaca" with a soft b and "beso" with a hard B. I also studied abroad in Cuernavaca, Morelos (Mexico) and attended a language school there called Kukulcan, for two weeks. That 2 week immersion was the most I ever learned. More then I ever learned in any classroom. I stayed with a host family. We would have language discussions at the dinner table. I walked around town, talking to the locals. It was great!

My biggest tips are definitely definitely watching UA-cam videos in the language, listen to almost all of your music in that language, definitely try to learn song lyrics, I also suggest learning more about the culture in general cause then you'll be a little more interested in continuing your experience (as well as slang cause it's always fun to learn to talk natively), oh also going to restaurants or any place you can practice that language, and most most most most definitely try your absolute hardest to pronounce things correctly from the beginning because once you have less of an accent you'll feel so much more comfortable actually putting that language into practice, oh and definitely have shower conversations with yourself in that language and always try to be thinking like oh I wonder what how to say this and then actually search it up because you'll be trying to learn things you actually say a lot! Love this video so so much I just found you guys and am so excited to start watching your videos!

    some study tips i use;
    - If ur a visual learner then when im writing down vocab i draw out the word, ex. a shirt, I'll draw a shirt then I'll write it in the language im learning
    - i take posted notes and i write down words of everyday objects in my house then i put them on that object so i can attach the word with the object
    - taking notes in school, if im taking notes for a class and i know a word that's in my notes, instead of writing it down in my native tongue ill write in the language i learning
    - when i set my alarm ill put the reminder on it as 1 or 2 vocab words so when i wake up i can look at it and while i getting ready i can recite those words in my head

My favorite way to learn a new language at home is to find a friend who speaks the language you're trying to learn. Having someone you trust to have a foreign conversation with, even if you're terrible at it, really helps. It's nice to be in a judge free zone :)

Few people know about a pragmatic, efficient way to learn a new language. Those who do, advance in learning steadily and according to their schedule. While most people find themselves learning a new language as a necessity, many others do it because it is fun. It feels more sophisticated to know more than one language. It can be highly beneficial in your life over the long run. However, it is not an easy task to learn a new language no matter whether it is for fun or out of necessity. You've probably seen friends or acquaintances talk about wanting to learn a foreign language, then enthusiastically purchasing products, books, and maybe even enrolling into a course or program, only to ultimately see the reality of the fact that they have failed in their pursuit of learning another language. According to The Guardian, the ICM survey, which questioned 1,001 young people aged 14-24 from across the UK in June this year, paints a picture of a generation perhaps surprisingly open to the prospect of language learning, but often deeply lacking in the confidence of their ability to put their language studies into practice. Three in ten who chose not to study a language at GCSE or A-level say language learning is challenging, with almost half of all those questioned regarding grammar as difficult to learn and 40% seeing memorizing vocabulary as hard work. The research had indicated that A-level languages are perceived as being harder than other subjects and their content is demotivating. Sitting down with a language textbook and trying to teach yourself a new language is not only boring, it takes an inordinate amount of time. It can take months to capture the basics of a particular language. Fluency comes far later. Often, we don’t have the luxury of spending months learning a language. For example, those people who are migrating or taking up a job abroad.
However as an individual learner or with a tutor, the student can cut down the time it takes him/her to master the basics of a new language. There are methods that can be used to reduce the time it takes.
Main Essentials of Learning a New Language - They distinguish three main essentials associated with learning a new language; namely the vocabulary, basic sentence elements / patterns, and grammar rules. Vocabulary - the most basic step towards learning a new language is to learn its words. Familiarity with the words will lead you to form sentences. Sentence Patterns and Elements - this has to do with how you ask and answer questions. Making coherent sentences is the way to make someone understand what you are saying. The ability will also help you understand what others are saying and how you might respond. Grammar Rules - Each language has certain rules that need to be followed.
There is a special type of media developed for the first and second component - a bilingual graded book. Bilingual graded books are also called bilingual graded readers. They offer a parallel translation that allows the user to learn a new language in less time. With the translation on the same page, learners can effortlessly learn what any unfamiliar words mean. They can quickly pick up new vocabulary and phrases that are used over and over in texts of bilingual graded books. When they read a graded bilingual reader, they can pick up chunks of language and vocabulary that they can use in conversation and other real-world applications. It also significantly reduces the amount of time it takes to become conversational in a new language. As you read a bilingual reader, your brain begins to remember words and phrases simply because you are exposed to them several times. You don’t even realize, until you have to recall what you’ve learned, that you have already learned the new words and phrases. Listen to the audio tracks that should always accompany a bilingual graded book to learn how words are said and to improve your overall ability to speak the new language. A good idea is to use the free VLC media player to control the playing speed. You can control the playing speed by decreasing or increasing the speed value on the button of the VLC media player's interface.
Decide what is better for you a paper book or an e-book. Many of the e-readers by Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Kobo have dictionaries pre-loaded on their devices, with options to download additional ones, for free. If you do not have an e-reader, you do not have to buy one, because you can download it as a free app to your phone and use it right away. Writing your own notes, searching or making highlights is ridiculously simple with an e-reader or e-reading app. Anything you do with an e-book is also synced to the cloud, ensuring any change will follow you, no matter what device you are on.
At first search on Google for "bilingual graded books" or "bilingual graded books for beginners". Choose and buy a book on a suitable topic, for example general, business, medical, culinary, dialogues, students, cooking, family, tourists, detective, short story or whatever you like. Read it for about twenty minutes a day. If you do it every day, you will be surprised how much you can learn in a month's time. Try to use the target language after you have learned for a month. If you don't have an opportunity to talk to native speakers at home or at work/study, use your target language in small talk on Skype or another online chat. Search on Google for "free online clean chat rooms" and pick up the one that suits your interests. Two or three minutes of small talk two or three times a week or more often will give you some motivation and encourage you to learn new questions and answers for new dialogues. Compile a list of questions and answers for your dialogues in a target language or find them on Google with keywords "Bilingual graded books dialogues" and try using them.
Don't be afraid of making errors. They are your steps to success. You will spot and correct them sooner or later anyway. They will not be for the rest of your life. Better not to talk at all than to talk incorrectly? Wrong! Start talking as much as you can! Your language will improve every time you talk. A learner who knows only a hundred words and isn't shy of talking will progress more quickly than the one who knows a thousand words but remains silent because he or she is afraid of saying something wrong.
It can usually take you from one to three months to finish a bilingual graded reader at beginner level (A1) and elementary level (A2). The amount of time depends on your previous experience with learning foreign languages and on your personal abilities. At this point you should be able to ask and answer simple questions with the following questioning words: What? Who? Where? When? Which? How many/much? As you improve and become more confident in your ability to use the new language, you can move on to the next reader level and continue your language-learning journey. After using a bilingual graded book for a week or two you are ready to study grammar rules, so buy a good grammar book. A grammar book will satisfy your curiosity about grammar rules awakened by the bilingual graded book. Read the grammar book to find out how you can use your target language more precisely. Follow this order - first read a reading book, then use a grammar book and exercises to make your learning experience uninterrupted.
Language text with a parallel translation has helped many to uncover their potential for learning multiple languages. Whether you are learning a language as a hobby or for a necessary purpose, you will find such books are supportive. Using them is by far more pragmatic, efficient way to learn a new language than a "learn a language in two weeks" program. However you should frequently use the target language by using bilingual graded books with audio tracks, grammar books, chats, internet pages and even songs to maintain your motivation and progress. Remember - twenty minutes a day does the magic!
