  • So many of us are feeling the financial pinch at the moment and, if we can get away at all, it needs to be done on a budget. Enter the city of Amiens in Northern France. It's easy to reach by Eurostar (less than a hundred miles from both Paris and Lille) and is SOOOOOOO much cheaper to stay in than Paris. Everything is cheaper - hotels, restaurants, tourist activities - and it's quieter and smaller than Paris, making it much easier to navigate than the capital and much less frenetic. It's also a wonderfully walkable city and is perfect for a weekend break. This video shows you the best hotels to stay in in Amiens for under £100 / $100 a night and what to see and do while your there. Hotels include the Ibis Styles (which is where I stayed), the Ibis Budget, the Moxy and le Prieure. What to see and do includes the Notre Dame Cathedral of Amiens, the markets (you can buy some amazing saucissions and French cheeses), the canals and 'hortillonnages' (floating island gardens), Jules Verne the French author's house, and, most importantly, the MACARONS. Amiens is famous for its own macarons, a recipe which was made by Jean Trogneux 150 years ago. The Trogneux cafe and shop still remains and is run by the 6th generation of the Trogneux cafe. Incidentally, Brigitte Macron (the wife of Emmanuel Macron and the First Lady of France) was born a Trogneux!!! I really fell in love with Amiens - I hope you do too.
Getting there - take the Eurostar train from London to either Paris or Lille and from there get a local French SNCF train to Amiens - journey time from Lille or Paris is roughly 90 minutes: www.sncf.com/en/booking-itine...

I used to love those markets when we visited France . I remember a cheese called Morbier , one of my favourites , but unavailable here in Australia . Thanks Jo , you bought back some happy memories .

So happy to have brought back some happy memories for you David. I LOVE those markets too. Funny story: when I was a little girl my parents gave me some pocket money to spend at a French market in Boulogne and I only went and bought a fluffy live chick! I remember my mum rushing me and the chick back to the stall when she realized what I'd done! They took the chick back...if I'd have had a fridge in my bedroom in Amiens I'd have bought TONS of that cheese to bring back home with me. Will check out Morbier...

Cool as in cold or cool as in funky?! It was actually a bit of both! Autumn arrived with a fanfare and way too early for my liking in both the UK and Europe....stay well and speak soon. Happy Traveling to you too!!! XXX

I'm so sorry - I hope you're having a better time in London. Amiens is quite small, so I understand it might be tough to find employment there, however beautiful it is!!
