I'm a Brit who moved to Lyon from the UK 20 years ago. I love it. It's just the right size - has a great mix of big-city buzz and almost village-like squares. Fantastic transport system for getting around. I enjoyed the overhead panoramic shots but there's so much more to the city - a walking tour is a great way to see it and there's a "hop on, hop off' tourist bus that allows you to alight anywhere that catches your eye, then continue on your way on the next bus. For the traveller from Paris, and that city’s rather monochrome palette of grey to greyer (with splashes of very intermittent colour to relieve the gloom, for Paris knows that it’s a resolutely northern place, and its buildings reflect those often cloudy skies), the first thing that strikes you about Lyon, 250 miles to the south, are the warm colours. Someone described the city’s overall appearance as like a crate of peaches ripening in the sun and this captures it nicely, as the red roofs and sun-bleached, fading stone more than hint of Le Midi, a hop-skip-and-jump down the Rhone Valley (Vienne? Valence? Montelimar?) It’s no accident that Lyon is almost exactly on the same latitude as Milan and Venice, as there is more than a hint of the Italianate in the ochre walls. Lyon is a lovely open city, with significant elevation on one side - reminiscent of Grenoble - looking east over the rivers divided by Presque Ile, across the rest of town. The most charming bit is the oldest bit, as is always the case in most French (and other countries’) cities. I almost gave myself a double hernia trying to romp up Fourviere Hill, but the pain soon eased when I clocked the majestic views from atop. There are also significant Roman ruins up here that are more extensive than I’d expected; a couple of theatres and other sundry bits and bobs. Least said about the Basilica (a sort of Romanesque/Byzantine mess of a mash-up) itself, the better. The reason to be up here are the views. The best church in Lyon is the main cathedral just down the hill. The rest of the time is best spent just aimlessly wandering. The old working-class district of La Croix-Rousse, is a (slightly gentrified) throwback to Lyon’s industrial past; a kind of self-contained village within the city. Place Bellecour, the city’s main square is a big, pompous, unwieldy thing and resembles nothing so much as a military parade ground. You can imagine Napoleon rallying his troops here on his way back from exile, (even if he never did.) But minor quibbles aside, Lyon can easily cope with 3 days of your life. I still can’t quite decide if its ‘northern’ or ‘southern’, though; I have always personally marked the start of Le Midi on this side of France at Montelimar, but on a midsummer’s day in Lyon, with the cicadas’ electric buzzing filling the air: this could well be the ‘true’ south. I just discovered your channel, I'm French but I've been living abroad for 10 years, a bit like you. Your love for French culture and indulgence for all our flaws warms my heart. And Lyon is my hometown, sooooooooo underrated. Thank you!
This is so sweet to see your discovery of Lyon ! I'm so used to live there that I'm forgetting how beautiful it is and how great it is to discover for the first time ! If you ever happen to come back, I recommend a walk in the parc de la Tête D'or and a stroll on the Boulevard des Belges : the park is huge and there is a free zoo inside (which is quite unqiue I think), and the Boulevard is full of incredible typical XIXth and XXth centuries gigantic houses. If you are not affraid of walking into stairs and straight slopes, I recommend the park du Rosaire coming up or down from Fourvière it offers a beautiful sight of the town and is full of flowers and trees. Going down from Fourvière you can also spend some time in the parc des Curiosités, one of the most beautiful sights of Lyon, it's near the Saint Just metro station and is truly breathtaking (its a sweet spot for a romantic picnic and there is a boulangerie right around the corner !" I recommend a walk along la Saone river, from Bellecour to Confluence, you'll cross all the history of Lyon, from old to new in architecture and sights. Following the river, you encounter péniche boats, and a beautiful sight on the hills. Arriving to the Confluence very modern district, you can walk to the museum (if you like natural sciences, it's an amazing museum) and go the the actual place called "la confluence", which is where the two rivers meet (very beautiful around sunset). All those places require a lot of walking, but it's the best way to discover Lyon. To finish, if you'd like to stay in Lyon, I recommend the 8eme arrondissemnt, also called Monplaisir (such a lovely name !), home to the Lumière brothers and birthplace of the cinema. The neighbourhood is very quiet and pleasant, with a central street full of nice shops, restaurants, bars and cafés, parks and the Lumière Museum and cinema (where you can see old moves everyday). And that's all ! I just love my town and love to share about it ! Cheers !

Hi, juste a little erratum at 12:00, it's not Croix Rousse but place des Terreaux (which is a the bottom of Croix Rousse but not in, it was an arsenal before). And if you want a real bouchon we basically never go at vieux Lyon for them as they are basically tourists traps (not the worst of them but still a little bit ^^). If you come back and another time try to go to "la meunière" in Lyon 1 (modernized bouchon) or "le garret" (not the look of a bouchon but the real food and quantity of one) close to the opera. Also take a guide to visit the "traboules". And if you want a global vue of Lyon and the surroudings, try to go to the mont Thou. It's a nice area for a bit of (soft) hiking.
It is so wonderful to see France through your eyes and experiences. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your life with us/me. You are truly an amazing family.
We were in Lyon last week and stayed at the Hotel Bayard Bellecour. I thought of you as I know how much you love romantic places. This is the most beautiful and romantic hotel I have ever seen. You have got to go back and experience it and add it to your recommendations for Lyon!
Lyon is my favorite city in France. Two restaurants to recommend, besides Cafe Comptoir Abel, would be Cafe Terroir, my favorite, and La Maison Marie. I always stay at Hotel de Celestins, a very small, 3-star hotel and close to the theatre, but roomy, clean, close to everything, and inexpensive. While your video was fun (and all of them are very informative), there's so much more to Lyon than just the food. You should plan at least 3 days (preferably 4) in the city and then more days for wine tours originating from Lyon for Cote du Rhone, Beaujolais, and Burgundy.
We were in Lyon this past May and LOVED it! It was definitely a gastronomical wonderland. Vieux Lyon is the place to be. I got gorgeous silk and Jacquard scarves, praline Brioche, crepes made right before our eyes. Wonderful
I went to Lyon when I was younger with school, didn’t appreciate it then but am definitely going to go back after watching your video! Love your videos, so informative! 🇫🇷🏴
So glad to see you enjoying and sharing your visit to Lyon. I only discovered Lyon in 2015 and immediately fell in love. It reminds me of Paris when I lived there 50+ years ago - not so crowded with tourists. I spent 5 days in Lyon on my trip to France last fall. But I had gotten a cold a few days before, and all during my time there I HAD NO APPETITE! All those wonderful food options, and I could barely force myself to eat. 😢
I’ve just spend the past week in Paris. I ate at a lot of the places you reviewed on the channel. My personal favorite was “Breizh Cafe”. ALSO, when I left Paris for my next travel destination… I saw you guys at the train station. I really wanted to come say hi, but it was nice just to see you. 😁
Another amazing thing about Lyon are the Roman theatres sitting above the Old City. Stumbled across them in my '48 hours in Lyon' and couldn't believe how well preserved they are.
Another fantastic video! I didn't know that Lyon was the gastronomic center of France. You've just shown me another place that I have to visit. Bon Voyage a tous!
We visited Lyon in 2017 and really loved it. We definitely have it on our list to visit again. I know you mainly visited for the gastronomy, but with our kids we really enjoyed the Musée Cinéma et Miniature.
Thank you both so kindly for highlighting Lyon, my most anticipated and long-awaited vlog that I requested of you several months ago. ❤ I savored the flavors vicariously, as it appears that Lyon is indeed a worthy destination for us Foodies and if not better than Paris, it is at least very comparable. What say you?
I visited Lyon for the first time in September 2022. The city is beautiful and clean and the people were very nice. One of the highlights was visiting Les Halles de Paul Bocuse. I had an amazing lunch at a little restaurant inside Les Halles. I highly recommend!
Yay! I’m excited for videos like this. I adore Paris and so enjoy your videos but it’s really cool to get to see other regions as well. And so fun that it included a visit from your daughter! It makes it extra special. I love making macarons and now need to add taking a class at Richart to my France to do list.
I enjoyed the expressions on your faces while you were savoring the food. I always feel loved when I eat French food, as if they cared about me so much, they performed their culinary skills to the best of their ability, every time! It's just wonderful. ❤️❤️❤️🍷⚜️
The fine arts museum (Musée des Beaux Arts) and the roman art museum (Lugdunum) are must see in Lyon. The natural history museum (Confluence) and the cinema museum (Lumières brothers house and factory) are interesting too.
Hi! Have you been to the Alps at all? I’m visiting Chamonix & other places nearby this fall & possibly want to take on the Tour du Mont Blanc next year! Would love your pov! 🥰🥰🥰
I’ve not yet been to Lyon, but I most certainly will go! All that food looked so amazing. I keep thinking of the bone marrow, or as I like to call it, God’s butter 💃🏽🥰
This was a great gastronomic introductory video of Lyon. Please go back and spend at least a month there showing us all “foodie” things and especially Lê Halles in detail!! Thanks guys.
I visited Lyon for the first time this past March. I was there to record a CD on the organ in St Bonaventure church, which I believe I see in the background in your opening outdoor meal scene! I stayed in a hotel three blocks from the church, so was in the heart of downtown restaurants and shopping. Unfortunately, I was so busy with my recording project that I didn't have time to explore Lyon as it deserves. But I loved being there: so much mellower than Paris, so user-friendly, and plenty of things of real interest. I definitely want to return! My schedule was so strange, what with my having to record in the middle of the night, compounded by jet lag, that I had trouble getting to restaurants during their normal opening hours. But there was one nearby, very old-school, that stayed more constantly open, so I ate there three times. I had some really interesting, original plates there, including a fish with a unique orange-creme sauce.
Thanks for the wonderful video! I was in Lyon for 3 days in summer 2017. I love the city for its combination of the old town and the new town, and a river running cross the city. This reminds me of Shanghai where I am from. Looking forward to more your visit to Southern France. BTW, I miss Marseille so much!
There are 2 rivers, the Rhône and the Saône and we even say a third river: The Beaujolais because it flows down our throats. This year with all the heat we've had will be great year. Don't forget "only drink it in moderation" as we say in France.
Hi Frenchies! Nice to see that you are expanding to other cities. I just returned from France. I followed some of your recommendations for Paris. Food was great. We then went to Bordeaux and also explored the Provence region.
This video about Lyon came as a pleasant surprise as I have never been to that city, I am really looking forward to visiting it the next time that I stay in Paris. The visit to the RICHART macaron factory was both informative and amusing. However, the most outstanding aspect of the video is that you always transmit your joy when eating and drinking, nothing to do with many other picky gastronomic vloggers around.
Another great video! Thank you! I would definitely do a 4 hour round trip for Ravioles au foie gras, and since Antoine played air piano after tasting the rillettes de canard, I may have to stick around for that too!
Would that information be included in your Travel Guide which I bought just last week, is it updated with your new travel? Deciding right now between Lyon and Dijon as a stop for a couple of days on the way to Paris from Antibes by car, and thought that Lyon is too hilly for us but you make everything so attractive that now I think that maybe Lyon is a winner!🤷♂️

OMG You were killing me with the food! I am dead. I was drooling. I had to pause and take a break. The food. I am dead. Dead. Dead. Every time you took a bite I was craning my neck and opening my mouth.
One of my favorite memories of my stay in Thiviers was visiting the farm store for the farm in Brantome en Perigord that made the duck rillettes, foie gras and cans of duck confit. I was not a fan of duck until then and now I love it. I miss all the fresh food that you get in France.

I wanted to ask about the state of Paris right now. My family and I will be traveling there soon and we’ve been hearing news about riots. Is it still safe? What is your advice? Again, thank you so much! 😊

But where oh, where, are the shutters?!

I love Paris but thank you for showing us how much more there is to see, do and eat in France.
Merci pour cette passionnante visite de Lyon, j'imaginais pas que c'était aussi vaste !
@@LesFrenchiesTravel I had no idea..
This is great - I was hoping you would make a video showing a trip to Lyon!
Love this! I am going to Lyon tomorrow!!
Hi! Have you been to the Alps at all? I’m visiting Chamonix & other places nearby this fall & possibly want to take on the Tour du Mont Blanc next year! Would love your pov! 🥰🥰🥰
@@LesFrenchiesTravel Thank you so much!! Putting on your bucket list video right now :)
Love your content. So informative, well-shot, respectful and applicable to regular people like me. Thank you fr Singapore
You are now officially certified macaron experts. Great going Lyon!!!!
Challenge accepted!
@@LesFrenchiesTravel Yeah!! 🥰👏👏
Magnifique et grand themè du debut de week end et dimanche pour la matin
Another great video! Lyon looks amazing!
We can’t find any reference to the Macaron baking tour you did. Do you have the details to share ?
You two are my favorite channel right now just remember to share the burger LOL!
Perfect timing. I will be in Lyon later this year. Looking forward to visiting
Hi Frenchies! Nice to see that you are expanding to other cities. I just returned from France. I followed some of your recommendations for Paris. Food was great. We then went to Bordeaux and also explored the Provence region.
Hi, didn't you try (in Lyon) their slightly warm Potatoes salad with Saucisson à la pistache ? ! - that is yumy too , "un régal " !
@@LesFrenchiesTravel Yeap !
That sounds wonderful!
That room is claustrophobic.
Another great video! Thank you! I would definitely do a 4 hour round trip for Ravioles au foie gras, and since Antoine played air piano after tasting the rillettes de canard, I may have to stick around for that too!
Wonderful and wonderful ❤
I will visit France again due to you both.
😍
Cannot wait to explore Lyon & Bordeaux next year! Perfect combination! 🩷❤️🩷
PS please do an episode of Bordeaux as well 😊
I love the little marzipan figurines! They must be tasty.
Love this!!! ❤ how do you book the macaron class?!
Beautiful city, amazing video!
Thank you so much for your hotel advice in Paris. I had a fabulous stay.
My favourite is when you’re dining in many, many different dining experiences ❤
Would that information be included in your Travel Guide which I bought just last week, is it updated with your new travel?
Deciding right now between Lyon and Dijon as a stop for a couple of days on the way to Paris from Antibes by car, and thought that Lyon is too hilly for us but you make everything so attractive that now I think that maybe Lyon is a winner!🤷♂️
Glad to see you enjoyed our city! Come back soon!
We will!

Great Food video guys!
OMG You were killing me with the food! I am dead. I was drooling. I had to pause and take a break. The food. I am dead. Dead. Dead. Every time you took a bite I was craning my neck and opening my mouth.
come and try ;)
One of my favorite memories of my stay in Thiviers was visiting the farm store for the farm in Brantome en Perigord that made the duck rillettes, foie gras and cans of duck confit. I was not a fan of duck until then and now I love it. I miss all the fresh food that you get in France.
Aaah Lyons - the Bistro capital of France. 25yrs ago I had plans to go from England to work and learn in the Bistrots there but I did something very silly - I fell in love, what an idiot!
Great post, guys 👍.
I really enjoy your channel!!!❤🎉
I loved it when Colleen lost the tool in the meringue and started giggling.
You guys are living the life! ❤
Hello from Washington State! Firstly I want to say a huge thank you for all of your wonderful videos! They are all so informational and delightful entertaining. I wanted to ask about the state of Paris right now. My family and I will be traveling there soon and we’ve been hearing news about riots. Is it still safe? What is your advice? Again, thank you so much! 😊
Hi from Lyon! Well thank you for all the good things you’re telling about my city 🥰. Lyon is also known for its lights. Monuments, universities… are all light up wonderfully at night.
I love m’y city and for sure 2 days isn’t enough 😄
Have a nice Sunday!! 😘
PS: don’t ask for a “bouillon” in Lyon… we don’t know what it is… -concerning a type of restaurant of course 😁-
