I'm a Brit who moved to Lyon from the UK 20 years ago. I love it. It's just the right size - has a great mix of big-city buzz and almost village-like squares. Fantastic transport system for getting around. I enjoyed the overhead panoramic shots but there's so much more to the city - a walking tour is a great way to see it and there's a "hop on, hop off' tourist bus that allows you to alight anywhere that catches your eye, then continue on your way on the next bus. Really, 48 hours isn't long enough! :)
Wow what appetites! I am English and with my French wife have lived in Lyon for 50 years. Could never return to London and Kent after having lived a marvelous life here. ❤ Ah, just another sip of Beaujolais. This year 2023 is going to be a great one. Thank you for making such a great film too.
What would Saturday morning be without a second cup of coffee and watching Les Frenchies? Superb tour of Lyon and loved every minute of it! Thanks so much and stay cool -- it is heating up here in NYC -- and can see it is the same in Lyon!
For the traveller from Paris, and that city’s rather monochrome palette of grey to greyer (with splashes of very intermittent colour to relieve the gloom, for Paris knows that it’s a resolutely northern place, and its buildings reflect those often cloudy skies), the first thing that strikes you about Lyon, 250 miles to the south, are the warm colours. Someone described the city’s overall appearance as like a crate of peaches ripening in the sun and this captures it nicely, as the red roofs and sun-bleached, fading stone more than hint of Le Midi, a hop-skip-and-jump down the Rhone Valley (Vienne? Valence? Montelimar?) It’s no accident that Lyon is almost exactly on the same latitude as Milan and Venice, as there is more than a hint of the Italianate in the ochre walls. Lyon is a lovely open city, with significant elevation on one side - reminiscent of Grenoble - looking east over the rivers divided by Presque Ile, across the rest of town. The most charming bit is the oldest bit, as is always the case in most French (and other countries’) cities. I almost gave myself a double hernia trying to romp up Fourviere Hill, but the pain soon eased when I clocked the majestic views from atop. There are also significant Roman ruins up here that are more extensive than I’d expected; a couple of theatres and other sundry bits and bobs. Least said about the Basilica (a sort of Romanesque/Byzantine mess of a mash-up) itself, the better. The reason to be up here are the views. The best church in Lyon is the main cathedral just down the hill. The rest of the time is best spent just aimlessly wandering. The old working-class district of La Croix-Rousse, is a (slightly gentrified) throwback to Lyon’s industrial past; a kind of self-contained village within the city. Place Bellecour, the city’s main square is a big, pompous, unwieldy thing and resembles nothing so much as a military parade ground. You can imagine Napoleon rallying his troops here on his way back from exile, (even if he never did.) But minor quibbles aside, Lyon can easily cope with 3 days of your life. I still can’t quite decide if its ‘northern’ or ‘southern’, though; I have always personally marked the start of Le Midi on this side of France at Montelimar, but on a midsummer’s day in Lyon, with the cicadas’ electric buzzing filling the air: this could well be the ‘true’ south. But where oh, where, are the shutters?!
@@annysavoye3872 👍Thanks for that! I noticed that it’s a similar situation in Grenoble, too! Personally, I much prefer French houses avec shutters! Merci for your information.
We were in Lyon last week and stayed at the Hotel Bayard Bellecour. I thought of you as I know how much you love romantic places. This is the most beautiful and romantic hotel I have ever seen. You have got to go back and experience it and add it to your recommendations for Lyon!
I just discovered your channel, I'm French but I've been living abroad for 10 years, a bit like you. Your love for French culture and indulgence for all our flaws warms my heart. And Lyon is my hometown, sooooooooo underrated. Thank you!
And just like that our Saturday treat is here! ☺️ Lyon is definitely has been on our list and you just confirmed our wish to travel there! 🙌🏻 Happy weekend Colleen and Antoine! Was great to “meet” your daughter!
I have honestly been waiting to see you do things outside of Paris - especially cities like Lyon, where I'll be visiting later this summer. Thanks for this, and enjoy your travels!
Great to see Lyon. I have a French friend who told me it's a lot like Paris but better! The explanation is that it is smaller yet charming. Thanks as always!
We were in Lyon this past May and LOVED it! It was definitely a gastronomical wonderland. Vieux Lyon is the place to be. I got gorgeous silk and Jacquard scarves, praline Brioche, crepes made right before our eyes. Wonderful
My boyfriend and I are going to Lyon over New Years. We have never been to Lyon, this video is just what we needed.Thank you, thank you so much for doing this one.
Bonjour....it was great as usual. Lyon is a special treat !!! Can't wait until the next video...Please be careful with all the unrest going on specially in Paris !!!
It is so wonderful to see France through your eyes and experiences. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your life with us/me. You are truly an amazing family.
Another amazing thing about Lyon are the Roman theatres sitting above the Old City. Stumbled across them in my '48 hours in Lyon' and couldn't believe how well preserved they are.
@andrewmcgaillard8987 si vous aimez les vestiges Romains allez à Vienne à 38kms au sud de Lyon. Mosaïques et nombreux vestiges Romains de l autre côté du pont à St Romain en Gall( où se dresse la Tour des Valois).
Thank you both so kindly for highlighting Lyon, my most anticipated and long-awaited vlog that I requested of you several months ago. ❤ I savored the flavors vicariously, as it appears that Lyon is indeed a worthy destination for us Foodies and if not better than Paris, it is at least very comparable. What say you?
I went to Lyon when I was younger with school, didn’t appreciate it then but am definitely going to go back after watching your video! Love your videos, so informative! 🇫🇷🏴
Lyon is my favorite city in France. Two restaurants to recommend, besides Cafe Comptoir Abel, would be Cafe Terroir, my favorite, and La Maison Marie. I always stay at Hotel de Celestins, a very small, 3-star hotel and close to the theatre, but roomy, clean, close to everything, and inexpensive. While your video was fun (and all of them are very informative), there's so much more to Lyon than just the food. You should plan at least 3 days (preferably 4) in the city and then more days for wine tours originating from Lyon for Cote du Rhone, Beaujolais, and Burgundy.
I’ve just spend the past week in Paris. I ate at a lot of the places you reviewed on the channel. My personal favorite was “Breizh Cafe”. ALSO, when I left Paris for my next travel destination… I saw you guys at the train station. I really wanted to come say hi, but it was nice just to see you. 😁
So glad to see you enjoying and sharing your visit to Lyon. I only discovered Lyon in 2015 and immediately fell in love. It reminds me of Paris when I lived there 50+ years ago - not so crowded with tourists. I spent 5 days in Lyon on my trip to France last fall. But I had gotten a cold a few days before, and all during my time there I HAD NO APPETITE! All those wonderful food options, and I could barely force myself to eat. 😢
We visited Lyon in 2017 and really loved it. We definitely have it on our list to visit again. I know you mainly visited for the gastronomy, but with our kids we really enjoyed the Musée Cinéma et Miniature.
Yay! I’m excited for videos like this. I adore Paris and so enjoy your videos but it’s really cool to get to see other regions as well. And so fun that it included a visit from your daughter! It makes it extra special. I love making macarons and now need to add taking a class at Richart to my France to do list.
This video about Lyon came as a pleasant surprise as I have never been to that city, I am really looking forward to visiting it the next time that I stay in Paris. The visit to the RICHART macaron factory was both informative and amusing. However, the most outstanding aspect of the video is that you always transmit your joy when eating and drinking, nothing to do with many other picky gastronomic vloggers around.
Another fantastic video! I didn't know that Lyon was the gastronomic center of France. You've just shown me another place that I have to visit. Bon Voyage a tous!
I enjoyed the expressions on your faces while you were savoring the food. I always feel loved when I eat French food, as if they cared about me so much, they performed their culinary skills to the best of their ability, every time! It's just wonderful. ❤️❤️❤️🍷⚜️
This is so sweet to see your discovery of Lyon ! I'm so used to live there that I'm forgetting how beautiful it is and how great it is to discover for the first time ! If you ever happen to come back, I recommend a walk in the parc de la Tête D'or and a stroll on the Boulevard des Belges : the park is huge and there is a free zoo inside (which is quite unqiue I think), and the Boulevard is full of incredible typical XIXth and XXth centuries gigantic houses. If you are not affraid of walking into stairs and straight slopes, I recommend the park du Rosaire coming up or down from Fourvière it offers a beautiful sight of the town and is full of flowers and trees. Going down from Fourvière you can also spend some time in the parc des Curiosités, one of the most beautiful sights of Lyon, it's near the Saint Just metro station and is truly breathtaking (its a sweet spot for a romantic picnic and there is a boulangerie right around the corner !" I recommend a walk along la Saone river, from Bellecour to Confluence, you'll cross all the history of Lyon, from old to new in architecture and sights. Following the river, you encounter péniche boats, and a beautiful sight on the hills. Arriving to the Confluence very modern district, you can walk to the museum (if you like natural sciences, it's an amazing museum) and go the the actual place called "la confluence", which is where the two rivers meet (very beautiful around sunset). All those places require a lot of walking, but it's the best way to discover Lyon. To finish, if you'd like to stay in Lyon, I recommend the 8eme arrondissemnt, also called Monplaisir (such a lovely name !), home to the Lumière brothers and birthplace of the cinema. The neighbourhood is very quiet and pleasant, with a central street full of nice shops, restaurants, bars and cafés, parks and the Lumière Museum and cinema (where you can see old moves everyday). And that's all ! I just love my town and love to share about it ! Cheers !
I’ve not yet been to Lyon, but I most certainly will go! All that food looked so amazing. I keep thinking of the bone marrow, or as I like to call it, God’s butter 💃🏽🥰
I visited Lyon for the first time this past March. I was there to record a CD on the organ in St Bonaventure church, which I believe I see in the background in your opening outdoor meal scene! I stayed in a hotel three blocks from the church, so was in the heart of downtown restaurants and shopping. Unfortunately, I was so busy with my recording project that I didn't have time to explore Lyon as it deserves. But I loved being there: so much mellower than Paris, so user-friendly, and plenty of things of real interest. I definitely want to return! My schedule was so strange, what with my having to record in the middle of the night, compounded by jet lag, that I had trouble getting to restaurants during their normal opening hours. But there was one nearby, very old-school, that stayed more constantly open, so I ate there three times. I had some really interesting, original plates there, including a fish with a unique orange-creme sauce.
One of my favorite memories of my stay in Thiviers was visiting the farm store for the farm in Brantome en Perigord that made the duck rillettes, foie gras and cans of duck confit. I was not a fan of duck until then and now I love it. I miss all the fresh food that you get in France.
Love this as Lyon is a wonderful, compact & walkable city but with a great metro & tram system which we have visited several times & with history going back to the Romans. The amphitheatre at Fourvière is beautiful & Fête des Lumières each December is utterly stunning. So many places to see 2 days is easily filled. As for food, my last meal with our Lyonaisse friends in December was very "traditionnel" with Salade de Cochonailles (museau, cervelas, pieds de veau, gras double, lentilles) followed by Tablier de Sapeur. Well, when in Rome......okay Roman France anyway. 😀😀 Please go back soon & show people more of a fantastic city. Forgot. We stay at Hotel Vaubecour which is No. #1 rated on TA for Lyon hotels but it's actually a 2* B&B so it's very reasonably priced. Family run & really, really good.
Thanks for the wonderful video! I was in Lyon for 3 days in summer 2017. I love the city for its combination of the old town and the new town, and a river running cross the city. This reminds me of Shanghai where I am from. Looking forward to more your visit to Southern France. BTW, I miss Marseille so much!
There are 2 rivers, the Rhône and the Saône and we even say a third river: The Beaujolais because it flows down our throats. This year with all the heat we've had will be great year. Don't forget "only drink it in moderation" as we say in France.
I really love all your videos, BUT please please please turn down the music. For people with hearing issues, the loud music ruins the video. Otherwise, I love you guys.
Hi! Have you been to the Alps at all? I’m visiting Chamonix & other places nearby this fall & possibly want to take on the Tour du Mont Blanc next year! Would love your pov! 🥰🥰🥰
Hello from Washington State! Firstly I want to say a huge thank you for all of your wonderful videos! They are all so informational and delightful entertaining. I wanted to ask about the state of Paris right now. My family and I will be traveling there soon and we’ve been hearing news about riots. Is it still safe? What is your advice? Again, thank you so much! 😊
Yeah! ❤ enfin ! Lyon Dijon Nice Toulouse Strasbourg Reims Nancy Grenoble Bordeaux Tours Nantes Rennes Limoges Montpellier Toulon Avignon et j'en passe autant de villes où la gastronomie y est incroyable ! Bravo pour cette excursion gastronomique lyonnaise ! 🎉😊
Aaah Lyons - the Bistro capital of France. 25yrs ago I had plans to go from England to work and learn in the Bistrots there but I did something very silly - I fell in love, what an idiot! Great post, guys 👍.
We love Lyon, our favorite restaurant is Café Comptoir Abel, the foie gras appetizers are amazing, with the plats of chicken with mushrooms, crayfish gratin, and Pike dumplings each far exceeded expectations, staff is friendly and helpful and its in a historic fun building. There are a no shortage of hotels in Lyon, le Grand Hôtel Des Terreaux is a 4 star historic in a fantastic location with easy access by walking to almost everything you would want to see, it even has a basement swimming pool, sort of...
Would that information be included in your Travel Guide which I bought just last week, is it updated with your new travel? Deciding right now between Lyon and Dijon as a stop for a couple of days on the way to Paris from Antibes by car, and thought that Lyon is too hilly for us but you make everything so attractive that now I think that maybe Lyon is a winner!🤷♂️
This was a great gastronomic introductory video of Lyon. Please go back and spend at least a month there showing us all “foodie” things and especially Lê Halles in detail!! Thanks guys.
We used to go up to the Beaujolais for weekends and hop down to Lyon. I think it is the only city in France in which I have never had a disappointing meal. The people there take their food so seriously that a sub-par restaurateur has little chance of surviving. I should be pointed out that they are drawing upon major food producing areas nearby, e.g., the Alps, the Massif Central, the Rhône Valley, Beaujolais, Burgundy and Bresse (especially for poultry).
Hi Frenchies! Nice to see that you are expanding to other cities. I just returned from France. I followed some of your recommendations for Paris. Food was great. We then went to Bordeaux and also explored the Provence region.
Hi from Lyon! Well thank you for all the good things you’re telling about my city 🥰. Lyon is also known for its lights. Monuments, universities… are all light up wonderfully at night. I love m’y city and for sure 2 days isn’t enough 😄 Have a nice Sunday!! 😘 PS: don’t ask for a “bouillon” in Lyon… we don’t know what it is… -concerning a type of restaurant of course 😁-
If you go back to Lyon you have to go to the « Food Traboule » the food court in Lyon’s traboule (price is a bit higher, for the view/mood), or go to Delicatessen or Gueuleton restaurants, they are amazing meat cookers ! From a Lyon resident
In Madrid, they are converting a lot of their old mercados to have restaurants, tapas, groceries, etc. They are wonderful, whether I took friends to the more touristy ones or to the neighborhood ones, they are not to be missed.
Thank you for showing lyon it's a great city to visit ,but to live i've been told it's not cheap ,i've been often over the near 30years spent south in valence(1hour for thoses that don't know )and i'm going saturday again with one of my sons, confluence museum is on the agenda this time as i've not been there since covid!! Then the old town before going to the Aussie pub on a barge for a drink or two😂
I had always been led to believe that my family on my father's side originated in Ireland, but I've been doing some genealogy research and through a name found in an old family document, I actually found out that the first ancestor to relocate to the United States was actually born in Lyon, in 1678. He first moved to the UK to escape religious persecution, then after marrying a British lady, move to the US. He died in Virginia in 1717. Since finding him, I've been able to trace his grandfather back to 1610, to my 7th Great-Grandfather. The hunt continues. Oh, as it turns out, he was the Count de Valois.
OMG You were killing me with the food! I am dead. I was drooling. I had to pause and take a break. The food. I am dead. Dead. Dead. Every time you took a bite I was craning my neck and opening my mouth.
Please try making macarons at home. It's such a good way to relax, involve the family or /and friends with the added value that no one really cares how they look but how they tatste. My late Grandmama lived her whole life in Lyon and passed her love of food to me at an early age so I can understand your adventure in Lyon.
Mr.Frenchie, can you comment on the latest unrest in Paris and tourists. We will be first time visitors and wondering if we should even proceed to go there this coming weekend. Thanks!
As Antoine said, don't cancel. I also live in Paris, and absolutely nothing happened in my area neither. The protests are/were very, very territorially limited.
Don’t cancel! I was visiting Paris from the US and you couldn’t tell anything was even going on. The news makes everything 10 times worse than what it is. Not once did we feel unsafe!!!
The fine arts museum (Musée des Beaux Arts) and the roman art museum (Lugdunum) are must see in Lyon. The natural history museum (Confluence) and the cinema museum (Lumières brothers house and factory) are interesting too.

Cheers !
Going there in September…..your video made me so excited……..❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
I’ve not yet been to Lyon, but I most certainly will go! All that food looked so amazing. I keep thinking of the bone marrow, or as I like to call it, God’s butter 💃🏽🥰
Thank u for this absolutely lovely video.
@@LesFrenchiesTravel 😄
You are now officially certified macaron experts. Great going Lyon!!!!
Very good 😮
I have learned many new things about Lyon! Thank you..
My absolute favorite town in France.
Please go back soon & show people more of a fantastic city.
Wonderful and wonderful ❤
I will visit France again due to you both.
😍
Thank you for taking us with you!
I really love all your videos, BUT please please please turn down the music. For people with hearing issues, the loud music ruins the video.
Otherwise, I love you guys.
Magnifique et grand themè du debut de week end et dimanche pour la matin
Magnificient! Thank you all.
thanks for those info, hope can visit Lyon one day~~~
I loved it when Colleen lost the tool in the meringue and started giggling.
Hi! Have you been to the Alps at all? I’m visiting Chamonix & other places nearby this fall & possibly want to take on the Tour du Mont Blanc next year! Would love your pov! 🥰🥰🥰
@@LesFrenchiesTravel Thank you so much!! Putting on your bucket list video right now :)
Love this! I am going to Lyon tomorrow!!
You gave us some great tips & food options in Paris last year, so we were glad to find your Lyon video. We will be there later this year. Thanks,
Hi, didn't you try (in Lyon) their slightly warm Potatoes salad with Saucisson à la pistache ? ! - that is yumy too , "un régal " !
@@LesFrenchiesTravel Yeap !
That sounds wonderful!
Et la Normandie dans tout cela ? Vous-etes près en plus...
Aaah Lyons - the Bistro capital of France. 25yrs ago I had plans to go from England to work and learn in the Bistrots there but I did something very silly - I fell in love, what an idiot!
Great post, guys 👍.
Love your content. So informative, well-shot, respectful and applicable to regular people like me. Thank you fr Singapore
Cannot wait to explore Lyon & Bordeaux next year! Perfect combination! 🩷❤️🩷
PS please do an episode of Bordeaux as well 😊
We love Lyon, our favorite restaurant is Café Comptoir Abel, the foie gras appetizers are amazing, with the plats of chicken with mushrooms, crayfish gratin, and Pike dumplings each far exceeded expectations, staff is friendly and helpful and its in a historic fun building.
There are a no shortage of hotels in Lyon, le Grand Hôtel Des Terreaux is a 4 star historic in a fantastic location with easy access by walking to almost everything you would want to see, it even has a basement swimming pool, sort of...
Agree, Cafe Comptoir Abel is terrific.
My mouth was watering this whole video! 😂 great job guys !
Keep us up to date with things happening in Paris
Big Thanks for information
This was a great gastronomic introductory video of Lyon. Please go back and spend at least a month there showing us all “foodie” things and especially Lê Halles in detail!! Thanks guys.
Challenge accepted!
@@LesFrenchiesTravel Yeah!! 🥰👏👏
Perfect timing. I will be in Lyon later this year. Looking forward to visiting
I felt the same way about the food court. It’s a foodie jewel
You guys are living the best life! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Frenchies! Nice to see that you are expanding to other cities. I just returned from France. I followed some of your recommendations for Paris. Food was great. We then went to Bordeaux and also explored the Provence region.
You guys make another video of the highlights or must visit places in Lyon.
Hi from Lyon! Well thank you for all the good things you’re telling about my city 🥰. Lyon is also known for its lights. Monuments, universities… are all light up wonderfully at night.
I love m’y city and for sure 2 days isn’t enough 😄
Have a nice Sunday!! 😘
PS: don’t ask for a “bouillon” in Lyon… we don’t know what it is… -concerning a type of restaurant of course 😁-
Beautiful town, splendid tour, merci beaucoup for sharing the fun times!
@BadMonkeyTouring à 38kms au sud de Lyon en face de Vienne à St Romain en Galle il y a la tour des VALLOIS. Vous la Voyez de la rive gauche du Rhône.
I love the little marzipan figurines! They must be tasty.
i lived in lyon years ago love it...
Another great video! Lyon looks amazing!
Thank you so much for your hotel advice in Paris. I had a fabulous stay.
OMG You were killing me with the food! I am dead. I was drooling. I had to pause and take a break. The food. I am dead. Dead. Dead. Every time you took a bite I was craning my neck and opening my mouth.
come and try ;)
This is the kind of thing i want to do when traveling!
This is great - I was hoping you would make a video showing a trip to Lyon!
Please try making macarons at home. It's such a good way to relax, involve the family or /and friends with the added value that no one really cares how they look but how they tatste.
My late Grandmama lived her whole life in Lyon and passed her love of food to me at an early age so I can understand your adventure in Lyon.
Food looks sumptuous. Now Lyon is on my list❤️
I’ve only passed through Lyon but it’s definitely to my to do list next time I’m in France .😋☺️
