- How to repair sagging or cracked garage door panels in a quick and efficient way on your own.
Materials & cost:
I paid a total of $56.00 for the Steel Angle Rods, and $5.79 for a new hinge (tax included on both).
If your hinge is in good working condition still, you don't need to buy a new one. Please let me know what you think and if there is anything you'd recommend I do.
Tools:
A basic socket wrench set, pliers, screw gun, and a metal drill bit.

Note: this is a temporary solution to a mild issue, and that is why it works in my case. If your garage door has a more extreme issue, seek out an expert or a garage door specialist near you.
Update 11/17/2023: At the time I did this supplies were low everywhere and costs were super high, but as some of the other comments have mentioned, it's best to use a garage door Garage Door Reinforcement U-Bar Strut Support Brace and they also make garage Door Reinforcement Support Bar Brace Kits specifically for that purpose. Mine is holding up perfectly with the angle bars I installed over 3 years ago, but if your damage is worse than mine, you might want to consider a better option. Good luck, friends!
Update 6/14/2024: This temporary repair held up strong without any issues. We finally saved enough money to replace the entire garage door today. While my temp repair is still holding up, it is finally time to get a door without cracks on the panels. I hope the same for all of you.

Exhoing others’ comments, I just did this fix on my girlfriend’s garage door. It literally took me less than 10 minutes as the holes all lined up perfectly! This saved her the $3,000 it was going to cost for a new door (product & installation) and we cannot thank you enough for posting this DIY fix.

This solution fixed my garage door. Cost me about $70 for the slotted L bars. Once I got home from the hardware store, it took me about 15 minutes to get it done! Thanks for the video!

Definitely helps in a pinch, mine is still perfect as is, I know eventually something more permanent will be necessary, as somebody else mentioned to me in the comments. I just hope it is a ways down the line, so far so good though. Glad it was helpful for you too.
So easy! About $50 at Lowes. About ten minutes to install (I didn't need to drill any new holes). Done. Simple. Inexpensive.

Thanks for this excellent video. I just got through with my repair. I pray it lasts another 25 years, lol. I ended up noticing and replacing 2 cracked hinges as well. You saved me 2 grand and a month long wait for a new door installation.

I installed per the video and it worked like a charm. $95 for hardware and 15 minute install. I may have added 15 lb to the door so I'm not going to rebalance. Thanks for your help.

you should go up in weigh for the springs. my previous springs were 80lbs, with reinforcement probably added 10 lbs so went to the 90lb spring

Great job. My garage door doesn't sound like it's about to fall off every time I open it. I did how ever go with a heavier gauge bar. When I got to the store, the one I was originally going to get felt like it would bend.

Good stuff! Awesome tip on the gauge. I was thinking on getting 1ft 1/2. However you got the 1ft 1/4 angle steel. I have sagging panels with crack as well. I was considering putting JB weld on the cracked panel to bind the crack but may just do what you did.

I think given the right circumstances, this is a very good way to prolong having to replace much more expensive parts, and it has not caused any additional issues either. I will be going to either Lowe's or Home Depot or wherever you got this piece of angle iron and doing the install myself and save me about $1,000 cuz I have the same type of damage to my door as you do the one that you're displaying. Two thumbs up. I am modifying my comment by letting you know that Ace hardware shows they have the 8-ft long slotted l bracket but they didn't have it in stock so I had to get a solid piece of aluminum and it did the same thing

This is a problem I’m having and I had this idea and came online to see if anyone’s done it with success. Thanks for the time making the video. I would only suggest that you extend completely across from end to end to help distribute that force and tension across greater area so it’s less stress to that one area.

Menards here in St Louis sells those 16' garage struts like you have on the top of the garage door for $50.
Nice, 3yrs ago there was something going on where these cost $250 + and they were in short supply. Since that's no longer the case, I would probably recommend that instead.

The 1/4 inch seemed a little light for my big door. I went with the 1/2 inch. Much stronger

@@Nayib1 I fixed my garage door the same way. I had an almost identical crack but the hinge was still intact. It worked like a charm. The only question I have is: will these screws hold? If they give way under the weight, what to do? Use bigger ones?

This is a great example of what we can do to fix our garage door. I have the same problem but I need 4 slotted angels.Maybe it is too heavy.So do you think I can use slotted angel 4ft instead 8ft?Thanks
Hello, this is definitely a temporary solution for a mild issue. The added weight did not make a difference on my door, and I do have a newer motor on there, so that is why this works for me. If you feel that additional weight due to 8' slotted angle bars will jeopardize the structure of your door, I wouldn't bother with 4' slotted angle bars. The reason for that is that each panel is about 4', and if you try to support one end using this method, it will not help, unless your sag is on the center of the panel, as opposed to this example, where the damage is on the hinge side/ one of the ends of the pannel. I often hear about weight issues being added when installing the crossbars, and the spring playing a factor in possibly being replaced to compensate for the weight - did you have to adjust the spring tension or find anything wrong with keeping the same spring installed?
I didn't have to replace/adjust the spring. I think the motor I have is strong enough for a much heavier door, so maybe that plays a factor.
Did you have to adjust the balance on the springs due to the added weight.
Hi, fortunately the added weigh was minimal enough that I did not have to adjust the balance on the springs. If that were the case I'd definitely get a professional to do it though.
You added weight to the door, did you rebalance the door? I actually bought garage door struts (like the one you had on the top, added them (available at Menards, 16’ for about $23, 8’ for $14). I rebalanced the door. This bandaid repair cost me a garage door opener. In 6 months the spring broke and the garage door opener was barely opening the door. I bought a new door & opener. I learned a valuable leasson. If it ain’t broke don’t play with it. If it is broke, in some cases you replace it......this is one of those cases. Jim
I added a very minimum amount of weight, the garage door struts are much heavier. It has been 8 months and the garage door has been working perfectly fine, no issues at all since my repair. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It does definitely add extra weight, if your motor cannot handle the additional weight, I would consult a professional. I had originally brought a professional to give me a quote on repairing the door, he mentioned my equipment could handle much heavier load, but the panels are low quality, so he recommended I add a bar which he would have charged me quite a lot for. After dismissing him due to the information he gave me, I came up with this solution and haven't had any issues since then. I am sure a weaker motor could struggle with the added weight, however, 18 -gauge angle bars are not very heavy. If you plan on adding several more, then definitely consider the load capacity of your garage equipment. Thank you for asking, and good luck with your repair.
The best way to fix that is by adding a metal strut from side to side.
Do you think this would work with one bar only?
It might if you only have minimal damage on one pannel and no sag. I used 2 because I had damage on the top and bottom panel which was causing some sag.

It probably depends on the severity of the damage of your garage. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, seek help from a licensed professional. Mine is still holding strong since I repaired it, prolonging further damage, but I can't speak for everyone's situation.
