Fade to Black - The song is great as a teaching tool because of how accessible it is to beginners as well as how complicated certain parts of it are. It has a great single-note intro, intermediate intro solo and some fantastic chord embellishments. The heavier power chord parts are great to learn basic metal techniques. And finally the end solo is great at showing how a lot of classic blues licks can be used even in metal. A lot of the repeating lines in the solo can be traced back to old blues licks. When i was learning it, I found it also helped with getting my speed alternate picking up to mark. The song is also great for showing students scales other than the Minor Pentatonic. Just my 2 cents but i hope you teach this one!
Also - brilliant lesson - I've Entered Sandman about a fucktillion times and never realised that the open-g at the end of the fill is a nifty way to relax back into the riffage without having to rush (and occasionally fumble) thefollowing F-sharp power chord. I was finishing the fill way up at E on the G-string. No idea why. Thanks for putting me right. xxx
One suggestion. At the start of each video, please tell your audience what effects, if any, you're using and maybe even the settings. The type amp may be helpful also. Not a huge deal on most songs but some (like this one that starts with a kind of "creepy" clean guitar that morphs into a huge distortion) it would be helpful. Maybe you can even wangle some pedal endorsements out of the deal! Thanks!
Woke up one day & wanted to learn how to play an electric guitar. Bought a cheap Jackson & after 4 months of practice I can play this song in its entirety. This motivates me to get actual lessons.
Huge Metallica-fan here! Thanks for the lesson. I already knew the song, but a lesson on the solo would be killer! It also cleared a few things up for me that I've never managed to figure out myself, so that was great! A lesson on Hero of the Day would be awesome!!! :)
So glad you have a broken down version. I just started the grade 2 riff lesson and couldn’t stop playing. I need this in my repertoire. Cannot believe I’m even learning stuff like this. I could only fudge a D chord a year ago…. Amazing playing!
OH MY GOD, I´VE BEEN STRUGGLING TO GET THE RYTHM PART OF THE CLEAN INTRO RIGHT FOR AGES NOW, AND FINALLY I FIND A SOURCE OF INFORMATION THAT ACTUALLY EXPLAINS IT ME, GOD IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME TO FIND SOMETHING LIKE THIS Thank you Justin
can someone tell me why I am looking at 53 people who didn't like the video?? I would say clicking on wrong button as you are great....great teacher thanks so so much xx
I always used the pinky on 7 and index on 5th fret then used the right and middle for the 6-5 on low E string. May be easier for some people and still get the more authentic sound
I found that a different finger placement works quite well for riff 1 - open E, ring finger A string on fret 7, first finger D string fret 5, and then use the middle and first finger for the next 2 notes on the E string. There's a bit of moving around but thought I would share for any others struggling with the other 2 placements :)
I'm quite the beginner, can only play A, D and E choords, but MAN this is one of my favourite songs of all time and I'll learn it till my fingers bleed.
The final note of the riff1 sequence ( the A note ) can be played Hendrix style, with your thumb. Allows for the easiest fingering and avoids having to use the g string.
Hey Justin! I'm a huge fan! I've learned basically all my favorite songs from your videos but now I have a special request! My sister is getting married next summer and she has asked me to pick a song to play at her wedding. The song I want to learn is "If I Should Fall Behind" by Bruce Springsteen! If you would make a video teaching how to play it I would be eternally grateful!
for anyone w might be struggling with the first riff what i like to do is use my first and ring finger and then lift my first finger for the second part. ofcourse that might be hard for some people but i would recommend trying it to see if its any easier for you
Spot on about knowing what riffs to play and when... I've played this live, (bass, drums, guitar and vocal) and coz I was totally freaked when the bass players amp died, I stupidly soldiered on and consequently played it all in the wrong order. The singer gave up, the drummer didn't notice and the crowd went batshit crazy for it - coz well, y'know - SANDMAN! I must have kept playing it (randomly) for about 20mins while the bass was fixed. Best gig ever! xxx
Hey Justin! i love you guitar lessons! they are extremely good and in depth. it would be awesome if you could do a lesson on Champaign Supernova by the oasis. there are not many lessons on this song will be extremely good if you do the lesson! cheers!
Thank u Justin teacher, 14 years ago I was on ur website learning needle and the damage done, mr jones and sitting by the dock of the bay, and switching open chords, now picking back up the guitar again and so ecstatic to find so much more material. Thank u so much for them and I hold great respect for u! You are staying cute as ever ahahahaha! Teacher crush!
Another excellent lesson Justin - you are a fab teacher and have brought my playing on no end. Your lesson on Romeo and Juliet is amazing and I can now play this well. A handshake in thought.
Your vidoes are great. I took a little break. I was an early adopter of the Corona flu. Damn near killed me. How about a little help with Munster's Theme. I'm learning this one from your video.Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown.
i dont know if this is cheap, but for the intro just use the ring finger for 7th fret 5th string, and the index finger on 4th string 5th fret and i also use the index finger for the 5th fret 6th string and switch back.
Great tutorial Justin! Just as I was starting to look around for a beginner Metallica song. This will keep me busy for some time : D. Big fan here, so I'll trust your judgment in which other Metallica song you will do next. Loving your channel and site.

Really great job with singing out the precise rhythms while playing the riffs. Makes life so much easier and I encourage it in everyone. Be well!
I always used the pinky on 7 and index on 5th fret then used the right and middle for the 6-5 on low E string. May be easier for some people and still get the more authentic sound
Why is everyone asking for Justin to teach something else. Be grateful for THIS lesson! Quit bugging him! Have you donated to his site?
