when rashford is on form he can be world class, last season is a great example, after the world cup he was in a different dimension. We wouldnt have came 4th without him. However Rashfords for is absolutely inconsistant. Rooney however was just always on ball. His worst seasons were the best seasons for some of the current united players. But rooney also had arguably the best team in the prem at the time the ball was just easily gifted to him so he could score. Currently every united player looks terrible by comparison and its hard to see if anyone even remotely has an passion what so ever. I think the only one is Hojlund becuase he wants to prove himself, but with players like rashford, anthony and garnacho hogging the ball and not passing to hojlund when they should it just ruins his mentality and makes him look like a bad player.

He did exactly what Pogba did, he put in a great season which got him a new contract on fantastic money. Such a great goal scorer and that's what most people will recall when talking about Wayne, but when you look back at highlights of many of the matches he played in, his crosses, assists, free kicks, interceptions were just phenomenal. He was always everywhere. Loved watching him play., hope as he matures and gains more managerial experience his teams will reap the benefits and he could become one of the greats.

England have a glut of superb players at the minute. Kane, Sterling, Foden, Saka Rice, (who might be the best of all of them). Even Sancho was massively rated at Dortmund. I'm struggling to see how any of those wouldn't walk in to most first elevens at present. Rooney was still better than all of them.
Rooney was great especially as a youngster but seriously people have short memories, the impact that Michael Owen had at World Cup '98 in France just a few years earlier was equally was explosive and that wonder goal against Argentina lives long in the memory.

@patoma847 simple, he was overworked. Watch any interview given to any United player who played with him, and they'll tell you how hard he worked on the pitch and during training. Add to that, he also started early when most players were on the bench/reserve when they were 16.
@patoma847 yeah I think it was a mix of things, he was never going to last at top level in the modern game past 30 due to his lifestyle choices, but he worked so hard off the ball and was so well rounded he could play in deeper positions and made sacrifices to chase back and defend to aid players like Ronaldo and Berbatov who didn't do much defensive work. That work off the ball takes a lot out of the legs.
While everything you guys have mentioned is indeed true and a factor to take into account, I think the main reason Rooney never reached his true full potential was that he was a bit unlucky in that he never got to be a long-term primary goalscorer for United. When that happened two times in 2009/10 and 2011/12 - his scoring and attacking ability were at their highest. Even after two broken metatarsals (which greatly affected his pace) he was still a predator of a striker. The reasons he never got to be the main guy up front were manifold. Sometimes other players like Ronaldo, RVP etc. were outshining him and he had to play in their shade. Few times he fell out with Sir Alex Ferguson. Other times he'd get bad long-term injuries and took a lot of time to regain match-fitness..
As a Man Utd fan, it hurts me to say Wazza underachieved in his career. Yes he won shitloads of trophies. All time scorer for Man Utd and England. But he was finished by 30. Look at CR7. Before his vacation in Saudi, he went back to Man Utd at age 37 and scored 20+ goals. When they were both 21 years old, Wazza was the superior player purely on natural talent. If he had Ronaldo's work ethic and discipline, Wazza would easily break Shearer's EPL goal record.

I guess now excluding the last one, 2004 was the biggest disappointment for me. Should have won that tournament, and got absolutely robbed by the referee vs Portugal. So many people I know think Rooney underperformed in his career... Top United and England scorer... Ever.
