This bird is known for its glossy black plumage with a long, broad-tipped tail. In good lighting, its feathers have an oily greenish sheen. It also has a black mask around its eyes and bill, and its irises are a vibrant turquoise blue that darkens to almost black near the pupil.
The Racket-tailed Treepie is found in Southeast Asia, including southern Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, Sumatra, Java, and Bali. They prefer habitats like scrublands, secondary growth, open fields, gardens, bamboo thickets, and open forests, often near villages.
An arboreal bird, the Racket-tailed Treepie feeds almost exclusively in trees, although it comes down to the ground occasionally to bathe. It moves through the trees with agility, using its remarkable tail for balance. This bird’s diet mainly consists of insects and fruits. It builds a cup-shaped nest in bamboo or thorny shrubs, often surrounded by open grassy areas. The Racket-tailed Treepie typically lays 2 to 4 eggs. The bird’s voice is described as harsh and unattractive.
The Racket-tailed Treepie is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, meaning its population is considered stable.
