This is the best song and performance of Einar Selvik so far imo. Here you can really talk about a true artist and singer. Its so strong and emotional and it makes me feel so alive and conscious about who I am. It makes me think of vikings, the soul of scandinavians in general, my ancestors, and even the whole world, seen through my eyes, blue eyes if you will :) Its like listening to this song I know everything will be fine. Emotional but peaceful at the same time. Wardruna and Einar are the best
This man is a shaman! He is deeply spiritual in a way that very few people are anymore in our time. I get shivers up and down my spine when I listen to this.
Rewatching Vikings - Season 3 Episode 5 and knew immediately it had to be Wardruna. I had listened to "White Raven" today and am so in love with this folk music! 💛
I know only the very basics about Edda or Norse poetry, but Skaldic poetry actually differs from Eddic poetry in style and times of composition. While some Poetic Edda verses contain Skaldic elements, they are often recognized as written at later date. Not that it matters here or anywhere. It's the internet. And I like the sound of my own voice. ps. this is a cool rendition of Völuspa.
I dont think your comment has any meaning here (its informative though), because he means that this person is a skald (old norse word for poet or bard) and not that he is singing skaldic poetry.
Lyrics for this version (norse and english): I did some research, this should be pretty accurate. 1. Hljóðs bið ek allar helgar kindir, meiri ok minni mögu Heimdallar; viltu, at ek, Valföðr! vel framtelja forn spjöll fíra, þau er fremst um man. (1. Hearing I ask | from the holy races, From Heimdall's sons, | both high and low; Thou wilt, Valfather, | that well I relate Old tales I remember | of men long ago.) 57. Sól tér sortna, sígr fold í mar, hverfa af himni heiðar stjörnur; geisar eimi ok aldrnari, leikr hár hiti við himin sjalfan. (57. The sun turns black, | earth sinks in the sea, The hot stars down | from heaven are whirled; Fierce grows the steam | and the life-feeding flame, Till fire leaps high | about heaven itself.) 45. Bræðr munu berjask ok at bönum verðask, munu systrungar sifjum spilla; (45. Brothers shall fight | and fell each other, And sisters' sons | shall kinship stain;) 47. Skelfr Yggdrasils askr standandi, ymr it aldna tré, en jötunn losnar; (47. Yggdrasil shakes, | and shiver on high The ancient limbs, | and the giant is loose;) 58. Geyr nú Garmr mjök fyr Gnipahelli, festr mun slitna en freki renna; (58. Now Garm howls loud | before Gnipahellir, The fetters will burst, | and the wolf run free;) 59. falla forsar, flýgr örn yfir, sá er á fjalli fiska veiðir. (The cataracts fall, | and the eagle flies, And fish he catches | beneath the cliffs. ) 64. Sal sér hon standa sólu fegra, gulli þakðan á Gimléi; þar skulu dyggvar dróttir byggja ok um aldrdaga ynðis njóta. (64. More fair than the sun, | a hall I see, Roofed with gold, | on Gimle it stands; There shall the righteous | rulers dwell, And happiness ever | there shall they have. )
+Justus Dahl 57. Sól tér sortna, sígr fold í mar, hverfa af himni heiðar stjörnur; geisar eimi ok aldrnari, The last word "aldrnari" I'm pretty sure he is not telling that, doesn't sound any similar, but rest fells to be good
+Skyler P. Very well written. Also, not only Gimli but many onther darf names are directly taken from norse poetry or even the Völuspa. There are a couple of stanzas describing the dwarfes and the original meaning of their names, like durin etc etc. :)
Fuck that show! It's just bullshit, and frankly it is a nið. Why not take the actual very rich history instead, of the actual great Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons. Einar rocks though.
Damn Einar Selvik, this was fucking good. 12/12 What he says about Ragnarok is all true. Many believe it is like the christian armageddon, but it's only the birth of a new better world where fields no longer needs sowing. Two people will survive, and from them a whole new and better man kind will emerge. Gods will die. Thor's son Magne will take Thor's hammer and his place etc. Read it!
Oh dear, I have bought my books ages ago. You find Heimskringla, the story from All father walked til Snorri died. Two books heimskringla and the bible, you would always find these two books in any nork home. heimskringla.no got a lot of material, but I'm afraid it's only in original form and other nordic dialects(only anglo missing, as this is also been classified as a scand dialect). I would actually go for buying a translation of the books, like the eddas, heimskringla is online, there is many refs to dif rites etc here, though it's mostly about the Kings from Harald the first til Snorri died. Must reads is are Eigill Skallagrimson saga, Njáls saga, eyrbyggjasaga, landnåms saga, laxdæla saga.. .you'll get hooked. The kvads and dråpas, you must read Hávamál, that's online in anglo. www.pitt.edu/~dash/havamal.html org: www.heimskringla.no/wiki/H%C3%A1vam%C3%A1l one of my favorite dråpas. www.heimskringla.no/wiki/H%C3%A1konarm%C3%A1l The last heathen king and earl, Håkon Lade jarl. I'm amazed that so many people are into this now btw. If you learn icelandic, all the raw material will be there for you. Lot's get lost in translation. Hope I helped some
bluesboydude Magne takes thor's hammer, and his place when he dies. But don't worry about it, it's a long time til Ragnarok, the fimbul winter will come first and that's thousands of years away. Don't you get it? The cycle? Everything freezes, brother kill brother, no food..... Then it starts over again..... It's the iceage as far as I see it. Now who picked up All fathers items? You can find this c'mon
I'm struggling with drugs and isolation, I feel like I'm out of place, a soul less robot, and I'm not alone, our lives are being robbed by technology. This beautiful music heals my rotten soul.
This is actually really good. The lyre is not so much music as it is a support for keeping pace. Very very traditional. I am impressed. This is recreating oral culture. that had a huge need of being able to retell stories. This is what we are hearing. Alien. Yet heritage.
Music reaches the soul of EVERY human being you could be in a small African village and this would touch your soul...Well maybe even more because of African folk music....highly similar in some ways.
When I hear Swedish politicians express the view that Sweden has no heritage, legacy or culture worth saving, It makes me very sad. Can somebody show them this?
Oy! This is norse you damn Sw*de! hehe. Yes, but it's tragic to listen to these traitors. Sven is still there though, not all are subverted, but it's their "media" and extremist elements all through government from top to bottom. Our swede memes were never just memes, now our big brother is a direct threat to him self.
Well, I'm Australian, in Perth, but I keep up with world events. it's old Norse, actually. even the name "Einar" comes from old Norse, from the Norway/Sweden region. even as an outsider, it's sad to see one of Europe's oldest and proudest histories, trampled on, for the sake of political correctness.
choo! It's not ragnarok yet, back to the ocean with you. But yeah they are, we have tried warned you for lit centuries if not moar about the swedish menace, it's not just memes. But it's not the thread for this. Freking Frey must be pissed... freaking midgardsormen knows into youtube now
There is a great tragedy... This man, and Wardruna are making some of the most beautiful and profound music in the history of the world. Yet a huge majority of human beings have never heard of it, nor do they know it exsists. This is tragic and sad.
When I listen to this, it saddens me to know that I can show this to the young, and they'll laugh at this and belittle it. Will not consider it music. Music like this inspires, lifts the spirit, calms the mind, and soothes the soul. Something that music of theirs lacks.
this song is really beautiful. I love putting my headphones on, laying down, closing my eyes, and just playing this. Feels like a good trip, truly magical
Being a good performer and having good performance charisma doesn't necessarily mean that is going to automatically translate to other areas of engagement. Also, it doesn't matter how nervous he gets while speaking. He has a gift to offer the world and he'll get up and go through whatever he must to deliver it.
As a student of history...How can I not love this? My ancestors were Germanic tribesmen from northern Europe who shared a common pantheon with the Germanic vikings. While the Persians were building their first magnificent empire mine were still tribesmen running the lakes and woods to the beat of an ancient hymn all but lost to the civilized Persians and Greeks... Over the generations since then to now in an unbroken line the song has become fainter and fainter and yet I hear echoes of that ancient hymn in this song and I am reminded again of what was and still could be.

A true Skald.
Its almost harvesting season
I know only the very basics about Edda or Norse poetry, but Skaldic poetry actually differs from Eddic poetry in style and times of composition. While some Poetic Edda verses contain Skaldic elements, they are often recognized as written at later date. Not that it matters here or anywhere. It's the internet. And I like the sound of my own voice.
ps. this is a cool rendition of Völuspa.
skåååååååååål!
I dont think your comment has any meaning here (its informative though), because he means that this person is a skald (old norse word for poet or bard) and not that he is singing skaldic poetry.
Alhazred Indeed, the basics
Lyrics for this version (norse and english): I did some research, this should be pretty accurate.
1. Hljóðs bið ek allar helgar kindir,
meiri ok minni mögu Heimdallar;
viltu, at ek, Valföðr! vel framtelja forn spjöll fíra,
þau er fremst um man.
(1. Hearing I ask | from the holy races,
From Heimdall's sons, | both high and low;
Thou wilt, Valfather, | that well I relate
Old tales I remember | of men long ago.)
57. Sól tér sortna, sígr fold í mar,
hverfa af himni heiðar stjörnur;
geisar eimi ok aldrnari,
leikr hár hiti við himin sjalfan.
(57. The sun turns black, | earth sinks in the sea,
The hot stars down | from heaven are whirled;
Fierce grows the steam | and the life-feeding flame,
Till fire leaps high | about heaven itself.)
45. Bræðr munu berjask ok at bönum verðask,
munu systrungar sifjum spilla;
(45. Brothers shall fight | and fell each other,
And sisters' sons | shall kinship stain;)
47. Skelfr Yggdrasils askr standandi,
ymr it aldna tré, en jötunn losnar;
(47. Yggdrasil shakes, | and shiver on high
The ancient limbs, | and the giant is loose;)
58. Geyr nú Garmr mjök fyr Gnipahelli,
festr mun slitna en freki renna;
(58. Now Garm howls loud | before Gnipahellir,
The fetters will burst, | and the wolf run free;)
59. falla forsar, flýgr örn yfir,
sá er á fjalli fiska veiðir.
(The cataracts fall, | and the eagle flies,
And fish he catches | beneath the cliffs. )
64. Sal sér hon standa sólu fegra,
gulli þakðan á Gimléi;
þar skulu dyggvar dróttir byggja
ok um aldrdaga ynðis njóta.
(64. More fair than the sun, | a hall I see,
Roofed with gold, | on Gimle it stands;
There shall the righteous | rulers dwell,
And happiness ever | there shall they have. )
Very nice one of the greatest parts of germanic culture and religion right there
+Blayze Dunbar true that! gotta love them
+Justus Dahl 57. Sól tér sortna, sígr fold í mar,
hverfa af himni heiðar stjörnur;
geisar eimi ok aldrnari,
The last word "aldrnari" I'm pretty sure he is not telling that, doesn't sound any similar, but rest fells to be good
+Justus Dahl "Gimléi" Son of Gloin?
+Skyler P. Very well written. Also, not only Gimli but many onther darf names are directly taken from norse poetry or even the Völuspa. There are a couple of stanzas describing the dwarfes and the original meaning of their names, like durin etc etc. :)
Freaken awesome!!!! Love the show and now I love this guy!
+KevinEssence It's you again Kevin :D
:D
The fuck
:)
Fuck that show! It's just bullshit, and frankly it is a nið.
Why not take the actual very rich history instead, of the actual great Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons.
Einar rocks though.
I got goosebumps everytime I hear this beauty..... I'm in love with Einard....😍😍😍
who isn't
M ern seriously
Every time I hear him live it blows me away!He is extremely gifted!
I can listen to this over and over.
This leaves me speechless, what beauty
Damn Einar Selvik, this was fucking good. 12/12
What he says about Ragnarok is all true. Many believe it is like the christian armageddon, but it's only the birth of a new better world where fields no longer needs sowing. Two people will survive, and from them a whole new and better man kind will emerge. Gods will die. Thor's son Magne will take Thor's hammer and his place etc. Read it!
where can i find a reliable source of undisturbed texts?
The kvads and dråpas, you must read Hávamál, that's online in anglo.

one of my favorite dråpas.
www.heimskringla.no/wiki/H%C3%A1konarm%C3%A1l
The last heathen king and earl, Håkon Lade jarl.
I'm amazed that so many people are into this now btw.
If you learn icelandic, all the raw material will be there for you. Lot's get lost in translation. Hope I helped some
*****
More than enough help. Much thanks!
Yes, and if i'm correct the dead son of Odin (Baldr) will be the ''new'' lord of lords. Like Odin is now.
bluesboydude Magne takes thor's hammer, and his place when he dies.
I usually listen to Einar's music everyday, it makes me relax after a long day at work, better than therapy.
Huge Applause to this man!
I'm struggling with drugs and isolation, I feel like I'm out of place, a soul less robot, and I'm not alone, our lives are being robbed by technology.
This beautiful music heals my rotten soul.
Hey.. I saw your comment... How are you doing now? I hope you're in a better place.
This is actually really good. The lyre is not so much music as it is a support for keeping pace. Very very traditional. I am impressed. This is recreating oral culture. that had a huge need of being able to retell stories. This is what we are hearing. Alien. Yet heritage.
This feels natural
The other stuff feels alien and is very strange and dishonest.
Kinda like autotune
This is so beautiful, I cried
gifted man. Thanks for uploading
You're welcome
Transcendent. Beyond Beautiful.
Music reaches the soul of EVERY human being you could be in a small African village and this would touch your soul...Well maybe even more because of African folk music....highly similar in some ways.
In my opinion Einar is the the greatest bard of our times... i'm so impressed Skol from Poland!
skål*
When I hear Swedish politicians express the view that Sweden has no heritage, legacy or culture worth saving, It makes me very sad. Can somebody show them this?
Oy! This is norse you damn Sw*de!
hehe.
Yes, but it's tragic to listen to these traitors.
Sven is still there though, not all are subverted, but it's their "media" and extremist elements all through government from top to bottom.
Our swede memes were never just memes, now our big brother is a direct threat to him self.
Well, I'm Australian, in Perth, but I keep up with world events.
it's old Norse, actually. even the name "Einar" comes from old Norse, from the Norway/Sweden region.
even as an outsider, it's sad to see one of Europe's oldest and proudest histories, trampled on, for the sake of political correctness.
straya has indeed correct
Einar is Norwegian
choo! It's not ragnarok yet, back to the ocean with you. But yeah they are, we have tried warned you for lit centuries if not moar about the swedish menace, it's not just memes. But it's not the thread for this. Freking Frey must be pissed... freaking midgardsormen knows into youtube now
i always get tears in my eyes with this song. his voice does something to me. this is so beutiful!!
Just came from a Wardruna show, and totally unexpectedly Einar played this as an encore. Biggest concert of my life.
There is a great tragedy... This man, and Wardruna are making some of the most beautiful and profound music in the history of the world. Yet a huge majority of human beings have never heard of it, nor do they know it exsists. This is tragic and sad.
So tragic that they are always sold out and it is difficult to get tickets to their concert. They are not unknown at all.
my beard is on my toes right now
Because you did a sit up?
Still not long enough
With this song I can see the gates of valhalla
You should see a doctor about that.
Hahaha sure buddy...gotta die in battle first and even then that’s if Freyja doesn’t pick you to go to Folkvangr because she gets first pick
Valhalla sounds boring...drinking and passing out talking of battle tales..its like a night with Napoleon and Genghis khan.
Y'all need to lighten up. He's clearly expressing admiration and that the music makes him connect with these myths and legends on an emotional level.
@@trulsemiljohansen4884 right lol idk about being pissed off by it as much as cringy
When I listen to this, it saddens me to know that I can show this to the young, and they'll laugh at this and belittle it. Will not consider it music. Music like this inspires, lifts the spirit, calms the mind, and soothes the soul. Something that music of theirs lacks.
Depends on the person and their origin i'd say, not everyone born after the 80s have a terrible taste in music.
Well i'm young and I love this
I‘d suggest trying instead of knowing beforehand :)
My boys love it! We are going to go see them live this summer in Colorado
"music of theirs?" what is that even supposed to mean lol. don't just assume that every "young person" doesn't know "real" music
Watching it from Brazil in January 3rd 2021 and with my father in the hospital. Touched my soul. Thank you.
such beatuy, thank you Einar! Sverige,Norge,Danmark and Island UNITE!
So happy I finally get to experience Wardruna live next month in Malmö. Einars singing really touches the very essence of my being.
Jealousy is real
At 3:55, 4:36 ... I had goosebumps from head to toe, it went through my whole body. What a voice !! Just wonderful😍😍
This...activates my danish viking blood like nothing else
this song is really beautiful. I love putting my headphones on, laying down, closing my eyes, and just playing this. Feels like a good trip, truly magical
For someone with such a powerful voice and enthralling stage presence, he seems very anxious on stage
Being a good performer and having good performance charisma doesn't necessarily mean that is going to automatically translate to other areas of engagement. Also, it doesn't matter how nervous he gets while speaking. He has a gift to offer the world and he'll get up and go through whatever he must to deliver it.
I'm so proud of my country! 😭❤️ Old Norse is so beautiful
This is absolutely beautiful, almost ethereal sounding. Fantastic job, what a true artist. ❤️
I honestly cry every time I hear this.
My Gods this man can sing it!
Now I have to finally start watching this Vikings show I keep hearing about.
VIKINGS 🔥 ALWAYS MASTERPIECE 💯❤
As a student of history...How can I not love this? My ancestors were Germanic tribesmen from northern Europe who shared a common pantheon with the Germanic vikings. While the Persians were building their first magnificent empire mine were still tribesmen running the lakes and woods to the beat of an ancient hymn all but lost to the civilized Persians and Greeks... Over the generations since then to now in an unbroken line the song has become fainter and fainter and yet I hear echoes of that ancient hymn in this song and I am reminded again of what was and still could be.
LYRICS ALERT!!!
This is a great way to learn part of the rich wisdom of the Völuspá... great work, great artist, great live performance... Less talk, more singing:

Gran manera d'aprendre la rica saviesa del Völuspá... gran treball, gran artista, gran actuació en viu... Menys xerrar, més cantar:

Is this some kind of automatic translation?
I believe the following translation is more accurate:
[1]:
"For silence I ask all the holy children, great and small sons of Heimdallr; wilt thou, that I, Valfather! well recount ancient history of men, the first I remember.
[57]:
The sun darkens, earth in ocean sinks, from heaven trembles bright stars; the raging reek with age to linger, plays load heat with heaven itself.

Brothers may fight and fell each other, may sisters' sons kinship stain; (…)
(47):

(59):
(…)waterfalls descending, eagle flying over, she from mountains captures fish.
[64]:

David gutierrez:
Si et plau, m'has d'explicar per què no t'ho creus.
This is amazing actually it's the best thing i've ever heard.
How beautiful this song is...and the pure talent Wardruna has.. I hope to hear more songs like this
I love coming back to watch this. Still my most favourite performance by him
Greetings from Turkey, i love all songs of scandinavia and northern europe😊😊
Hungarian translation from a book called Bernáth István - Skandináv mitológia (2005)
Völuspá (A jósnő szava)
1. Szólni szeretnék,
szent istensarjak,
Heimdall-fiaknak
fiatalja, vénje.
Úgy akartad, Hadúr,
öntsem újra szóba
ősi múltnak
őrzött üzenetét.
57. Feketül a napfény,
föld merül a vízbe,
fénye csillagoknak
elfakul az égen,
párasugár csap fel,
félelmes lángoszlop,
iszonyú hőség
hatol az égig.
45. Testvér tör testvérre,
eltiporják egymást,
rokonságot rokon
ront szanaszét.
47. Még áll, de már inog
Yggdrasil, a kőris,
lombja nyög és sír,
hogy Loki elszabadult.
58. Vonyít Garm veszettül
Gnipahellir-kőnél:
béklyója felpattan
szabadul a Farkas.
59. Vízesés dörög,
sas suhan fölé,
szikláról röppenve
száll ki halászni.
64. Lát ott egy csarnokot,
csillogóbb a Napnál,
nemes arany fedi,
neve Gimlé:
élni abban fognak
érdemes emberek,
örömöt élvezők
örökétig.
Atyaég, erre nem számítottam a kommentszekcióban, de 1000 hála és köszönet!!
HOLY SHIT!! Einar really stirred so much emotion inside me when I listened to this, so beautiful.
What an absolutely completely beautiful human. Wow. I could listen to him forever, transfixed. This song literally FEELS like the majesty of nature, it is so nourishing on a soul level 💜💜💜😌
It’s a dream for me to see and HEAR Wardruna in person!!! Einar is talking… WHY IS EVERYONE TALKING????? 😳🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
He’s sharing wisdom. Every song is a labor of truth-seeking and spirituality.
Einar...You explain things so people can understand the way things are...I love watching and Listening to you!
I've never heard a voice like Einar's. A rare voice that can speak to your soul. No need to comment about the deep knowledge and wisdom of his words..
a true viking. real ragnar would be proud of this :)
he's a skald (our poets of the old)
us great zimbabweans appreciate this
A man who is keeping his own culture alive, too little people like this sadly I'm one of them.
That is what I call a talented singer! Well done brother! U sing like a God!,, beautiful song!!👍👍👍
4:46 this part...literal chills 😶 One of my favourite performances and i love how he explains the song before singing it. He must be such an amazing man to meet and talk to. Cant wait to see him perform one day.
They announced a North American tour this fall.
I listened to this at the stroke of the year changing this new year's eve. Seemed appropriate.
when he hits *that* note I swear to the gods I go to a different place.
This is the power of music, when you dont understand any word but its still makes you cry and gives you goosebumps. Thank you so much Einar! loves from Hungary&Turkey
Absolutely love the way Einar has brought old Norse folk music back to the world with a modern touch, you are incredible tusen tak
В его голосе чувствуется древняя эпичность. Как звучит в душу.
Музыка Вардруны и голос Эйнара спасает меня от проблем и даёт расслабиться и почувствовать лёгкость в теле и в душе......

It's a shame that people are talking in the background and not listening to him. It's so beautiful and soul touching
I am so thankfull for u'r speech that life is a circle my grandfather died last night and his words help me very very well to accept
El mejor profesor. Comprendí muchas cosas de "mitología nórdica" para aplicarlas en la vida diaria.
I'm crying. I can't even express the feeling that's inside me but it's beautiful

Something about this particular verse is so beautiful to me. You can just feel the emotion in his voice after he sings that last word.

Good and Holy Song for us :)!
Peace from Germany .
This man is a treasure to the whole of northern europe
Beautiful. His words at the beginning could make me cry. Every time somebody close to me dies, I will think of these words. Let go of old things to make room for new life.
