i have a 2003 matrix XRS project car and love it...just under 200k km and runs flawless...ive had it for the last 60k with no problems...only cons are the premium fuel is a must and keep a tight maintenance schedule
It took me a little bit to get used to it, but once I did I love it. It is really nice if you install a TWM short throw shifter. The TRD quick shifter is junk.
I had an 03 matrix xrs. I loved the position of the shifter, the only issue was that is was pretty notchy, not very smooth shifting, but was very fun to drive. I miss that car.
There are differences in the years of the Toyota Matrix XRS 2003 6spd manual = 180hp (needed Premium gas) 2004 6spd manual = 173hp 2005 6spd manual = 170hp (needed Premium gas) 2006 6spd manual = 164hp 2007+, the XRS trim was discontinued.
I snake the wires from behind the radio above the footwell cover then remove each door sill cover and feed the wire down the side of the car to the back. I ground the amp in the trunk and send the power wire with the speaker wire but force it through a rubber grommet in the firewall to the battery
Hello. I own a Toyota matrix as you are. Looking for fender extensions for mounting holes of the factory clips in America. Can't find it. Can tell me the website to buy and send to Russia. Thanks in advance.
a 99 dakota r/t. It is such an awesome truck, would smoke the matrix xrs anyday, I would have never thought so when I owned the matrix. I can say it wasnt the smartedt decision when it came to gas mileage, but I have no regrets. I still have my 05 corolla. Toyota for life.
Hey im looking forward to buying a 2003-2005 matrix but im really hesitant wether or not i should get a stick shift or automatic. Im kind of planning to keep it for some long time . I got tempted more as you when i heard the engine on that as you were going on high speed so that was awesome. So should i get a stick shift or automatic?
These are such great cars, great on gas. I had a 03 matrix xrs and taht thing was so fun to drive, couldnt stop taking it into lift< my lift kicked in at 6k, the 04 and up was 6200 or 650 rpm. The one bad thing about the vvtl-i engine was that it is hard to build up. There are a few aftermarket parts for it but you dont get the gains out of the parts that you would get out of any other vehicle, it costs more to build up. I ended up wanting something different so I got rid of it and bought
i have matrix xrs 04 and i put SRI magnaflow catback with resonator delete and MWR underdrive pulleys. i love the driving feel over stock but i miss the sublte throatiness of the stock xrs exhaust. My set up is pretty loud.
I use to have a 2003 Matrix XRS...I could not believe it when they killed the VVTL-i set up...It would be like Honda saying, eh we are not doing VTEC anymore. Last Toyota I ever owned. Getting ready to order a 2014 Ford Focus ST ;)
ADVICE GUYS. I'm planin to buy a used 2003-2005 Toyota Matrix with 200k miles on it. Is this car dependable overall? What are the parts that broken down often with costly repairs? How reliable is the manual transmission? What model year should I avoid, I heard 03-04 Matrixs are no good. I am a self-taught mechanic, I fix the car up myself except for the timing belt change I let the shop do it. So minor fixer-upper is no big deal to me. Your advice is appreciated.
LT T I know this is a little late, but I am an owner of a 2003 Matrix XRS Manual transmission. it is a very reliable and fun car. Things you should know are: Axle seals are common replacement parts, especially when you hit about 150,000KM on the engine, though they are not a huge issue, O2 Sensor and MAF sensor should be checked every once in a while, to make sure it's clean, or else you'll get P0420 Engine code, and your Cat converter will be less effecient as well as you'll be burning more fuel. Also I recommend checking the CV joints during oil changes to make sure they are not leaking. Any Toyota engine with a ZZ block (1ZZ, 2ZZ especially) when burning mass amounts of oil are detrimental, as the oil pumps can commonly deteriorate. 2ZZs burn a little bit of oil when on the second Cam profile, but if it is burning mass amounts in first cam profile, stop driving and get the engine rebuilt. With that being said, make sure you keep up with maintenance, and make sure oil is always at the proper level. Also don't forget the XRS can only run on premium, and if you run it on regular you will get significant knocking and damage your engine. Lastly, the shifter and clutch takes a little getting used to. The bite point on the clutch is lower that most other cars, mainly since its a sport transmission and meant for quick shifts. The shifter itself seems to catch a lot and I HIGHLY recommend replacing the normal bushings with MWR (Monkey Wrench Racing) Brass bushings. Otherwise I LOVE the car. It has AMAZING power and is a sleeper that no one would ever expect to be a race car. It's super fun and I enjoy it
Same question I had when looking. I researched it. I have seen pretty good results. Many XRS/XR running around with high mileage. I got lucky and landed one with 39k. It has 59000 now with zero issues. Keep an eye out might sell mine.
Have not seen such postings. As far as im concerned all stock clutches are weak. The only big complaint that falls on the c60 trans is that it is geard in such a way that the car falls out of lift for a few 100 rpm. Something that can be remedied with a tune to activate the high cam earlier.
Tyler Nicolo this is fairly true but i dont know about the whole trans failure. I have a 2003 1zz vibe(same as matrix), my father owned from brand new and now ive had it for a year. The bearing is a common problem in the 1zz tranny not sure about the 2zz though. we realized it was going and had it repaired for $500. but other than that this car is extraordinary. the car has pulled trailers many times (4x4 atv) in its life. she has 215000 KM original CLUTCH, alternator, water pump, rear brakes, rotors, 2nd battery. Only other things replaced was front bearings( usual maintenance at 200 00 km). these minor repairs can be neglected comparing to some vehicles. The matrix xrs is a reliable car and id love to own one :p if you take good maintenance of something it will last. if you do buy something with a 2zz make sure you constantly watch the oil as a low oil can destroy the oil pump sending sharpnel through your engine.

All the 2zz XRS' needed premium fuel.

@SuperR1991 There was an XRS automatic in 2003 only. From 2004-2006 it is stick-only.

I was thinking about getting a used 2004 XRS...are they reliable? How are they over 100k miles?

***** Thanks for the info! I heard the 04 XRS has a weak transmission/clutch and has problems around 100k miles. Have you heard anything like that?
