    Hi Paul, Just sharing one way to make it much easier to remember the 8 Wastes. Key word is DOWNTIME.
    D - Defects
    O - Overproduction
    W - Waiting time
    N - Not ulitizing talent
    T - Transportation
    I - Inventory
    M - Motion Waste
    E - Excess Processing.
    Thanks for sharing your experience in executing lean culture. It is very valuable, it adds immense value to day. I'm a beginner here and now taking a different approach to my area of responsibility. Cheers!

      Sorry, I personally am not in favor of any acronyms. I think it distorts the eight wastes. Paul

    • @paul-akers
      @paul-akers  4 роки тому +4

      mat2513 here’s the problem lots of people memorize it through an acronym but in my opinion that is not a good way to do it. This is the way I was taught to do it and it never worked I didn’t understand the eight ways I just memorize them. you must understand it always originates from overproduction when you make too much of things. now that you’ve made too much you have to transport it what are you gonna do with it now you’re going to stick it in inventory. Do you see where I’m going with this it’s simply a story no need to memorize an acronym just understand the story of waste. so now you’re over production is sitting in inventory and your customer orders but they want it different than what you’ve already made so now you have a defect and you have to overprocessing waste emotion meanwhile your customers waiting because you’re over processing your defects and you’re wasting your potential because instead of doing value added work you’re caught up in the waste cycle

    • @paul-akers
      @paul-akers  4 роки тому +2

      mat2513 You don’t you don’t wanna use an acronym it defeats the purpose you wanna understand where Waste comes from a need originates from overproduction.

    • @paul-akers
      @paul-akers  3 місяці тому

      @@mat2513 Matt, my philosophy after doing Lean for 24 years is it best not to use an acronym I will explain. When you understand that waste comes from overproduction that is the origin of it. Then you begin to understand that remembering an acronym is not as powerful. It is best to have a deep understanding of waste so I think of it as a story. You overproduce too much of something then you have to transport it then you have to put it in inventory then you retrieve it from inventory and you find a defect or the product is not what the customer wants any longer because you made it five months ago then you have to overprocess it, you have to change it repair it fix it effort you have access motion while you’re doing all this crazy work. Your customer is waiting and you’ve wasted your potential as a human being because instead of refining the process and producing the product just in time you’re overproducing, stacking it on shelves repairing defects and the way cycle just goes round and round and round no need for an acronym just understand how waste is originated and how it flows through your life

    Hi Paul, I loved the energy & fun way that you read the audiobook. I'm inspired by what you've shared to apply the lean principles to my life. Let's see if hubby picks up on my lean way of being!
    Biggest take aways -
    1: Focus on taking daily action on what's bugging me to eliminate waste of resources & time
    2: Resist the temptation to change others (I will stay in my lane)
    3: Applying the Lean principles are simple
    4: Make it fun!
    5: Perfection isn't in the Lean vocabulary

    I absolutely love the statement made in this and other videos that orders are received, the products made, packaged and sent out in two hours. This process is the dream of most companies. I know that Lean is focussed on making the process, all processes, easier. But the fact that your order, creation and shipping process is down to two hours. That is awe inspiring and a hell of a standard. Good job and thanks for setting a great example. Cheers.

    Hi Paul - this is a great book so thank you! I work for a company that introduced tools and techniques before the people/culture piece and needless to say, the results have been less than inspiring. We now find ourselves rethinking as to how to turn the focus back to the people/culture aspect without losing what we have gained on the tools and techniques portion. With hindsight being 20/20 we obviously should've started with the people/cultural aspect first. Regards, Joe

      Ian The key to Lean is very simple. Most people prefer to complicate it.
      - understand that everything you do in life from brushing your teeth to making your lunch to managing your health is a process, there are no exceptions to this rule.
      - contained in every process is an abundance of the eight different kinds of waste.
      - learn to see the waves in these processes
      - eliminate the waste by making small improvements to the processes every day.
      - you always start with yourself. You have enough waste for 10 lifetimes. Never look at anyone else, Just start improving you!
      Lean is no more or no less than this it's that simple.
      Make sure you tell your people lean should be fun and that it should improve the quality of their life and their work. They will get it intuitively!

    Hey Paul! It would be pretty lean if you added hyper links in the description to the time in the video where a chapter starts. Then there's no wasting time if you want to jump to a specific chapter.
    You could also add links in the "video" to the other videos you are referring to.

      Paul Akers / Greg I like that it has the times and that it links to a site with the videos. It does take me out of the UA-cam app which is not ideal but is probably the best solution for easily resuming the bill where you last were. This is good. Is it possible to make it so that when you click on the chapter time it jumps to that part in the video?

    • @paul-akers
      @paul-akers  7 років тому

      Hi William, Looks like UA-cam has a bit of a disconnect between their features on computers vs. smart phones/tablets. The timestamps link right to the chapter from a computer but don't appear as links on smartphones/tablets for some reason. I've contacted UA-cam to see if we can efficiently remedy that issue and awaiting their reply. I'll let you know when we have an answer. Greg

    I think we need a new category of LEAN, some of us practice LEAN, others dabble, but some of us are extreme, even Radical.....I think we need a place for us radical types. Radical lean would elevate it to almost a philosophy or like Bushido in Japan. Radical lean followers would be the cutting edge advancing the entire system. Worth a consideration.

    I don't want to be too hard here because I think your basic principles work for people who have never asked "can it be done faster" but this book is obnoxious. Your whole point is to cut the fat, be lean and yet your book is thick and overflowing with fluff. You must mention the word lean like 1000 times. We got it the first 100. You could have used your own principles to scale this down to the core values you talk about and it would have fit in under 5 chapters. Adding 5 new chapters of mostly the same content on repeat added little value. Again, the stuff you talk about can help the people who don't think like this but for the ADHD among us, this book was too long.

      As someone actually diagnosed with ADHD, I found the fluff enjoyable. However yes, a summarized version would be useful to save time...but also very boring.

      Damn I must have a rare kind of ADHD that makes my focus shift so fast that I want things straight to the point in as less time as possible, otherwise you lose me.

      What’s the point of writing any book if you just want the spark notes version of it? Most people don’t read books only just get the info-listening and reading books is for enjoyment. Every book has “fluff”
      Repetition is also important in learning to really drill down the core knowledge. You won’t get points down without lots of exposure to them.

    My friend recommended this book when I was talking about crappy corporate and I found it while with him yesterday. This isn't what I was looking for yet deep down it WAS if that makes sense. On a subconscious level.
