The Kanawa legend strikes again!!
You’re a legend you’re self!
Haha thanks man 😁
@@TatsukiHashida :)
Excellent work and a joy to watch the process and the finished post.
thanks!
Very nice touch using a round tree trunk for the adjoining/supporting post. Beautiful work, beautiful materials. Thank you for this video.
I was a carpenter for many years. Ok at my job, never a master.
Japanese master craftsmen are always amazing to me. The patience and skill is incredible
The finest joinery skills, I'm totally astonished and delighted
Stunning work. I can cut a similar scarf joint, but to do it with such accuracy in mid air is amazing! How do you insert it into position without there being a gap at the foot of the new post (between the post and the stone) when you hammer in the wedges?
Thanks, for this I inserted the base after assembling the joint (by jacking up the post slightly).
Excellant video Dylan ! Thank You
Thanks! 😊🙌
Nice work! High end line drawing techniques.
Thanks 😊🙌
I am always amazed at this skill you have. The minds that first implemented this method are of genius, no other way to describe it. Thank you for this video 🙂
Happy to hear that. Cheers! 🙌
Real fine job Dylan! :)
Thanks 😊🙌
Magnificent Bravo
Amazing, Iwakuni-dono!!!

Beautiful 🙌🙌

Hi, nice and clean work on this joint !! The resulting repair looks beautyful, like a tree growed in the room 😀
May I ask the purpose of lightly watering the wood as you did at some point?
it helps with cutting end grain, makes the fiber more gentle on the bevel
Thanks, yes as mentioned above, it makes it easier to cut
The mid air magic is wonderful! What did you spray on the end grain? Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, its just water
Stunning job. Very elegant mix between old and new post. I do like those stump branches protruding from the new post. You're an amazing craftsman.
Thank you 😊
Hmmm... what we are looking at above the joint (like at 9:04) seems to be more or less in the same sort of condition as the piece you are replacing, or is that not really the case? I'm just wondering how you make the decision when to leave certain parts as they are while replacing other parts?
Cutting one half on the bench is a challenge, cutting the other half in mid-air is insane…….!
Cheers! 😊🙌
う~~~ん、並みの腕じゃないね・・
ここまで出来る大工はめったに居ない・・これからも頑張ってください
ありがとうございます😊
Amazeballs - thanks for expanding on your recent 'Short' as promised. So no jig but string lines to 'project' a line onto the timber.. That was easy for the new piece - sticks fixed to eaither end - but wondering how you set up the other end of the strings on the cut post.
Thanks, for the post, I used a spirit level to get a parallel reference line on either side.
Wow👍🤘🏾👍
I want a very complex glueless wooden joint with three arms at the ends of which each arm is by chance a different complex uncompleted joint end yet different from any in any arm's joint end including that complex being different from the joined originally completed one.
Do all joints require comparable fittings? This problem may not be physical.
If it is, would you be able to physically make it? For how many American dollars?
I know that this joint doesn't NEED glue BUT, might it be at least a little stronger with some Titebond 3 in there for good measure? Just curious. LOVE you work by the way. MUCH RESPECT! /deep bow
Glue and green wood don't work well. The wood will move over time, and the glue will fail. As the wood shrinks, the wedge can be tapped in further to accommodate the wood drying out.
@@dr0bi interesting...thanks
Aside from the intricate beauty and precision execution why not swap out the whole post? Is such practice common in Japan in a rehab? Beautiful!
Thanks, it was not possible to remove the post as there where several beams intersecting the post (with through tenons).
Україна. Вибачте , але цей стовб повинен бути гладенько обтесаний, щоб в людей, які будуть жити в цьому домі ,по народному повірью не було гриж ,тобто хвороб, все інше зроблено професійно .Удачи?!
Marking out is an art in itself.
That juxtaposition is beautiful. Well done.
So this joinery is intended for columns but not for beams, right? Compression but not bending
I've used this joint for all the "beams" in a laundry pulley, and so far they've held the weight of the heaviest of wet bed sheets and towels!
You regularly see scarf joints in roof ridge boards and things. Not sure I've seen in beams, but I can't think why it wouldn't work.
My understanding is that it’s used to lengthen beams. I’ve seen horizontal beams be extended like this but only if there’s a post underneath
@@erk9822 It's ok to have a scarf that isn't directly over a beam but you probably wouldn't want to make the joint in the middle of a span. A traditional German way to do it is just one side of a post with, somewhat counter-intuitively, the spanning member hanging off the short projecting member.
This joinery can be used for both
Awesome
Awesome job a joy to watch the focus and commitment ⛩️🎏🙏🏽
Thanks 😊
how long have you trained in the art of woodworking? incredible :0
The answer isn’t how long have you trained in woodwork. But knowing that you will spend your whole life learning your chosen trade.
Wow. Absolutely masterful.
Cheers 😊🙌
The biggest version of it i have ever seen can be visited in low tide at the Itsukushima shrine tori. I was blown away when i recognized that this must have been a repair job for the tori standing in the sea water. 😊
Wow. Superb
WoW!!! Usted es una persona increíble, gracias por pasar el aprendizaje. Tiene toda mi admiración.
Thank you 😊
That is a beautiful strong joint. A pleasure to watch.
Cheers! 😊🙌
Beautiful. Thank you

Tolle Arbeit, schöne Verbindung. Sehr sauber gearbeitet, vor allem am hängenden Pfosten. 👍🏾😎 Greetings from 🇩🇪
