You have to really love cooking to open a restaurant, but don't expect a big payday unless you're a franchisee and you get a crew that can make the food to spec. 100% never work with family. In my experience, working with family makes you hate each other and become estranged, or someone screws someone else over in the deal and it's terrible. If you put your house down as collateral you better at least have some numbers that indicate you will be successful. This show makes you realize what can go wrong.
My mother also wouldn't talk to me the she/the aunt did. Calling him worthless and a pig isn't conducive to improving the situation, they are literally (verbally) abusing him. I haven't finished the episode but for what? Let the son go do whatever it is he would rather be doing and hire a chef (or promote your existing ones), and stop letting the failure of a business ruin your relationship.
Not only is Gordon a chef. He's also an accountant, family therapist, interior decorator, food critic, marriage counselor, health inspector, priest, psychic, mechanic, and soon to be aviation engineer
They throw Chef Mike out a 2nd story window, and the restaurant closes shortly thereafter. Coincidence? Not likely. He was the only thing holding the place together.
the POWER the waiter who made the chef mike joke has, imagine making a joke infront of gordon ramsay, and not only does he say it multiple times in the same episode/visit, but it ALSO becomes a running joke
The update is they ended up closing shortly after this episode aired. Several of the kitchen staff quit as Jake was reported not being easy to work with and already started making shortcuts on Gordon’s menu. Apparently their regulars didn’t like the changes because of the new menu not being authentic (just according to regulars). Their debts were too much to overcome and the ratings online were all about the poor food quality, menu availability, and slow service. That’s what happens when your head chef can’t even bother to put in full time hours because he’s addicted to video games.
Thank you Gordon really had way too much sympathy for this goofy dude and can’t believe he basically told his mother and aunt to basically stop criticizing him
From what I understand a good majority of these places shown on tv either shutdown soon after or revert back to the old ways and then shut down. It's ridiculous to think places like this can just turn it around over night.

I just love when he decides to change and her demeanor changes 180 degrees, showing her compassion, that she still loves her nephew, and all she needed to hear is that he'd commit to changing. That just melted my heart. So much unhappiness, dissolved. She really was the backbone there. And I'm pretty sure Athina and Kiki are twins. Their resemblance to each other is uncanny.
The dumb guy that made the restaurant popular and was dragged down by her constant nagging and bitching to the point of not caring about life anymore. what a GREAT CHARACTER!
imagine pouring your life savings into your sons restaurant, 800k, you move to help him, your sister moves and ends up having to help and over time you watch as he burns through your savings and gets lazier and lazier with lower and lower standards. To the point where while you show up at 6am and work all day when you should be retired he arrives midday and then mopes about barely lifting a finger. The heaviest lifting he managed was carrying the massive balls it took to justify and excuse away his abysmal work ethic and food standards while insulting and arguing with his mother and aunt about why it was their fault that he was a lazy useless waste of space.
I honestly wanted Gordon to smack him down after hearing him call his mother by her first name and tell her to gtfo of his restaurant when she turns up at 6am and he shows up 11 each day. What a POS.
She isn't so innocent. She screams manipulation and "poor old lady" routine. Who the hell says "I'd rather be dead than have a son like you" so nonchalantly?.. An emotionally abusive mother, that is who.
@lucydog3376 Pretty much all little old Greek Yia-Yias say things like that over the smallest stuff all the time. Everybody knows they aren't being serious. But when you take something from one culture, stick it in another cultural context, cut it for TV and put dramatic music behind it, it paints a different picture.

The only time I was ever even halfway close to being this awful to my mom was during my psychotic episode during my mental health crisis that I don’t remember any of (I’ve been told what happened during that time). Let the disgraceful old baby nephew understand that he was nothing without them. I have never ever felt disgusted to anyone like this. I have watched this show for years. How can she call her mom like that. I wish, it's just him. Hope it is not western ways treat parents. Love parents please, sometimes they nag. It's all because they love you and want you to change
Gordon's changes lives. Brings families closer, so they become passionate again. He's Chef/counsellor/life coach all in one. I cried when they were fighting. I grew up with a few Greek families and I've only ever known them to be passionate about their culture, family. Always loving, spportive and productive as a whole.
Except it's usually just for the cameras. They go back to their old ways much like this family did. Most of the restaurants close shortly after they air.

He hates that his Mom nags, but doesn’t realize if he did what he was supposed to she wouldn’t HAVE to nag. Perfect timing sample of zero accountability.
I knew a guy like that once, he didnt do a thing to help or contribute to affairs of his flat, he left the place an actual dumpsite, and he acted so shocked as he wondered why his dad nagged him so frequently😂😅
That chef was very clearly depressed. Sleeping late, little to no motivation, didn’t care about anything, tired/sleepy constantly. Considering the direction the restaurant was going and getting yelled at and criticized by everyone around him, it probably all built up until he got burnt out.
I dunno - it's easy to judge these situations from the outside but the whole "I would rather die, I would rather be dead than have a son like you" that's textbook passive aggressive, manipulative, emotionally abusive behaviour and the son is showing signs of serious depression, not laziness. The fact that she can't wait to join in when Gordon starts attacking him is another big red flag for that. Then she literally goes out and prays that Gordon is going to attack him for her. My guess is that the mother has brow beaten and emotionality abused her son into deep depression and then used the symptoms of the depression she caused against him. Honestly, with a mother like that desperately waiting for a chance to tell him what a failure he was, I don't blame him for not wanting to go into work. And nobody will recognise what she's doing because she looks like a sweet older woman.
Jake has depression. Being tired all the time and losing interest are major symptoms. This is an example of how much depression can destroy your life, but ppl who dont suffer with it dont understand and accuse you of being lazy. Just makes it worse.
My thoughts exactly, He reminded me a lot of myself from years ago. I'm in therapy and I would never have been functional and even successful today without it. Screaming to a depressed person that he/she is worthless does not help.
Yea and the way the mother handles it is just sickening but so typical. Everyone acts like she’s a sweet old lady but I think the definitely plays a role there. „I’d rather be dead than have a son like you“ bruh tf is wrong with this mother. No wonder he’s depressed

it really is so beautiful to see these restaurant owners become more likable and see the restaurant just become so much better, i respect everyone who runs this show.
I wouldn't be surprised if, in at least half of the episodes, they just rehearse and stage the parts where the owners get all emotional and apologetic, because it makes for dramatic television.
Let's not gloss over Gordon's sentimental ass asking, after being told the Chef only spends 3 hours at the restaurant, "Is he in love?" Haha that tells you so much about how Gordon's head works, what a softie ☺
the whole show I was keeping my eyes on Anthony and the server, such a fine guys. edit: it's funny watching Gordon not understand a single thing about what they're arguing about and just stand there awkwardly watching them fighting and when kiki starts talking to him he just listens but doesn't have any idea what it means
There are still restaurants that are better than the ones featured on these shows. I know a pasta place near me that hand makes all their pastas and sauces fresh every single day. So freaking good
The problem with these restaurants is the chefs and their bad habits so it doesn’t matter how much Gordon shouts and tries to change recipes they’ll always go back to their crappy ways

I believe there’s more to this story. Jake looked like an addict.. No normal guy would treat his mom & aunt that way.. His lack of self-respect, passion is just a product of whatever susbstance abuse he’s in.. What he needs is not just a restaurant makeover but therapy..
I think he was depressed. The way he reacted to his mom's nagging seemed over the top. But when Kiki went off on him... I kind of get it. She was tearing into him because she saw what he was doing to her sister, and I get it. But that's the kind of rage I'd expect from a mom who's child is hurt/threatened. Not from an aunt who loves him. We were seeing the results of a year+ long spiral of depression. That said, video games can genuinely be dopaminergically addicting, especially when combined with depression and sleep issues which were all present. The man's headspace was not well, for sure. But it's impossible to say from what we've seen whether his mental health was a result or a cause.
why does nobody sees his side? he has to listen to his mother telling him that she rather wanna die than having him as a son. that fucking hurts man. no one feels such rage and madness against their parents for no reason. not every parent is perfect. the kids are the products of their parents.

El Grego closed in December 2011. Several staff left the restaurant including the lead line cook and there were many disagreements after the episode was filmed, according to cook James. James also claimed that Jake was difficult to work with and had already started cutting corners on Gordon's menu. Yelp reviews after his visit were mostly poor with negative comments on the food quality, menu availablity and slow service. 😢
As much as I like watching it, it's generally a stretch thinking a couple of days is going to change what is obviously long standing dynamics like the ones in this episode.
That's an example of why people can't blame Chef Ramsey if the restaurant fails after he tries to help them. You can't help those who won't help themselves

I've binge-watched a lot of Kitchen Nightmares episodes so far; maybe 30 in no particular order. I've heard Gordon use a lot of terms like lazy, arrogant, shameful, stupid, etc. But when Jake was called a 'sack of sh*t', I felt he'd earned the highest possible level of Gordon's contempt.
Yeah it's because that's why Gordon ran away from home. He wasn't abused in any unlawful way, he was just given a rough time with no sympathy. Just like Jake. But unlike Gordon, Jake didn't run away, he stayed and let the restaurant go to pieces as a form of silent protest about the way he was treated. "You wanna yell at me? Ok fine, I'll give you so many reasons to yell at me that you lose your voice."
@@misteral9045 IMO Those two things aren't really comparable...Also Gordon WAS unlawfully abused, his father was violent alcoholic and abused him and his siblings. Gordon had no control over what was happened to him, while the lazy son on the other hand was the reason for most of all the problems, and had absolutely no intention of making things any better. If anything, he held so much contempt for the lazy son simply because he knew that that the guy knew he was driving his mother crazy and into horrible debt and couldn't care less. Gordon is known family man and holds family as one of, if not THE most important things in life. It probably really hurt Gordon to see the horrible situation the mother was in, and the fact the Son was intentionally making things worse, made him even angrier.
@@misteral9045I mean, if we’re being fair, the son was just as abusive as the two women. He’s got no leg to stand on, which is probably why Gordan called him out.

He's clearly an addict. Might be videogames or something else, but he is clearly sleep deprived and depressed, running from his problems instead of facing them.
Yes, what really would have helped was hiring an external chef to lead the kitchen and let him take some months of to fix his depression and addiction.
This is one of the few episodes where Chef Ramsay doesn't even walk into the fridge, which makes me think it was run really well and clean, tells you a lot about the standards his chefs had - dude really fucked something good for himself and his mom, this is beyond tragic.
I don't know about that i feel like this wasn't his dream to begin with because he says he did the course because his mom wanted to open a restaurant I know everyone is blaming him but when you hate something like your job or loose passion or never had it which this guy clearly did not want to be a chef he had no passion the mother did and I guess he tried to appease that before she kicked the bucket some people feel a specific need to please their parents
I was hoping that the Head Chef temporarily left the restaurant while watching the episode. It seems so clear he has mental issues tbh when you observe him. To think that he used to be so good at what he is doing and regress like this much is wondering. I also noticed how the quality of storage and facilities isn't much a problem unlike what we always encounter from other episodes. It's sad to think abt what happened to the restaurant. The Mother could've done different, I felt so much pity for her.
Honestly Jake saying "I don't think it comprises the food" is not just the biggest insult to Gordon Ramsay but the biggest insult to the Culinary Industry. And the fact that he thinks a reheated bagged food is just as fresh as a newly freshly cooked food is just down right insulting, and to make matters worse this guy actually thinks he can run this restaurant without his mom and aunt when he only comes to work for 3 hours, doesn't know how to have standards and reheats every goddamn food this guy is a joke.

Imagine calling yourself a chef and then saying a microwave doesn’t ruin food. Unbelievable

A microwave is just a tool . If you’re a good cook you will use it appropriately. U can’t cook a steak in one. Chefs who cut corners will cut corners with whatever they have

@Heartthrob Goswamy this isn't a funny joke... Think a bit before commenting here.
Thank god i found the comment iam looking for, god o felt so bad for this guy i know exactly how it is living among people who dont understand it and its just so draining, no wonder he dont want to come to work, and i know exactly why he talks like that to his mother cause my mother is the same, i hope he is better now and maybe finds a way away from his mother so he might be able to do what he wants and not needs to dedicate his Life to his mothers dream
he was addicted to world of warcraft.
Just because he may have depression it doesn't excuse his horrid behaviour.
Chef Mike needs more credit! Such a warm character, dedicated and hard working. Can't believe Gordon sent him into early retirement in that horrifying way :(
it really is so beautiful to see these restaurant owners become more likable and see the restaurant just become so much better, i respect everyone who runs this show.
He was in love, with World of Warcraft.

Best line of the series
Not only will I ever invest in a restaurant, after watching all these Gordan Ramsay shows, I'm no longer eating out.
I always see dirt in restaurants, they are gross
There are still restaurants that are better than the ones featured on these shows. I know a pasta place near me that hand makes all their pastas and sauces fresh every single day. So freaking good
The problem with these restaurants is the chefs and their bad habits so it doesn’t matter how much Gordon shouts and tries to change recipes they’ll always go back to their crappy ways
Not all of them but the vast majority yes. It's just sad.
It's all scripted... How can you even believe all that? It's so fake I cringe to even watch it... No offence to Gordon.
@@jaroos6663 haha what not it’s not it’s just filmed such a long time ago some scenes really do look scripted ..times have changed people act differently but what Goes on in the episodes is real
@@niamhr_2000 There is no chance in the world that this is true, sorry to ruin your world ;p
@@niamhr_2000 When they meet the owners they are sometimes giving scripts to read , and they sign a contract that says if they don't talk about the show they will receive a lot of money from the channel.
Also sometimes the guest are real chefs too so that at launch they get extra picky, and you can find proof all over if you think about how everything that happens is filmed in the strangest positions. (Like how a camera can catch someone typing on their phone close up (how the hell is that not scripted ? u can even read what they write on the phone)

I don’t have any cable but I have premium UA-cam and HD Netflix memberships and these replace my cable bills. I don’t watch TV on cables or local news. I watch streamed live news from all over the world. I mean who would watch cables these days? Every time I watch an episode on UA-cam they get paid and times that by billions of viewers worldwide. UA-cam has worldwide audiences, vs local US population being only 4.25% of the world population. They’re just being very smart. Not generous as they’re getting paid. They’re simply smarter than others.
This "man" is the official Kitchen Nightmares channel...
I think he's depressed.
why does nobody sees his side? he has to listen to his mother telling him that she rather wanna die than having him as a son. that fucking hurts man. no one feels such rage and madness against their parents for no reason. not every parent is perfect. the kids are the products of their parents.
For me Depression looks diffrent.i think he is an addict.
@@was1sadlife315 I think she said that because of how he treats her not the other way around

"Word has spread that Gordon is in town"
*Town population turns into expert food critics*
😂😂😂
I would give my left you know what to have Gordon R come in my restaurant and pick apart what I was doing wrong then I would listen and everything he told me .
That's sad man...
@@agent57 I think the main thing is. Long term change isn't an option for these places.
@@Aevilbeast Abuse isn't comparable to abuse? Lmao. I'd stop right there but I read the rest of it anyway and yeah it's just yapping.
@Iguessthislldo Anti-intellectuals are unpleasant as a concept, but in practice, well, they're anti-intellectuals.
@@misteral9045I mean, if we’re being fair, the son was just as abusive as the two women. He’s got no leg to stand on, which is probably why Gordan called him out.

20:09 Gordon: "Wow!!"
"Wow.. yeah.. I need table twenty."

Let's give some props to Dustin, the true hero behind 'Chef Mike'.
I've yelled at the screen more in this episode than the rest of the series combined. If the boss weren't his mother, Jake would have lost his jobs years ago

so trueee, i can't even say "what? " to her whenever she calls me without context, I'm walking my assoff to just find her randomly checking on me by yelling my name:)
I'd be hit with a hard right cross to the face. Mike Tyson in his prime type shit if I talked like how he does to his mom 🤣🤣
26:02 I find it hilarious that a man who doesn’t get to work till 11-12 am, has average 3 hour shift, and who’s whole job is basically sitting around and microwaving food is saying he can’t deal with the pressure of this to Gordon FLIPPING Ramsey! A man who worked with one of the greatest and harshest chiefs in the world, a chief who made Ramsey cry. From this context Gordon’s reactions are priceless.
The way that man speaks to his mother, I was just horrified. Calling her by her first name, huge disrespect in my cultures(I have a Japanese mother) , shushing her by saying "be quiet" and telling her to get the f..out of "my restaurant" that she paid for ? Lord have mercy if I talked to my mother in that way.

@@zenzuoken4496 I am Asian 2.but what is shameful is that I spoke with my mother in the same way as this man,to be honest.but the reason that I spoke like that is my mother did a lot of horrible decisions of financial investment and stubborn ,single minded and obsessive with a cult which only care about controlling her bank account, what should I do to her?respect?

This is one of the few episodes where Chef Ramsay doesn't even walk into the fridge, which makes me think it was run really well and clean, tells you a lot about the standards his chefs had - dude really fucked something good for himself and his mom, this is beyond tragic.
It was probably clean bc the food was always prepared by the aunts and then it was just microwaved xD
I don't know about that i feel like this wasn't his dream to begin with because he says he did the course because his mom wanted to open a restaurant
I know everyone is blaming him but when you hate something like your job or loose passion or never had it which this guy clearly did not want to be a chef he had no passion the mother did and I guess he tried to appease that before she kicked the bucket

@@alien-ann Absolutely this, I honestly feel bad for the dude.
@@alien-ann He looked so depressed.
