    Honestly? I loved that movie. Was it perfect? Hell no. But I was thoroughly entertained. I don't always need an overly complex character. Also I do think that McCall's(?) traps / weapons weren't just show-value. None of them were overly complicated and some traps didn't even work right away, which is why he had to improvise. Besides, I thought the traps did say something about his character. He's not a whole lot different from the bad guy of the movie, besides that he actually feels compassion for people. Doesn't mean that he doesn't revel in the bloodshed though.

    The movie did what it was designed to do... Be a fun movie. I watched it, and I nearly hit play again, I rarely ever watch a movie twice, and I was almost ready to do that with this.

    I thought the movie was perfectly watchable. It did have one thing working against it though: I never felt at any point like Denzel's character was in any kind of danger. He was just too on top of it, not really vulnerable in any way. He does get shot at one point, but it's like ten minutes from the end of the movie, and he just kind of keeps going like nothing happened.

    MOVIE MAN VOICE: In a world where Denzel Washington plays another role in which he plays a character just like he did the time before that and the 15 times before THAT and does it just as good a job the last time.
    Denzel does a good job with his movies. Even though a lot of his characters are similar, he always does a good job portraying them. Most of his movies are fun and for that I'll continue to watch. Great review, Stuckmann.

      I love Denzel, but I thought I was the only one that noticed he plays the same guy over and over but in different situations. Funny how some actors get away with it like him but others like Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves get ripped for it.

    This movie and Man On Fire are, to me, 80s or 90s action movies that back in the day would've starred Arnie or Stallone and been great fun super shallow entertainment of the kind I really miss. But these two movies are nearly perfect modern interpretations of that genre. Great modern direction and production values that crucially don't dilute the action with some of the more misguided modern conventions. Key in the day was a big strong charismatic and daring lead who could sell you the fact that he could achieve these feats (but no one was an utterly ridiculous super-human martial artist) but we could get behind him because he was a meek and mild man who's trying to be good but is forced into action. It's never too old for and old dog like me and it allowed us to have a super fun and therapeutic power-trip fantasy in the 80s and 90s but is almost always mishandled dreadfully these days. But not these two movies where careful handling and having Denzel on board has modernised and refreshed the genre. I never would have picked Denzel as this decades best Arnie and Stallone replacement but he IS. We used to yell "AHHNEEEE!" but now it's "DENZELLLL!" Best simple modern action movies. A+ from me.

    I like this movie because besides all the power that the villain has, the hero never fails, (unlike other movies like hero fails one or two times in a movie) he blocks every attack, perfectly plans everything even he is in a desperate situation such as his friend are being held hostage. Thats why I loved this movie.

    I don't know, Stuckmann. I'm usually with you on these things, but I didn't see any of the 'holes' you said were in this movie. For me, it flowed pretty much from beginning to end. The violence was heavy, but it made sense for the character for me. I didn't think you had to learn about his entire back-story because it wasn't necessary. We know pretty much all we need to know about him. He's a man with a particular set of skills who holds back his violent impulses because he's got that much self control. That is, until he sees something unforgivable and can no longer fight the urge to 'equalize' the situation.
    I give it an A. An A- at worst. But, to each his own, I suppose.

    • @alienanxiety

      How's this for a hole - he completely trashes a Home Depot and murders multiple people in the store, some of them in front of his co-worker, and the cops never question what happened? Denzel doesn't leave town, just keeps going about his regular routine.

  • @jarenc2048
    @jarenc2048 9 років тому +11

    The characters do tie in. And it might be because of the tv show where the equalizer helps different people so that's what Denzel's character does. I think the characters tie in not only because they know Denzel but because all of the bad guys are in the same circles so Denzel basically has to take down the very core of it if he wants all of that crime ring to end. And he probably doesn't know any other way to get the job done than to be quick and not just tote a gun the whole time. I think it gets an A. The Equalizer and John Wick were my favorites for 2014.

    The first two relationships in the movie were there to spark his old self to re-emerge for the benefit of those who need his help. It is acknowledging, and laying the groundwork for his becoming “the equalizer”, you know the TV show it’s named after?

    I finally saw The Equalizer tonight. Absolutely loved it, although I did feel this script could easily have been handed over to Liam Neeson and no one would have bat an eyelid. So I feel the role is replaceable that way. Having said that I'm incredibly glad it was Denzel Washington, because to be honest I'm getting sick of Liam Neeson's Taken # 124 type roles, despite my fondness for him.

    Chris, I agree that Denzel's character (Robert) needed more backstory to justify the degree of violence he was able to put out. I don't think that the Saw/Home Alone scenes were out of place because if we leave the backstory to the viewer's imagination then we can assume that Robert once worked in an environment that was surrounded by death including that of his wife whom he promised would not return to that line of work. Working at a (Home Depot) normal job is pretty boring and in order to get more out of it, Robert chose to improve the lives of his co-workers and he most likely imagined really cool ways to kill people when his mind idled at work. Could this movie have included more scenes yes, but as an audience member, I can sympathize with boredom and it was awesome that he got the chance to creatively execute his foes at his normal job.

    I don’t want to criticise but it was something I caught on to with the first and second movies. A particular question he asked in both was what do you see when you look at me. I think the over the top violence is who he is and saying just because he looked sane doesn’t mean he is actually sane. The blank but intense look in his face doesn’t give off anything which is great about his character as there is that thought of does he enjoy doing this? Is it his way of releasing something? It’s the mystery that allows us to try and dig deeper into his psychological perspective.

Not really sure what made you to give it a B- , A brilliant actor , awesome pace , excellent dialogues , mind blowing action and indisputable camera work.. what more you want. Also, personally I did not expect you using the P word for the young lady who acted in the movie opposite Denzel , i would rather use the word forced sex worker.

  • @austinboucher5286
    @austinboucher5286 2 роки тому +1

    Most of Chris’ criticism could be answered with a simple comment-it’s an action movie. Why wouldn’t the violence be over the top? Ever seen a Schwarzenegger movie? Ever seen the Robocop films? You just can’t take it too seriously. Furthermore, we don’t need to know much about Denzel’s character in the same way we don’t need to know about Clint Eastwood’s Man with no name in the Dollars trilogy. We know his character, his principles and his abilities, and that’s all we need to know. It also adds a lot of mystique to his character, and frankly I don’t think he’d be nearly as interesting if we knew more. That’s partly why I don’t think the second film is as interesting since it tries to answer questions about the Equalizer that we really don’t need answered. As for “unnecessary violence”, it’s not nearly as gruesome or over the top as standard action films like the Rambo, Dirty Harry, or the Death wish films. Just watch Commando, where Arnold Schwarzenegger pretty much mows down and blows up an entire island full of people. Point is, this’s pretty standard action fare. Complaining about unnecessary violence in an action movie is like complaining about too much sex in a porno.

    1:00 - My thought, stopping right there, "OH, don't tell me he's gonna feel like protecting her?". Video's still paused.
    Just being honest with you guys, and after Leon: The Professional tried so hard to be some Taxi Driver 2...

    just from watching the trailer i got a weird feeling about this movie. he says "i told someone who i loved id never go back to being that person" but let one prostitute get beat up and "oh its time to go back to being that person and forget that thing i told the person i loved.

    Just watched it. You could take 20-25min of it to make it great, but it is a fun movie. B- is fair.

    Strangely enough I actually appreciated scenes like the ones where he's in work and helping the dude lose weight. To me it felt less like they only put it in to humanize him but like they also added it to show that his life isn't just black and white. He isn't just that weirdo old dude always checking the time and eating at the same place, bringing his own tea to a diner and basically being tied down to routine in the most anal way. He does have his more normal moments too and he has a life and friends. I think otherwise I might have seen him as an entirely different character because I'd only see the violent and sometimes almost ex-military behaviour. The elaborate traps, kills, and the fact that he killed with everything but a gun added to the strangeness of him. Just my two cents though

    I Enjoyed the movie very highly, and TBH i am glad that they didn't give anything away about Denzel's character, i am sick of movies explaining everything, the mystery and hints of what The character might be, are far more interesting than a full fledged answer IMO, If i had any problems with the film, it did feel a little long, but aside from that I had fun 3.5/ 5

    I am surprised u didn't pickup on the fact the Denzel's character is ocd. It's there if u pay attention to the little things he does.

    Well the title says Equalizer. The Russian Mobsters are ruthless and extreme and so is Robert. He is the counterbalance. So it not unnessecary over-the-top violence. They have destroyed many human lives and so he destroys everything from them. I really like this movie. Great score, great Denzel Washington, good vilain played by Marton Csokas and great action. Specially that oil tanker scene is awesome.

    It was just a solid film. Not bad, not AMAZING. Sometimes overly stylistic for no reason, but it's nothing you need to run out to the movies to see. I think most people will go into this movie and expect a Taken type of vibe and be disappointed. Just save your money for John Wick. It looks like the type of "man against the world" movie that everyone was expecting The Equalizer to be.

    I enjoyed it but really thought it felt longer than 2 hours, I do think it dragged but it was fun! I can't deny that I was slightly disappointed, I expected a tiny bit more than what we got- I totally agree on your character point of him being a blank canvas, it bugged me too, and for some reason it only dawned on me during the drive home, that I had learnt less than nothing about the character haha! Cool review!

    I personally liked the fact that they didn't tell you anything about his character. I hate in movies where they do the cliched exposition where one character is talking about how he was the best agent, or best special ops soldier or whatever. I like that you don't know who this guy is or what he is capable of. And I like how that drives the villain crazy.

    Denzel Washington I'd sum up as a much better version of Tom Cruise: Action star that kinda plays the same guy in every film but is still intense and effective in the process.

    The part with melissa leo perhaps didn't need to be omitted but her language should really change. If you can look past it, this movie easily makes movie of the year. As you can tell, I felt it accomplished what it was supposed to do as a movie, which is move me.
