@@joeandrews7329 I love how they repeated this trend with the villain in Fully Loaded. He starts off reasonably normal but a bit self centred and narcissistic and then by the end, everyone thinks he’s crazy and obsessed over just a car 😂
@@Snowfang00andco Yeah, but what I didn't like about that movie was how the premise kind of goes in the opposite direction as the original. In the original Love Bug, it was obviously about Herbie and how the car was great. In Fully Loaded, it tried to hard to sell Lindsay Lohan's character, Maggie. Plus, the original kept the premise within believability, whereas Fully Loaded added more absurd premises to the movie. To be fair, maybe it just comes from being a NASCAR fan for years, so I know Herbie would never pass pre-tech, but it feels like the movie was playing with matches by putting NASCAR into the movie.
Defiantly. I agree with you there, he has to be one of the most memorable characters in this movie and yes we need more villains like this nowadays, the older movies were filled with so much heart and here I am a 13 year old that even knows that.
I also thought in the sequel, Alonzo Hawk was pretty funny as the evil real estate developer. I always remember the scene where Herbie was so angry he broke into Hawk's office and chased him around! Hilarious.
You forgot another line from when after Jim comes storming into Mister Thorndyke's showroom, irate, after his first drive with Herbie. "Get Mister Douglas and his acquisition out of here before I lose my temp-ER!!!"
Thorndyke wasn't out-and-out evil like so many villains...he was one of those villains you couldn't help but laugh at. His angry reactions were hilarious. The same went for Alonzo Hawk (Keenan Wynn) in Herbie Rides Again.
My twin sister watching "The Love Bug" as a 25 year old on TV, and at his introduction, she said "it's the dad from Mary Poppins". Beautiful how David Tomlinson could just play the same character with the same clothes/personality, and can just make it either a hero, villain or a painfully under-stressed but misguided parent figure which still come out just as *purely* engaging. He, in my opinion, deserves at least a statue/plaque at all the Disney parks/studios. The same goes for Robert Stevenson also.
David Tomlinson should have done more Disney Films. I could see him in Babes In Toyland, Pete's Dragon, Robin Hood, Pollyanna, The Happiest Millionaire, Basil The Great Mouse Detective, The Aristocrats and the Witch Mountain Films. He was so good Disney should have brought him back time and again. Shame he retired when he did as I could see him also later as part of Mel Brooks' team as well as his own comical detective series later on. Loved him. One of a kind. Truly missed.
Guy is from Basil Fawlty's bloodline!! He is a tall, somewhat skinny British chap with a thin mustache, short temper, and a pleasant "nice guy" facade. He has a loyal yet somewhat incompetent sidekick whose name he yells out in anger and frustration at times.
Havershaw, I shan’t pretend that I don’t know what you’re thinking. However, I pride myself on being a good judge of character. And when I ask myself, “ Could this man be capable of such an act of pettiness and base- (Ah, shut up) -base ingratitude...” I accept that as your answer.
And here I thought Mr. George Banks and Professor Emilius Browne were jerks despite only temporary ones but Peter Thorndyke is the real jerk in the end.

David Tomlinson's character Peter Thorndyker made me laugh when I watched this as a kid in the 80's. R.I.P David Tomlinson, Dean Jones and Buddy Hackett.
As much as I loved David Tomlinson as Peter Thorndyke, it doesn’t beat the love I had for him, as George Banks, in Mary Poppins. We’ll always fly a kite with him, in our memories. 😇🪁☁️ Or we’ll always have a unique bank outing with him and Dick Van Dyke as Mr. Dawes Sr. 🤣

yes that actor is quite funny in this movie
i seen Mary Poppins
I LOVE David Tomlinson! He was also comedically brilliant in "Bedknobs & Broomsticks", too!
yes indeed he was
He is also Lord Fellamar in the Samuel Goldwyn/United Artists' Academy Award winning film, TOM JONES.
Only three actors that I can think of that can play sincere comedic hysteria. Richard Dreyfus, Tom Hanks and David Thomlinson. So funny!
