Blackout curtains were used in countries under attack to block any lights they had on that could be used by enemy bombers to target their bombs.

There’s a book I read last year called When Paris Went Dark that goes into great detail on the Nazi occupation of the city. It talks a lot about how Parisians essentially became strangers in their own city almost overnight. Suddenly, the streets became unnerving and people became mistrustful. There was also a lot of pent up guilt and frustration over the fact that the city was conquered without a fight, and the French felt emasculated at the sight of their conquerers living in their homes, sleeping with their women and controlling their lives.

There is a videogame, The Saboteur, that's set in occupied Paris. It plays sort of like "GTA meets Assassin's Creed in WWII," but it does show some of what the French went through, as seen through the eyes of an Irish racing driver that joins the French resistance.

As I've said, add Armchair Historian's military uniforms history videos. They seriously are fascinating! They've got a video on Russian uniforms, English, German, US, and I think Japan, as well.

Sad enough France's occupation was rather tame compared to Yugoslavia, Russia and Poland.

Don't be too harsh on yourself about not knowing much history, one really needs to decide to dig deeper and study in depth. History classes in primary and secondary schools can only pick at the surface. Of course so many history teachers present their lessons in boring way.
