  • THE SONGBIRD: Elsa Dreisig was born in Paris in 1991, the daughter of the Danish opera singer Inge Dreisig and the French singer, conductor, and director Gilles Ramade. She sang in the children's choirs of the opera houses in Liege and Lyon, then studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and at the University of Music in Leipzig. In 2015, Dreisig joined the opera studio in Berlin, leading to a permanent engagement, appearing as Gretel, Pamina, Violetta, Euridice, and Dircé. She was a top winner in several prominent competitions (Neue Stimmen, Queen Sonja Competition, and Operalia). She has performed in the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Paris, Zürich, London, Salzburg, and Hamburg in roles that include Bellini's Elvira, Salome (in French), Thais, Manon, Musetta, Zerlina, Donna Elvira, and Fiordiligi.
THE MUSIC: Mozart's opera seria "Idomeneo" premiered in Munich in January 1781 with a libretto adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French play. It only a had a few performances in Mozart's lifetime, but has been staged regularly in the modern era. The opera has two soprano roles -- Ilia and Elettra -- which were sung by sisters-in-law Dorothea Wendling and Elisabeth Wendling at the premiere. Although Elettra is known for her unhinged and conniving behavior, Mozart gives her "Idol mio," a sublime aria in Act Two I which she imagines winning over Idamante with intimacy while he escorts her via ship back to Argos. Her aria segues into a gorgeous scene in the manner of a barcarolle with chorus to praise the calm seas before they set sail.
