  • Not all stereotypes are created equal. In fact, psychological scientists have developed a model that describes the content of stereotypes toward different social groups. This model is known as the Stereotype Content Model, abbreviated “SCM,” and it proposes that the content of stereotypes varies along two dimensions: competence and warmth. Let’s explore those dimensions as well as some of the predictions that stem from the model.
Stereotype Content Model (or SCM): A model that seeks to describe the content of stereotypes toward different social groups; proposes that stereotypes vary along two dimensions (competence and warmth).
    Competence (or C): Capability, assertiveness.
    Warmth (or W): Friendliness, trustworthiness.
Envious Prejudice: Prejudice associated with envy and jealousy; typically directed toward HC-LW (high competence, low warmth) social groups.
Paternalistic Prejudice: Prejudice associated with pity and sympathy; typically directed toward LC-HW (low competence, high warmth) social groups.
Contemptuous Prejudice: Prejudice associated with anger and resentment; typically directed toward LC-LW (low competence, low warmth) social groups.
