I live in TN and have a Liftmaster LA412 with 2 batteries and a solar panel. For some reason the solar panel is putting out 20 volts, but it isn't charging the batteries. There's a spot on the board for a 110V battery charger, so I ran electric to the gate, bought a $10 battery tender off eBay. I plugged it in the it's been working ever since. I'll remove the solar panel soon.

As cheap as solar panels are, I suggest upgrading solar panel and battery at time of purchase. . Why go with 10 watt solar panel and 14 ah agm type battery (7 ah available) when you can go to 50 watt and 20 ah lithium. Which can utilize close to 100% of it's capacity. The solar panel can keep up with charging while the battery can carry load for long periods week no sun. And if you add accessories that draw power, the battery setup will already be big enough.

Thank you for your feed back. This video was made before solar panel prices are as cheap as they are today. We do normally use 40Watt solar panels and a 14Ah AGM battery. The 14Ah is available so long as it isn't drawn more than 30% on a regular bases then is will last almost as long as a Lithium Battery for 1/3rd the price. Lithium batteries can be drawn down to 80% capacity on a regular basis without shortening their lifespan and are much lighter, which make them ideal for electric cars but for gates, weight isn't so much of a concern, where as price is.

You need to scale the solar panel and battery depending on your climate. You will need to check your local area for gates prices.
