"This is a world that is not so pleasant. It is a world that is a mix of sort of Red Bull, MTV, and Orwell, and if you're looking at this Networked Digital once every 6.7 minutes, the construction of the world that exists in your mind is going to overlap heavily with this amalgam of Red Bull, MTV, and Orwell." Wow, what an apropos description of social media! I've never heard it described quite like this, and it hits home.

I remember sitting in a trailer house with about 10 other dudes watching MTV in 1980. It was just non-stop music videos, at that time.I had a moment when I thought they were all zombies, and this was NOT GOOD! 😄 Cal seems too young to have experienced that.

@@nitin_puranik pointing out hypocrisy is an act of love, not hate. Newport’s puritanical approach to social media is best viewed as poetry, not a sincere practice since he regularly posts on UA-cam(here we are talking, this is social media). I don’t expect him to be flawless, his work isn’t Gospel. But both he and his audience would be better served if he would stop pretending that he doesn’t use social media and stick to what works when it comes to productivity.

I'm not on Facebook and I don't have Instagram or TikTok on my Jelly Star phone. BUT I'm watching UA-cam on my tablet several hours a day, and can't stop. I watch "educational" videos on science, tech, self improvement etc. and I never watch reels or prank videos or such.

Cal, I like the new body metaphor. The “C Buckets” seem to be a little stretched to fit the alliteration.
I propose that you bring exercise into the “feet” at 42:14 . Maybe “Where you go.” Meant to represent how you express yourself in physical space. Where you live and what do you do there. I value living somewhere that I can walk to work to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The two books I have out now are Slow Productivity and Nature's Temples: The Complex World of Old-Growth Forests, you might appreciate the latter Cal. I think it probably has many metaphors for slow productivity. It's funny, the book covers are very similar :)

Hey Cal, You dismissed the need of meditation such as Sam Harris' podcast. You said you dont need to meditate if your waking hours dont have as much stimulus. But this is not the reason for meditation. Sam Harris' reason for meditation is not mere calming of the mind after a frantic day. No. Is is much much mire spiritual than that. Before judging others and there ideas on your assumptions, try to read a bit of what they are writing or saying. I wrote off sam harris becuz of your comment on some episode. Years later i found myself keep pointing to harris' practice. His ideas are much more profound than what you assume.

Western ethics aren’t purely Jewish, Plato and Aristotle and profound impacts on Agustine and Aquinas. Reading a book on Jewish (or more broadly, Ancient Israelite) ethics is kind of like only looking at one of your parents’ family histories for a medical review, or maybe even only one of your grandparents.

@@joshuairwin3385 1. Most AI art has the "AI art look", which usually looks odd, creepy, uncanny. It's a big turn-off for a lot of people. 2. It then also gives a poor association to the UA-cam content creator who is using the art. Now I think of Cal Newport as the kind of person who wants to use AI art and thinks this look good. Fair or not, I look at him slightly differently now. I don't think I'm alone in this. AI art has a big ick-factor.

@@mjpond I think you're alone in this. Just because the man uses AI as a tool for creative purposes doesn't detract from the value of his core message, which is minimizing time on social media. If you're in the "avoid AI camp, no matter what", you're going to be left behind, I assure you.
