    I noticed you have stakes in your garden , one tip i might give you is to put a shuttlecock or a bottle top on top of the stake. This prevents knocking or damaging your eyes when weeding, nice garden by the way, i have gone mad on coneflowers since i first saw your videos.

    So glad to hear you tell your husband that he’s not funny. Seems husbands senses of humor, especially about hard worked gardens, are universally not funny. And, I love the color palette. There is no combination that doesn’t work if the plants are lush and thriving as yours are. It is gorgeous in every way. Rejoice in the end result.

    Absolutely stunning gardens. You are extremely beautiful and your hubby so complimentary which is just so nice to hear. When do we cut back the the flowers in fall or spring? Is it true we cut just inches from ground? I’ve spent a-lot on plants and want to make sure they return. I’m in zone 7a.

    • @GuidingGreenThumbs
      @GuidingGreenThumbs  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Susan! I cut back in late Fall because my gardens are so crammed with plants. If I don’t cut back and cleanup a little, I have bad pest infestations the following year because they tend to overwinter in the dead debris and foliage. It’s a pest management thing for me But you can choose to do it in either spring or fall. If you cut back In the fall, I would leave about 3” of stems so you know where to look for the plant the following year in the spring. In the spring same thing… leave a little so you know where to expect the new growth. If you see new growth happening you can cut the dead stems as far back as you can.

    • @GuidingGreenThumbs
      @GuidingGreenThumbs  2 роки тому

      Well, I pruned it in the spring… was not happy as the existing canes that I kept died back some so it’s in sort of a recovery mode at the moment. I also have a huge Joe Pye Weed that has taken center stage and shaded it a bit this year so it’s still there, still growing back but not a lot of flowers… partly from pruning, partly from being shaded. Such a bummer!

    I like that you leave heads of plants for birds to visit. I felt like I toured your gardens also.

    Aim for 20% of you square footage to be occupied by grasses. In a small garden such as yours better to choose one species, or one cool season species and one warm season species.
    Calamagrostis KarlFoester and Panicum ApacheRose
    They will “ground” the planting, and knit it into a whole.
    Also, try to discipline yourself to one color per species. The echinacea, for example, since you like the saturated color of Sombrero BajaBurgundy the best. But it may not be as sturdy and longer lived a choice as PurpleEmperor which gives you the much needed height as well.
    Rose Fellowship will deliver a season long bloom, and a beautiful orange to the planting. You will never regret planting this very special rose. Perfect for those of us who like saturated color.

      I appreciate your feedback, I love the variations of coneflowers… size, height, colors… they all play into what I love so much about this garden. I do have a small garden and have tried switch grasses but they need to be managed every year and I just choose to keep that garden to minimal divisions as it’s pretty stuffed. The grasses tended to get too big too quick every year. We have zebra and maiden grasses behind the cottage garden where they can get big and fill in without interruption… 😊Will check out the Rose you mention, sounds perfect!
