This illustrates how incredibly dangerous a nighttime tornado can be.
I can't stop thinking about how terrifying that is. The fact that you can't even see it coming.
@@octi9465 the way the world is going every house should be tornado proof
Especially in Kentucky. With no lights Kentucky is ink black.
@@octi9465 it baffles me that most people don't invest in a shelter in tornado country, it's the first thing I did when moving to Northern Alabama.
@@buto1542 they actually are. Stone houses are quite popular in other parts of the world
The most terrifying part of night tornadoes is the fact that the darkness doesn’t allow you to know where it’s at, bear in mind due to thunder, rain and wind it sounds as if it’s all around you. This one was rain wrapped too making it even worse. RIP to all the souls who lost their lives that night. I hope they’re resting peacefully and they’re family gets support during this difficult time.
I disagree. I personally believe the most terrifying part of a night tornado is that the darkness doesn't allow you to know where it is.
I disagree with both of you. For me, not knowing where it is would be the scariest thing out of anything else
I disagree with all 3 of you, I honestly believe that not knowing where a tornado is because it’s dark is the most terrifying thing
All of you have made some good points on why this tornado was something to be feared especially. What I found the most scary though (and none of you said this) is that the darkness doesn't allow you to know where it is.
This is old italy tornado footage.
This is why storm chasers are essential. Especially night tornadoes. They are the ones who see, know and report. Thanks to all.

@@EmmaDeFazio5938 I would say earthquake. It can cause just as much property damage as a tornado, but unlike earthquakes, tornadoes don't effect the earth itself

Just jaw dropping looking at it, this is one December tornado outbreak that will never be forgotten.
It'll be forgotten - welcome to the new normal.
@Dek Gmail You could be right but saying it's not the new normal is just ignoring historical data in weather patterns. You don't really gain much by ignoring data everybody can see. If you want it to stop, do your part.
Unless this is our new normal.
The heated up atmosphere is jet fuel for these storms. This twister stayed on the ground for some 280 miles -- a record breaker. In hurricane Ida more people got killed in my state -- New Jersey -- then those who were expected to lose their lives in Louisiana. We even had a tornado that destroyed homes. We are in uncharted territory. There are no guarantees against a repeat and intensifying of these events. Do what you can to be safe. Avoid flood zones, etc. As far as I'm concerned, "Tornado Alley" is now practically anywhere. The claim is that it's shifting eastward.
@@anitasmith4559 Really? That's interesting to know. I hadn't yet heard that, about it shifting east. Hey, y'all... while it's tempting to say "We'll gladly share tornado alley with you", truth is, we know how scary they can be!

I've been in a nighttime tornado. January 2nd 2017 in Albany, Georgia. To say it was terrifying is an understatement. Our home took a direct hit. We didn't know which way it was heading towards us but we heard it before it hit.
Praying for all our citizens who are suffering. If you can please donate to a local charity. 🇺🇸
Glad to hear you alive but how big was that tornado 🌪️ you experience compare to this one?
I was also there it was crazy
@@cs77smith67 Thank you. The one that hit us was an F-1. It wasn't strong but it went through mostly residential areas. Albany is filled with South Georgia pines. When they come down they take out your roof and two other neighbor's roof.
I live in the historic district called Rawson Circle. My home was built in 1929. She's a brick Tudor revival. She took a hell of a beating but we were able to repair the house. My Titan was totalled and my Hyundai Genesis GT coupe had $12,000 in damages to repair it. It took about a year.
The worst part is 20 days later another bigger tornado hit Albany. It was an F-4 rain wrapped. It killed people. There's videos of that tornado on UA-cam. It was pure deviation.
There's video of the aftermath of the January 2nd 2017 on UA-cam. A lot of drone footage.

The shot at 00:57 is just wow
Tornadoes at night always scared me as a kid. Still do, especially since I don’t have a basement anymore.
How do you take shelter then
@@davidwalker20 Basically, we don't. I live in southeastern MO, and over the years I've lived in houses with and without a basement. I'm now living in an old 800 sq ft log cabin. It's been here for many years, and still standing strong. So my best chance is to lie flat on the floor, under my desk, in the middle of the "great room", where I'll be away from windows. While KY was being pulverized by the tornadoes, we were experiencing monsoon-like rain that was being blown sideways. And yes, it's scary when our tornado siren goes off.
@@pamprier4710 it’s even more scary when it’s night time and they’re going off
Same. No basement, no interior rooms and bathroom upstairs. That's why when there are tornado warnings I am outside looking for it and my husband is on opposite side of house also looking. We have kids that we corale in downstairs living room while we look for tornado, no choice. Told them to get into closet under stairs if we yell for them to do so. Couple close calls where one took out chunks of the school that is real close to where we live but nothing like what Kentucky went through! That was a MONSTER tornado. Been through hurricanes and even the Virginia earthquake but tornadoes scare me the most.
@@vaskylark Man no wonder people die during these tornadoes...
Reminds me of that scene in Twister when the tornado hit the cinema gas station in the middle of the night
It really looks menacing and horrific. Daytime tornadoes look crazy dangerous, but having this at night? I can't even imagine. It's beyond. Sending prayers to all those affected.
Thank you to all of you recording these photos. It may help others become more prepared to shelter if and when warned to do so.
Where do you shelter when a monster is bearing down on you? The houses and buildings were flattened. No interior room is going to save you. Where I live we don't have a basement, nor any interior rooms and the bathrooms are on the second level. Night tornadoes scare me the most because I have kids. Honestly, there was not much these people could do. They were sitting ducks.
@@vaskylark I know it cost more, but people should invest in reinforced concrete houses "if they can". Strong typhoons come and go where I live so it's definitely a must.
@@vesta1000 I live on the coast in hurricane alley if there was such a thing, so I agree, but our house is not concrete it's wood and siding, and I'm pretty sure the HOA would not let us reinforce a house in concrete. Is that even a thing?
@@vaskylarkYou can do alot of things to prepare your family for tornadoes. Before you even say, I absolutely know that everyone cannot afford tornado shelters. That being said new homes that are built, either have tornado rooms or shelters built in the garages. I also know some of my friends have built safe rooms in their house that is surrounded by cement with rebar. Most of them are a closet or bathroom. Alot of older homes is their area home tornado shelters buried under ground just outside of the house. I live about 25 miles from Monette, Arkansas where the tornado destroyed the nursing home. I thank God I saw no damage at my house...🙏🙏🙏
No way should they be chasing tornadoes at night. Way too dangerous. Radar is good enough to inform the public of where the tornado threat is at night.
That little girl, the one who hid in her bath tub.. i just cant imagine what terror she was in.

A lot of storms don't unnerve me. I lived in Missouri for 19 years and just moved away here in July. Watching this video and going "Hey....I know that road..." is a very unnerving feeling. Thankfully nobody I knew was hurt, injured, or lost property, though I cannot say the same for others in my former community. This is unnerving to see, and hits really deep, because Hayti used to be my home.
This passed right through a town, 25miles from where my parents live. It killed 70+ people in their sleep. They are rating it a category EF-5!
@@jordanohealy1507 Didn't it hit somewhere between 5:30 and 8::30 pm?

Not me. The earthquake in Utah last year was enough for me. I'd take a tornado any day if I had to pick. Least with tornadoes you have some warning.
