  • In this video I talk you through my design and build for an internal DIY moving bed biological filter for my koi pond grow on tank!
I spent a fair amount of time researching and watching many hours of UA-cam videos on diy moving bed bio filters (my wife thinks there’s something wrong with me, and I’d tend to agree lol). I’ve based this design on a supersized internal aquarium MBF.
For the main filter I used a plastic storage container from B&M, a couple of drain pipe fittings from Wickes and a couple of air stones and some pipe that came with my air pump. For the media I used 10l of K1 and 1l of K+ which I bought just to see how different if was to K1 lol. Total cost including the media was around £35/£40.
My aim was to have a filter that was within the tank rather than in a separate container, which I think I’ve achieved. Time will tell if it works or not!! Wish me luck lol.
I’ll upload another video once the media has matured and will give it an honest review. I’ve also got a video in the works where I do a comparison between Evolution Aqua’s K1, K+ and K1 micro, so please subscribe if you’d like to see those when they’re finished!
    Thanks for tuning in!
    Chaz.

Thank you! Glad your liking the vids 👍🏻 this seems to be working ok at the moment! The media has started to churn and the water also seems to be cycling through ok as well which is cool 😎 :)

Ah that’s great, I’m really pleased you’ve found them helpful :) if you’ve got any questions please let me know 👍🏻 I’ve got a few more videos in the works including how I’ve plumbed it all in and also adding a heater so if there’s anything in particular you’d like me to cover, just leave me a comment 👍🏻

Good idea but how do you clean the filter out

Hey Tommy! I shouldn’t need to.. this is just for biological filtration. The grid where the water enters the bottom has got holes that should be large enough to let any waste/dirt pass straight through into the box. The holes in the top where the water exits the box are bigger than the grid so any waste that does get inside should also flow straight out. Also, the churning of the media should break down any solids so, again, it should just flow straight out 👍🏻 I’m going to do an update video in a couple of weeks, so keep your eye out for that :) The media has now started to mature and it’s all moving around nicely 😃

Chaz are you also using a box filter of some sort

Yes mate. 👍🏻 I have an allpondsolutions pressure filter that is fed off of the outlet at the bottom of the tank which does the mechanical filtration. It also has a built in UV. I’ve got a bit behind with my editing lol so I have a video I’ll be posting shortly if how all of that is plumbed in :) Also, I intentionally mounted this bio filter quite high in the tank so as to minimise any sediment getting pulled into it. So far it seems to be ok, and there’s no build up of dirt inside it, so fingers crossed it stays that way lol. If I did need to clean it out though it would be a bit of a faff but easily doable. I’d just need to cut and then replace a dozen or so cable ties. Are you considering doing something similar??

Yeah pal as a grow on tank some of my tosai are falling behind in size they have to compete with me bigger lads love you're idea for insulation cheers pal
