Great video. I have two Dunes. One is a late 90s MM paperback with typesetting so small it strains my eyes. The other is a first book club edition published by Chilton. It's too beaten up to really have collector's value, but I like having it on the shelf.
Oh wow! Even if its beaten up that still a find! And I hear what you are saying about small font, I’d b inclinded to ditch that oen and get one with bigger font- but that’s just me
Last year, I went though my library and tried to replace my favorite mass market paperbacks with hardcovers--I really love to read hardcovers! We need hardcover reprints of the rest of the Dune series, the original Dragonriders of Pern books, and Harry Turtledove's Videssos/Misplaced Legion series. There were also several cases where I had to track down the original Science Fiction Book Club omnibuses--the first three Ender books, the first three Majipoor books (Robert Silverberg). I did successfully replace my Discworld library, a handful of books at a time, but am saving the already replaced once paperbacks as travel copies. I haven't saved many of the other replaced books.
I've just checked, and I don't have any duplicates (not even Dune). Except, I have Kindle copies of my top 10 SF novels just in case something happens to my physical copy. And, because they're always on my Kindle and iPad, I can read those again at any time, wherever I happen to be.
we are opposites on book format preference. I love the vintage mass market paperbacks and don't like those big, floppy boys they call trade paperbacks.
Hah I love that you have accidental doubles you haven't read. I try to keep up to date pictures of my bookshelves on my phone so I don't do that, but when it does they leave quick, shelf space is at a premium! I pretty much only keep or collect duplicates for my couple very favorite authors.
Dune: Ratty 90's paperback, minimalist small art hardcover, and a Pennington paperback. One to read, one to replace the reader and one to stay nice in a bag with stunning art. Your Hardcover is stunning. Lord of the Rings too. My 90's cheese paperbacks are lost somewhere in my parents house. I have your cheese 1984 too
1984, Oryx and Crake, The Handmaid's Tale, Leviathan Wakes, Dune, A Song of Ice and Fire (all 5 books), The Man in the High Castle......all were intentional doublings. I probably have a few more (definitely if I include my Kobo ereader) but can't think of them off the top of head.
I have duplicates of a LOT of books. Sometimes accidentally but often on purpose. The two authors I particularly collect multiple editions of are Jane Austen and Rick Riordan... I have a lot of those. Especially Pride and Prejudice editions.
Have that paperback of Dune which looks really strange next to my dad's 1970s Children and Messiah. I do have multiple copies of LotR. Mainly because I love the older covers. What is really frustrating is trade paper backs now come in about 6 different sizes making a very odd looking shelf.
I have actually never owned (nor read) Dune. The only double I currently have on my shelf is Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey. And it happened by accident. I didn't remember that I had purchased one and at a library book sale bought another. I have replaced my Anne of Green Gables and Pride and Prejudice when the originals fell apart. But I did not keep the originals.
You are so much more organized than me! Way to be! Totally understandable to replace versions that fall apart, but wow that is impressive to read them or have them long enough to fall apart!
Lion the witch and the wardrobe, enders game, and a couple chuck Palahniuk books. The first two are bought doubles for a book club the Palahniuk books are because I'm a fan and wanted alternate covers
I was going to ask, "Who is that woman placing books on your shelf?!". I have 3 copies of DUNE. 2 copies of The Stand (original paperback and Updated 1990 hardback). Mass market Something Wicked This Way Comes and a folio edition. Mass market : I cannot stand them and want to get back to Fire Upon the DEEP, but I hate reading/holding the thing. 1Q84: I own the large paperback. I was reading the library copy, but the "individual" who had the book previously wrote in it which drove me nuts. I bought the Vintage paperback and would buy a folio edition in a heartbeat.
I havent gotten around to 19Q4 yet. And i own the tor essentials trade paperback of fire upon the deep, which I high recommend- esp if mass market is bothering you!! They just came out (like this month) with tor essentials trade paperback of deepness in the sky too!!!
Interesting that you buy a book and don't read it till later if ever. As for my doubles, it usually happens if it has a different cover since I have a good visual memory and will recognize a cover I already have without reference to the title. Since I buy my books to read, I don't replace them with a new version if it just has a fancy cover etc. I will buy a replacement a book if it is falling apart and I enjoy rereading it. Technically a double. I also bought Dune when it was first published and everyone was raving about how great it was. I dove in but gave up after a while, found it too dry (groan) to read.
Wow i envy that memory of yours. I didnt remember what I had bought, but hope to improve in future…. As for dune, i know many people would encourage you to try it again, but with the movie so accessible and also the knowledge that book isnt for everyone-- dont feel pressured. There are so many good books out there waiting to b read
The Forever War. Evidently earlier versions of the book were slightly abridged, per the publisher. Newer editions contain the larger story, the way Halderman intended. Edit: I have three if you count ebook as well.
I have two copies of the Stand, one well read paperback and I was gifted the expanded hard back. It really changes your appearance when you take your glasses off, not a criticism either way just an observation.
I have multiple copies of several C J Cherryh books, PB, HB, Special Editions and Kindle. Many of them signed. I have two copies of the first edition paperback of Star Wars, the one published before the movie came out. I bought the first one several months before the movie and the second one year's later at a library sale. It hurts to hear you don't like mass market paperbacks...I have over a thousand that I will never get rid of even if the print is hard for me to read.
Signed Cherryh!! And original star wars! Thats amazing!! As for mass market paperbacks, more for you I guess :) luckily your collection is way more formidable than my wntire collection. I just started a few years ago
Heh, i don't actually own any doubles of books on my shelves. Only a few accidental double buys i have done are comics and i think it's only one or two of copies.
I've got a few Edgar Allan Poe editions myself - not entirely sure as I'm not a huge fan, or read that much of him yet, but I appreciate his importance and I really like the covers on the selections of Horror, or Sci-fi, or Mystery (much better then my hardcover complete works, that is nice enough but only has generic repeated illustrations), plus I never know about the unique forwards in each edition, I suppose I should read them all. At least I'm committing to Poe today because I want to watch Mike Flannigan's show and get all the references. I also have 3 editions of the Hobbit, each being uniquely illustrated, and one in french to help me learn that language, and the graphic novel version if we count that, and two versions of books on tape I've had all my life if we count those (one's a radio play actually). I don't have a lot of multiples generally, but I make exceptions for _my precious._
I only have one edition of The Hobbit currently but I have 3 of LOTR. That will change before too long though since I do want to get the recent illustrated Hobbit to match the LOTR and Silmarillion copies I already have...
@@RosLanta Yeah that looks like a worthy one, and while I don't actually have one with Tolkien's art within, I do have all that printed in an art book, so I probably don't _really_ need that one. hehe I've got the Allan Lee all in one hardcover which is very heavy, and would like to get them as three separate books. I've also got a French copy of Fellowship with some unique cool art, I just need to find the other two...and get better at French.
@@secretsauceofstorycraft I know I like masque of the red death and the Raven, I just need to go beyond, only he's a bit of effort sometimes with his vocabulary and Latin.
Two copies of WE Zamyatin hoping it was a different translation(nope). One copy of dune. If I get a dupe I usually keep the better version and donate the other.
I end up with doubles because I’m old and senile and I buy way too many books.
Nah…. Thats not a thing! Haha
Same.
Makes it easier to get the best cover
Great video. I have two Dunes. One is a late 90s MM paperback with typesetting so small it strains my eyes. The other is a first book club edition published by Chilton. It's too beaten up to really have collector's value, but I like having it on the shelf.

I agree that we need to see more hardcover reprints of older books. I also prefer reading hardcovers.
Wow 🤩 i think you are right with having books available in many editions. The worst is when the book you want is out of print…
I've just checked, and I don't have any duplicates (not even Dune). Except, I have Kindle copies of my top 10 SF novels just in case something happens to my physical copy. And, because they're always on my Kindle and iPad, I can read those again at any time, wherever I happen to be.
You are so much more organized than I am! I’m jealous. But It is smart to have your top 10 in multiple versions
"Who doesn't own more than one version of Dune"... Accurate. I have two. The Penguin Galaxy edition and a Waterstones special edition.
🔥
You’re right about Dune! I bought a copy, but then I received another one as a gift. I love the last one because it’s illustrated.
Illustrated!?! Uhh, I’m have to go see if I can find that version…. i’m a sucker for illustrated versions…
we are opposites on book format preference. I love the vintage mass market paperbacks and don't like those big, floppy boys they call trade paperbacks.
Hey this works out! I’ll swap u my mass markets andnu give me trades. Bam 💥 perfect!

Wow that is an incredible system….
Used to have double copies of Michael Crichton (paperback 1st) but started to buy hardcovers of all his books. I donated the paperback a while back.

The God's Themselves is a real mind bender.
I look forward to it!
Three copies of Good Omens. A reader copy, a first edition and a spare to give away to the uninitiated
Haha 😂 uninitiated. Love it
I have doubles of all books I own. Paperbacks are for reading and first edition hardcovers are for display. Many, many copies of dune.

As much as ilove trade paperbacks i agree! The diff sizes can make a chaotic shelf!
The Raven might be my favourite poem ever but I haven't read much else from Poe. I would like to at some point.
Would recommend his short stories they would take u just a few hours…..
Fantastic video Whitney. Your videos are always so fun. Andrew loves Poe as well. I'll catch him reciting the Raven in his room sometimes.
Awwww
