Air rights are usually a little different than you've indicated: they are the spaces above existing developed parcels of land. People are buying them because the city continues to densify, which means building up, not out. Therefore when a property is sold and/or redeveloped, both the landowner and the air rights owner must be compensated if the building achieves a certain height. (They almost certainly do for savvy air rights holders, as the local economics of development indicating how many storeys must be built before a profit can be turned are well known in those circles.)
At least one in twenty commentors on this video will freak out about numbers that really don't matter to the overall enjoyment of the video. My estimate is one in four. Don't forget to be awesome, comment section.
One of my favourite facts about New York is that it has the world's oldest subway tunnel, the Cobble Hill Tunnel, and more amusing is that after about 10 years of use it was sealed off and then lost for more than a hundred years!
I loved the old Nabisco factory when I went on a class trip, but now that I'm in broadcasti g, all I can think about is another chance to visit 30 rock!
Growing up in Ny, I have never yet, in all my life, gone to Staten Island. Never. I still consider it part of New Jersey, until they built a subway there.
If you go to Google Maps street view and travel down Forsythe street, there is an orange car parked right in front of a fire hydrant. I would wager this is the one he is talking about.
+AGrayPhantom Did you know the strip isn't actually in Las Vegas, Most major casinos are in an area called Paradise, NV. It was originally incorporated to avoid Las Vegas city taxes.
+AGrayPhantom Fact 1: The casinos, the famous sign and basically everything everyone associates with Las Vegas is in fact not in Las Vega but a separate city called Paradise that was created by the mafia so they could pay less taxes.
P.T. Barnum is said to have done the same elephant trick with Eads Bridge in St. Louis several years earlier (although I believe that was only a single elephant). The elephant trick is supposedly based on an old myth that elephants would not cross an unsound bridge.
My favorite Pizza comes from Luigi's Pizzeria on Dekalb, in Brooklyn. Big slices with the right sauce to bread ratio. Favorite landmark is the 5th Avenue NYPL.
As a fellow (former) Williamsburgian he's absolutely right about Anna Maria's Pizza. Any best of New York list that doesn't include it is demonstrably wrong.
The first graphic you showed for Ellis Island had the Statue of Liberty on it. That island is not Ellis Island, but Liberty Island, north of Ellis Island.
I like to imagine New York's official magician would do topical magic tricks from time-to-time: "And now, ladies and gentlemen, I will make all your money and jobs vanish before your very eyes!" *Does absolutely nothing* "Ta-da!"
La Nostra in East Harlem for the best slice. Not a tourist spot, there's no fancy stuff here just amazing slices. Pizza so good, that for years they didn't need a sign or regular hours and still had a line out the door. But don't worry they have signage and hours now and the pizza is still stellar. Trust me, I'm m a native.
My 10th-great-grandfather, John Denman, came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636 with his mother and siblings and died in 1691 in Long Island. The location of his grave is unknown.
Wallstreet was named after a wall to defend against pirates and now it's the home for pirates.
Please make more of these about different cities like Paris or Tokyo! Thanks for everything, love the show! :)
Favorite landmark is that dead rat at the Franklin St. subway. Iconic
Finally! A good shout out for Staten Island!
I love Mental Floss. Fantastic facts and great production value.

"I prefer LA to New York because of the Hollywood Walk of Fame", said nobody ever.
My favourite place in NYC is the highline! Such pretty art & such a pretty view
It makes me really happy that Mike is hosting this one xD
Good video, though as a New Yorker, I have an issue with recommending Staten Island a nice place to go.
Lmao yaaaas Staten Island is where New York puts people who are good enough to not live in jersey but aren't good enough to be in the city 😂
+soardx1000 When ever we mention going out to Staten Island we start referring it to "going slumming."
+Emma Crawford fuck all of you
you are probably a fucking transplant from the Midwest
Well, that escalated quickly...
One of my favorite movies "A Bronx Tale" was filmed in Astoria Queens.

The place that also sells fried chicken? That place is disgusting!
