Its just sad to think that Cliff Burton probably thought it was any other night at the beginning of his career. This unfortunate night will live in metal history forever, we will all know this as possibly some of the final notes he ever played. Cliffs life is just like an unfinished song... RIP CLIFF
What if he had survived (or their bus had never crashed) and he'd eventually, years down the road, left the band to start one of his own -- a speed/thrash metal equivalent of Thin Lizzy with a bassist as frontman?!

I think they would go more in the direction of pantera in the 90s and become more of a groovy and more of a classical music interpretation of metal and maybe combined the whole groove metal thing to maybe accomodate more classical aspects

Hell even the Lillestrøm/Skedsmohallen solo sounded menacing/dark/foreboding compared to others. Lars defo would have been booted off the band. Believer of fate and multiverse so, he's ripping the 4 string to pieces but in this one, he rests eternally. RIP, Cliff.

You would have to know what the cure is for the specific disease that he died of and know how to administer a treatment tailored to his physiology

3:43 sounds alot like a video of Metallica performing back in 83 with Dave Mustaine, I genuinely never thought I'd hear that in a different performance ever again, so all I can say is I have chills...
I think Burton only played with Mustaine in 3 or 4 shows total. They barely knew each other, but Mustaine would make you think otherwise. Their first show together was in March of 83 and Dave was out that next month.

A great bit of musical bookending. He played that musical bit at his first show with Metallica and his last show. No delay, effects pedals either, just straight up lead bass. Also Corrine, Cliff's girlfriend at the time said Cliff and Dave were still friendly and there's also some pictures of them together post being in Metallica.

If I remember right, he started out in music playing classical piano and was also a big Bach fan, so that baroque touch is definitely a part of his style! To me the end of the first part right before the drums sounds almost like it could’ve been written for organ

One thing about Cliff and this song particularly that I always sortof disliked, but also kindof loved: I have a memory of this song from before the internet and that is what I hear in my head. When I listen to various performances now, I hear Cliff experimenting and playing with freedom how he wants instead of that 'perfect' track in my head. Cliff Burton de alguna manera además de ser un grandísimo bajista, era un gran tipo, muy humilde, algo que carece el rock y más el metal. Por otro lado, no solo era un buen bajista, era un gran bajista de toda escala, te lo dice un amante del jazz y la música clásica, la primera vez que escuché a cliff no sabía dónde encajarlo, es tipo que tranquilamente podría tocar en una banda de jazz o una se rock progresivo. Su marcha tan prematura, y de manera tan fría y escabrosa, pues no se fue se este mundo como tantos músicos, estupefacientes y cosas similares, se fue por un accidente y en una edad extremadamente joven, de alguna forma aquella Metallica quedó en un tiempo aparte, es como si alguien hubiera intervenido en la historia para que eso pasara. Muy desagradable lo de Burton. Por cuestiones de su corta edad no sé si podría ponerlo a la altura de los dioses del bajo, pero estoy seguro que de seguir entre todos nosotros no dudaría en nada que este tipo habría formado su propia banda o tocaría con músicos de otro calibre. The fact that he did the star spangled banner rendition in a similar way to Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock is so sick. You can definitely tell he was influenced by a fantastic variety of musicians, and influenced a whole bunch of them himself. What a guy.

@@adventurousdominic71 Back then you couldn't share your recordings in the 80s. You could only really do it on your television screen with your family and friends. Almost everything recorded wasn't digitally frecorded. The average person would only be able to film instead of digitally recording like we all can do today. Many recordings from the 80s have been lost because you could only store it not save it digitally, which was more likely to be lost than it would digitally. It's very possible someone did film Cliff's last concert but haven't found the tape. And if they did, they haven't bothered to share it online.
Cliff should have played with King Crimson. But I think if he did, he'd have clashed with Robert Fripp. Fripp and Burton are both very active composers, and that can sometimes be challenging when creating a masterpiece. 😅

That was him Pluging in his bass. If you have distortion, turn it on, and THEN plug your bass in, the amp will squeal like that. It happens to me all the time

I’m kinda confused since he didn’t do that in the other live shows cause usually he’d have to turn back to the regular tone for the regular songs literally right after the solo. Newsted and Trujillo are in their own right and way outstanding bass players.......but Cliff was at an entirely different level of ability and musicianship, period. To this day, it's hard to believe just a handful of hours later Cliff was dead after playing this solo.
Cliff would often play something else before he got to the "Anesthesia" part; he did one really cool fairly long solo part right after that track during their live show at the Metro in Chicago back in 1983, and you can find that show on UA-cam if you simply search for "Metallica 1983".
Kirk was much more well-mannered and easier to deal with that Dave Mustaine. Dave would always get really drunk and start fights, and he has always struck me as a bit of a bully, so I have a bit of a problem with him, and apparently the other Metallica members felt that same way, since he got fired. And nope, he didn't get fired because he was a "threat" to James Hetfield - Cliff Burton was a "threat" as well, with his whole formal knowledge of music theory and everything, but they kept him and loved having him in the band, so James Hetfield clearly wasn't jealous in that way. Dave got fired because he was very violent and very difficult to deal with, end of story. Yes, he should have probably got fired in a less dramatic manner, but he misbehaved, and that was his own fault. He should learn from his mistakes like a man, instead of being bitter about it his entire life.

Fripp and Burton are both very active composers, and that can sometimes be challenging when creating a masterpiece. 😅

That was him Pluging in his bass. If you have distortion, turn it on, and THEN plug your bass in, the amp will squeal like that. It happens to me all the time
@@okeedokee3131 why is he replugging his bass? Is it to another input where it has distortion or something? I’m kinda confused since he didn’t do that in the other live shows cause usually he’d have to turn back to the regular tone for the regular songs literally right after the solo. Also my amp just make a loud glitch flicker sound if I do that lol

Newsted and Trujillo are in their own right and way outstanding bass players.......but Cliff was at an entirely different level of ability and musicianship, period. To this day, it's hard to believe just a handful of hours later Cliff was dead after playing this solo.

Cliff would often play something else before he got to the "Anesthesia" part;
he did one really cool fairly long solo part right after that track during their live show at the Metro in Chicago back in 1983, and you can find that show on UA-cam if you simply search for "Metallica 1983".

Kirk was much more well-mannered and easier to deal with that Dave Mustaine.
Dave would always get really drunk and start fights, and he has always struck me as a bit of a bully, so I have a bit of a problem with him, and apparently the other Metallica members felt that same way, since he got fired.
And nope, he didn't get fired because he was a "threat" to James Hetfield - Cliff Burton was a "threat" as well, with his whole formal knowledge of music theory and everything, but they kept him and loved having him in the band, so James Hetfield clearly wasn't jealous in that way.
Dave got fired because he was very violent and very difficult to deal with, end of story.
Yes, he should have probably got fired in a less dramatic manner, but he misbehaved, and that was his own fault.
He should learn from his mistakes like a man, instead of being bitter about it his entire life.
@@Peter_1986 I agree somewhat, he did it to himself 100% but look at the success Metallica has had that he wasn’t a part of, that’s got to sting, a lot. Megadeth is good, but I’m sure he feels like #2.
