Hetfield wrote vast majority of their music then, too. It's when they shed Mustaine completely and went into the Master era that they were on top of their game. That was Hetfield, as well. Always been Hetfield.

And after the first melody phrase, you cansee him say "I f*d it up", save it, and keep on like nothing happened. If he hadn't said anything, No one would have though it wasn't just a variation.
Cliff was not just an amazing bassist and musician, but by every account just the sweetest, coolest, most thoughtful guy. Such a cruel loss. Thank you for highlighting his genius.

Cliff was inspired by bach and mozart and really helped james and kirk with their classical tgemed solos, like in orion and call of ktulu. Love what he brough to the table being a cello player originally.

I knew the name Metallica, lot of headbangers where i grew up, and my buddy's older brother had his jean jacket painted with the puppets album cover. I didnt hear them till one, then i saw live cliff burton doing "bell toles" and I was like what is he doing, 3 fingers, wah, distortion on bass, and they looked like regular dudes, no make up, and fucking fast. Been a fan ever since. Cliff was a beast.
Considering that Cliff would have been about 21 years old at the time, just.... whoa. He put a lot into his own music, shame he passed so damn young. At least there's a lot of stuff for us to take in, very grateful for that.
Metallica is amazing. Thanks for doing this one. Saw them in Detroit, Superdome at the turn of the century. Ted Nugent opened and came out riding a white buffalo. Show was killer, everyone was wasted, thought James was going to break his back head banging sooo hard.
Ironically enough I saw them right around 98 at the Palace of Auburn Hills( floor tickets?) And Ted came out and sang one of his songs with the band playing it. Also walked away with James's guitar pick he threw in the crowd. Was literally 15 feet from the band the entire show. Got lucky with the floor tix, was at a ticketmaster location with my buddy and despite getting their early 100 people was ahead of us but this location handed out tickets to determine spots in line. I got like 175 my buddy pulled #3 after us floor tickets were sold out. Literally 2-3 mins

"Anesthesia..." is something that should stay forever in its own original version and that's why I am glad (and appreciate it) that you reacted to this masterpiece in such a way. The beauty of Cliff's playing was improvisation, and although a few mistakes crept in, it does not change the fact that such performances allow you to appreciate HIS talent.
I was fortunate enough to see them opening for OZZY back in 1986. I didn't really get the attraction of Metallica back then, I do now and have been since that concert. Unfortunately, Cliff was gone about 10 weeks after I was at that concert 😢😢😢

I see lots of musicians do it but it never ceases to amaze me. It seems if you can identify the 1st note that you can tell if the next notes are so many spaces away based on how high or low they are. It's like a super power though
I used to feel the same way until I could do it myself. It's something that comes after a ton of exposure and hearing and playing the same note or chords literally thousands of times. You can just recognize it after a certain point. I'm occasionally off by a semi tone when picking something out but will immediately notice and correct it.
Cliff is an excellent choice for a vid, so great job picking that one out. I think a lot of people overlook Steve Winwood as a guitarist. I would love to see a dissection of Dear Mr. Fantasy when he was in Traffic. He has made some incredible songs and is himself, a master musician.
He was musically the genius of the band. He ran circles around everyone else but has so much fun doing it. And then does it on Bass. Between him and Geezer Butler they are the reason why I love the Bass so much :)

I have followed him all across the country to see him and his wife Ashley perform live. Traveled up to 20hrs before from West Virginia to Denver, Colorado just to get to see them live! They are so worth it! They are truly talented and such great people! If you guys have never heard of them, check out Lost Dog Street Band and/or Benjamin Tod himself. You'll be glad you did! Their story alone is a great story to read about. They've been through a lot of hard times and it's grown them into the beautiful people they are today. This was such an exciting for new music. By the early 80’s I had grown disillusioned by Metal (the dominant sound was Hair Metal, i.e., pop songs with crunchy guitars), and I was listening exclusively to Hard Core Punk Rock, which provided a visceral and emotional engagement lacking in most other music. Then MetallicA came along and combined the power of Hard Core with the melodic and technical aspects of Metal, and totally blew my mind. Looking back for the 21st century it may seem like they’ve been part of mainstream Pop culture forever, but they were an underground band in a disparaged genre until they released the Black album.

Sir, this was an outstanding video, with footage I hadn't seen before. Instructor to Instructor, no shade - I was paying attention to Cliff's *right* hand, instead of his left hand on the neck. I dunno, I guess that's just me and my steering wheel bassist thoughts... I was trained in the violin, and so not much use in music today! LOL

As many times as I have seen clips of him playing this, I have never seen that one! It's a little different than the ones I have seen, and certainly a bit different from the KEA track. Probably because it's live and he is improvising. I also have never seen James and Kirk jump in at the end. Very cool clip to see, and as you said, very clear...especially for that era!
this is my first song i learned to play at the bass. made it lived at school. those finger tapping parts are so hard to do, you can even ear Cliff miss some note in the video.
I'm pretty sure this recording was on the "Cliff 'Em All" tribute video they made after his passing. I think I still have that VHS somewhere. it shows a lot of little snippets of what kind of person cliff was and some of his best performances. my favorite part is when he's smoking weed at a table in a dark room with some guy then starts anxiously whistling, looks around a bunch then starts jamming out to some music in his head while he starts to get stoned. I hope that tape has held up against the humidity and elements from almost 30 years.
My first Metallica album I owned at age 11 was And Justice for All, the 1st album without Cliff. When someone gave me Ride the Lightning to listen to, I was never the same. Cliff made me respect bass players.
I wish there was just one more master mind like Cliff was, all his crazy compositions and lil hippie on the side, while damn headbanging battery ram all the time!

As many times as I have seen clips of him playing this, I have never seen that one! It's a little different than the ones I have seen, and certainly a bit different from the KEA track. Probably because it's live and he is improvising. I also have never seen James and Kirk jump in at the end. Very cool clip to see, and as you said, very clear...especially for that era!

this is my first song i learned to play at the bass. made it lived at school. those finger tapping parts are so hard to do, you can even ear Cliff miss some note in the video.

I'm pretty sure this recording was on the "Cliff 'Em All" tribute video they made after his passing. I think I still have that VHS somewhere. it shows a lot of little snippets of what kind of person cliff was and some of his best performances. my favorite part is when he's smoking weed at a table in a dark room with some guy then starts anxiously whistling, looks around a bunch then starts jamming out to some music in his head while he starts to get stoned. I hope that tape has held up against the humidity and elements from almost 30 years.

Cliff died and it was a great loss for metal but at the same time The Legend was born, he is simply still the best 🤘🏼
