Do you split the controller to play 2 players or do you have to get a whole separate controller to play 2 players?

Is this actually fun to play in local coop? It looks like it’s difficult for each player to actually have any control over the level. I’m asking because my two sons (ages 6 and 10) love Sonic, and I like the idea that we could all play together, but I wonder how fun it would actually be for everyone. Thanks!
