This is the clearest, most elegantly delivered explanation of customization that I've ever come across - for any camera. Thank you so much, and please share more content.
Even though I am an SL and SL2 veteran this was an immensely helpful, organized walk-through of the new SL3 menus, Nick. Sat down on the sofa with my new camera, a beverage, and just walked through the menus with you...and learned several new features. It also helped be get the camera customized to taste. Very enjoyable. Thanks to Nick and Leica Australia for this!
As always, your videos are so informative. The first thing I do when I get a new camera is watch the video on how to set it up for most applicable used cases. Thank you so much!
That was ASTOUNDINGLY useful. In the most efficient and clear way possible, you have made the process of setting up my new SL3 a fun experience, something I would not have thought possible.
Thanks Nick. This vid was exactly what I was looking for as I was trying to customize after unpacking. I'm not a previous SL user, rather I'm coming from the M series.
Thank you, Nick, for this very well explained and laid out presentation. My new SL3 is supposed to be delivered sometime next week. Your video has been very, very helpful to me. I would hope that you would consider making more instructional videos in the future. The last one I saw from you was a long time ago (in today’s terms) when the SL 21mm APO lens was introduced!!! Thank you in advance for what you do to help us
This is a really very helpful video which I keep coming back to but one thing I can't seem to understand is why the viewfinder and live view display is in Black & White in the photo shoot mode but Colour in the video mode.
Great video. Many other Leica Stores have said that changing the resolution to say 36MP DOES NOT increase the DR as you mentioned. That was Leica marketing speak only. Also did not understand how to change the Leican's on the right side of the LCD. Thanks.
The published technical specs show 14 stops measurable DR in L-DNG and 15 stops DR in both M-DNG and S-DNG. I can only go by what I am told by the development team since it's actually quite hard to verify without test equipment. You can only customise the bottom 8 Leicons on the LCD screen. The other active Leicons at the sides and along the top are fixed.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia Thanks for that but in the US Leica says the DR is 15 stops and does not mention at which size DNG it is at 15 stops with no further information.
The sensor in the SL3 uses the same technology as in the M11. That is, it's a back-side illuminated sensor with dual gain ISO and pixel binning. By pixel binning back to 36MP or 18MP the noise floor is reduced and an extra stop of DR is gained. Full res at 60MP has a DR of up to 14 stops, the other two resolutions have up to 15 stops. I say 'up to' because it depends on ISO as well. The maximum will be at base ISO which is 64 for the M11 and 100 for the SL3. So if the US info says "up to 15 stops' then it is correct. The 15 stops comes in at M-DNG and S-DNG. At full res it's 14 stops. This information comes from the product managers when we train in new products. Public info might not be so detailed. Bear in mind that the difference might be 'measurable ', but in my experience it's not visible in most shooting situations. Also, don't confuse 14bit DNG with 14 stops DR. Not the same thing.

Got it Nick! Thank you for your assistance and thorough explanation of the SL3 menus. The spread sheet provides visual confirmation of your content for me. Most appreciated!
Nick, Excellently organized and clearly presented. I went through the settings on the SL3 based upon my SL2 and then watched your video page by page and tweaked my settings based upon your settings. I have some questions left re: WiFi, GPS, and Fotos, but nothing to hinder full use of the camera for taking pictures. Thank you.
Hello, thank you for the tutorial! I have a question about the default setting. Is it possible to make changes to the default setting bottom 8 icons in the menu? It is a bit annoying to select profile with the info bar whenever custom profiles not selected.
No, that's not possible, sorry. Custom User Profiles are a full-camera-state recording so going back to the Default Profile will necessarily reset the icons to their own original defaults. Personally, I use one User Profile and stick to it.
I was told that there are currently no plans to retrofit the new menu styling to the Q3 and M11 cameras. No doubt this styling will appear in future releases.
Can the SL3 be set up so that the shutter closes when the camera turns off, protecting the sensor? My M10-R does this, but my SL2 does not, so I have had problems with dust on the sensor when changing lenses in the field.
Unfortunately not. It's something I have been asking for for a while, but so far only the M camera drop a shutter with the lens off. I'm sure there is a really good reason, I just don't know what it is.
Ah, OK. Then yes it can. You set the camera to Manual Focus and click the rear joystick to trigger AF (AFs or AFc) then release to lock. It's a very elegant way to work.
One thing I didn’t see (maybe I missed it). Is there a place to set focal length (for when you’re using an adapted manual lens). Stabilisation would need to know this to work correctly… and in some camera systems you’d see the settings on that page.
Yes you can choose lenses - there is a built-in list of R and M lenses. I have not tried it with other brands but setting the same focal length should work fine. You are quite correct - stabilisation cannot work without the camera knowing the f/l of the lens fitted. It can be manually set under Camera Settings | Lens Profiles. Normally, for 6-bit encoded Leica lenses, it's greyed out and is set automatically.
excellent videos as always! I do have a question, though, when I set up my user profiles, it always defaults back to the default - sometimes in the midst of shooting. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, any suggestions?
Once you choose a User Profile it should remain set until you change it - that's kinda the whole point. I have seen cases when the camera goes back to default when the battery is pulled out without turning it off, but that's rare. If the problem persists, you will need to take it back to the store and explain the problem.
No multishot. Given the extra resolution of the new sensor, the fact that you can very effectively upscale in post, and the limitations of subject movement, it was decided not to include it. However, I am told it could be added later if there is enough demand.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia I'm hopeful they will include it. I use multi shot for two particular cases on the SL2. For architecture I like to use the perspective correction feature to decided on framing, but then take the image in Multi Shot to have the added resolution with the perspective corrections applied in post. The other reason I use it is for scanning medium and large format film. I guess my needs are sort of niche, but would be good to see them keep the feature since it was already implemented in an earlier model.
Thank you, Nick. I was just going through the menus - it doesn't seem to have the crop feature like the Q3 in video mode - unless I have missed something, Cheers, J.

My pleasure!

Just received my SL3. By far the best overview I have found. Love your other videos as well.
Awesome, thank you!
Extensive and insanely helpful. Thank you Nick.

ich liebe diese Erklärungen - zum Glück habe ich nun auch die passende Kamera :-)
Extremely useful and absolutely plausible. Can't wait until you publish your video settings. Great job, Nick, thanks a lot!

It’s very useful. I must say it’s a wonderful camera if you ignore the terrible design of the card door!
Wonderful and clear explanations. Nick it seems you missed the left top function button in your video. Can one assume you left it on default? Thanks.
Yes, correct
That was excellent. That is very helpful for someone like me, who has come over from the Q system.

You must have different Film Styles set between Photo and Video. Sounds like your Jpeg settings are set to Film Style / B+W.

Okay Nick, I will have to follow your lead as you've convinced me to get one to replace ny trusty SL2. What is your favorite lens for this beast?
Any of the SL lenses work just fine, naturally. The 35mm APO is probably the 'best' in terms of pure resolution.
Thanks Nick.
Thanks Nick. Do you know if any of the new features esp. fonts and customisations will make it to the Q3 via a s/w update?

Nice walk through Nick. I'm wondering if the new camera has Multi Shot? I downloaded the SL3's manual and didn't see it included in there.

Please do feed this back to Leica. If there is enough demand the SL3 product manager told me he would consider adding it back in.

No crop feature like in the Q3. In stills nor video modes. it would be nice to have I think - sent feedback to Leica, they do listen!
Glad to hear you agree Nick - I’m assuming this could be easily enabled in firmware?
Yes, possible in f/w, but easily, not so sure. These things are more complex than one might imagine.
Execellent video , Thanks !!!
Thank you so much ❤
You're welcome 😊
Very good videos. Thanks
Glad you like them!
Helpful video
Thanks
Is that possible to have GPS tap on SL3/M11 ?
The SL3 and M11 can geotag images via the FOTOS app. AFAIK, there are no plans to add it in to the camera, like in the original SL.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia thx
It still doesn't, have a decent e shutter it's a shame !
The SL3 has an electronic shutter which goes up to 1/16,000 sec.
@@LeicaCameraAustralia I mean the rolling shutter effect. (Read out speed)
Is it just me who think things are getting to complicated today?
