I has been a long time since I have seen a woodworker hammer nails into wood! Those trays came out "mint" - the kind of tray you would expect on a Michelin restaurant or 5-star hotel. Good start of 2022!
Looking good. Very clean and elegant simplicity that showcases the work. Exactly what I was looking for from an aesthetic viewpoint. This video is good inspiration as I consider how to make a set of trays for dining and entertaining.
At first, I didn't think I would like that stain but the final result was awesome. As Brad Rodrigues (Fix this Build that) would say, "mistakes were made". But the true test of an accomplished woodworker is overcoming mistakes. You are an accomplished woodworker. Thanks Vic!
Thank you very much for the comment Mark. My sister introduced me to that colour and i like it. i first used it on this piece for her ua-cam.com/video/vHWsc6S-F74/v-deo.html
@@DownUnderWoodWorks I remember that table. Another example of your skills. I am going to look for that stain in my area. Might try it on a piece. Thanks Vic.
Thank god you make unexpected changes to plan as I seem to do that a lot. Made my mum a tray earlier in the year where changes to the plan was a norm rather than an exception. She loved it all the same. Happy new year to you and your family mate. Have a good one.
Mate, its all part of the creative process (or thats what we tell people who don't know any better and just appreciate the things we make). Happy new year to you and the family too mate
Thanks very much Graham. My sister introduced me to that colour and i like it a lot. I first used it on this piece for her ua-cam.com/video/vHWsc6S-F74/v-deo.html
Nice work mate, I made 3 trays for a friend as Christmas gifts as well the recipients were very happy with their gifts all made from scrap recycled materials
Very nice touch with the handles Vic, love the look of them and I have no doubt the recipients loved them. Great job as usual mate cheers to you and 2022….🍻🍻🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thanks very much James. I actually finished the trays for xmas but it took me till the next year to get the video out 🤣🤣 Happy new year to you too mate
Nothing quite like a last minute pre Christmas project! Came out great mate, and no need to complicate things with elaborate joinery when time is a factor! Awesome!
Great Project. Love the handles. Extra brownie points for the method of marking and then jointing the edges of the tray bottom. Without explanation, it was very clear what and why you were doing it. Happy New Year Victor
Thank you Peter, its great to get feedback like that. I used the same method in the round coffee table video and explained it there. i just thought i'd be repeating myself
Very well done. I assume you don't think there will be a problem with the cross grain connection on the ends. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2022 and stay safe.
No i don't Glen. In all my experiences i haven't had issues with it. Thank you for watching, commenting and supporting mate. You have a great and safe new year too.
I always love your patience when you make these beautiful items mate, the handles are a different approach & I think the trays would of been happily received. Happy 2022 wishes to DownUnder Woodworks 🇦🇺🍺👍
Cheers mate, its always good to hear from people that appreciate what you do. The trays were received very well and were totally unexpected. Best wishes to you, the family and Sumo's Projects for 2022
Mate they look beautiful and I love how you made those handles, I think i'll definitely "borrow" that idea, but you had me at the start hahah 😂😂 You have to just love the time frame your wife gave you! 😂😂
Nice job... splined mitres might have been the go for those corners but hey! Your Design!!! I must have missed how you attached the handles... did you screw right up through the steel tube into the handle parts from the tray??? Doesn't seem much for them to grip onto if that's how you did it. Not an issue for light roads of course! 🙂Sealing the bottom with urethane (poly whatever) is a brilliant idea. Love that beeswax!!!
Thanks. Yes i did and they seemed just fine. haven't had any issues reported back to me with the handles. to tell the truth, if the trays were loaded so heavy that the handles failed then they're not really using the tray as intended.
Nice trays but I'd be a little concerned about wood movement since those bottoms are a solid panel and somewhat wide. Since the video is about a year old, I was just wondering if the recipients have told you of any cracks happening?
Hey mate, the trays are doing great. I’ve just replied to comment on another one of my videos. I haven’t had any issues with any of my projects regarding wood movement. I think it may be our climate here in Australia because most of the fear mongering about wood movement seems to come out of the US and Canada 🤷🏻♂️
Great job as usual Victor, but I need to know where you got your thicknesser. You went from 11mm to 15mm. (2:27) I can really use a thicknesser that makes boards thicker. 🤣 The serving trays turned out fantastic though. Hope you have an awesome new year. Cheers mate. 👍🍺
Haha, when i listened to my explanation after publishing the video i thought it didn't flow well and may be confusing to some but i think most will work out what i'm trying to say. awesome new year to you too mate
A bit late to the party, but great build, they turned out wonderfully! I've had similar glue staining on bits of Tassie oak, but only on some bits, it couldn't be consistent of course. Seems to me like the glue is pulling something out of the wood. Hope you didn't throw the potentially-innocent clamp away. 😂
No worries Geoff. I think it was rubber off the clamp pad. Must have reacted with the glue. It was all good in the end though because so much of what we do is problem solving.
Technically that is a possibility Jonathon but I've made quite a few pieces where expansion and contraction have not been an issue. i think it might be our climate here in Australia and also when items live inside the house they're not subjected to weather extremes.
Hi Justin. No, its the base that was under the treadmill mat when i dismantled it for the wooden 2x72 belt grinder build. its like a super heavy duty MDF with a black coating
Great job but over kill for home DIY who don't have a lot of tools, lot of unnessasary tools Glue and brad nails does the trick. Don't let this video make you think you need to do it like this vidio Ex. ua-cam.com/video/Lxdqsm66cl8/v-deo.html

With the utmost respect, I love the simplicity of these trays. They're clean and tidy, just perfect.
Thank you very much Andrew. No offence taken. They were deliberately simple because i was on a time crunch

Haha, yes mate, i knew some viewers would appreciate old school nail hammering. Thanks very much Jesper
i picked up some 5mm bamboo seedling stakes from Bunnings recently. They make fantastic nails.

Great trays in the thumpnail. Happy New Year Vic! Looking at the video now.
Two comments on the same video! thanks again mate
Simple but elegant, and justification of your wife's confidence in your abilities. A peaceful, and productive, new year to you.
Thank you very much mate and same to you 👍
was a pleasure to see a master woodworker in action
Thank you for your very kind words
Nice project. I like your process for jointing the edges to ensure they align with no gaps. I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future jointing.
Thanks John, glad the video was helpful mate
I LOVE the message you've written on your table saw. It's a worthwhile addition and one I'm going to be putting on my jobsite saw.
Good stuff Peter, its a simple but powerful message
Fantastic! Beautiful trays.
You are clever and obviously a perfectionist. 👍
I try to be at least. Thank you very much Jean for your very kind words

Great little project and beautiful end result! I like nails and dowelmax usage - with the accessory you can even dowel miters.
Thank you very much. The Dowelmax is a great tool

Really nice design, the handles were very cool.

Not often that nails get used in projects anymore! They came out beautiful Vic, great stuff!
Yes mate, nails AND hammered in by hand. I thought it would be a novelty for some. Thanks very much Mario

Great project. They look great.

Nice mate, I see the old trim router has a flashy new paint job... 🤣🤣
Thanks Luis. I don't know why I still have that thing, it screams louder than my thicknesser. Horrendous 🤣

Inspiring! Do you think a 12mm plywood board from Bunnings can be used as the base? I've got spare hardwood for the sides.
Yes absolutely mate. That would make for a very solid tray
awesome gonna make someone happy
