What is YOUR favourite 'What if' car?
Likely the Packard Imporious or the Packard P-p-p-“patricipolitan”. I have to say though, I was quite taken back by your comment on the 58 Lincoln; I think it’s a gorgeous car!

I would create my own. A 1958 Edsel combined with a Ranchero of the same year. I know, kill the guy who likes Edsels. I do. They are perfectly fine. I even like the front end.

I'd love to see concepts for the evolution of Nash, Packard, Studebaker, Hudson and other defunct American brands into the modern day and other eras, seeing how cues evolve over time.
Did these long-term company cues exist then, ever? Today, they all seem like a random hodgepodge of as much chrome as the budget allowed.

@@themoviedealers Plot twist: no one in the industry believes in the nonsensical misconception of SUVs. The industry still bets on the old good sedan, and only AMC makes a funny car they call Eagle.
I like these "what if" pictures. I'd love to see some artists show their interpretation of what cars in the 70s and 80s might look like if the Malaise era with the gas crisis and all the safety regulations never happened
For starters, the huge bumper would not be present, but I think the rest would be pretty much the same..? (rectangular headlights, boxy styling etc.)
In the case can you imagine in 1976 driving a 600hp Mustang

Cadillac built a coupe utility called the Castilian (I think). Had a compartment in the body for golf bags

Rolls Royce automobiles were made in America for a decade with several U.S. coachbuilders building bodies for them that were _"specifically for the American market."_
They were called _Rolls Royce Springfields_ as they were built in Springfield, Massachusetts from 1921 through 1931.
During the first half of the last century, Springfield, MA had an interesting transportation history. Along with Rolls Royce was the Duryea Brothers Car, the Knox Automobile Company, with it's "porcupine" air cooled engine, the Gee Bee planes, Wason Manufacturing Company, which made streetcars and Railway passenger coaches and the Indian Motorcycles. More recently, a company called CRRC opened plant in Springfield, manufacturing passenger rail cars.

My favourites are the Hudson-Citroen car might be the most interesting what-if car of them all especially if it comes with all the unique features of the DS and the Mercury Northernpike looks such a fun machine to drive and looks great and the blue white colour scheme just really brings in the mountain river fishing aestehtics.
Also the Patriciapolitan is such an incredibly pretentious name its actually amazing
I think the same. The Hudson DS could even have saved two companies. It looks like it could have sold in Europa with very minor changes as the top of the line model for Panhard after Citroen bought them.
When I was a kid some 4,000 years ago, I had a toy drawing kit marketed under the Hot Wheels name and of course, made by Mattel. It consisted of a plastic frame with a couple of dozen green plastic stencils you could use to draw cars. The stencils were made so that all the cars would mix and match between the rear end, the passenger compartment, and the engine compartment. You could therefore make your own "designs" using different parts of different cars. I loved that thing, wish I still had it.
Ed, have you ever played fallout 4? The automobiles they created for that universe are fascinating, I’d love to see you do a video on them. Even if it’s just your thoughts. The cars are 1950s inspired, but with somewhat modern features. The cars are also fusion powered. Ford was trying to make a fusion powered car as early as 1958.
I was wondering that. That’s the game that got me started on the 1950s (and oh boy it did)
@@isaacsrandomvideos667 Oh yes, I grew up listening to older music, starting collecting antiques at 12, and anything from the 40s, 50s and 60s. I could just live in the fallout universe. Hopefully with the Bethesda-Microsoft purchase, we will get a Fallout game faster.
@@andyreaver1962 literally the exact same here. Personally I’ve always been like this but fallout Kickstarted it. I’m glad it did though, the amount of interesting things you can find from the past.
Nope never played it, but I know the cars, very amplified American atomic age styling.
I'm currently on a Fallout 4 replay going through and blowing up every single one of the vehicles. If I can't have them no one can.
Plus the explosions are just friggin' cool.
I have to say, of all the different concepts and designs, the Northernpike Cruiser feels as though it could be the likeliest candidate to have actually existed. However, I don't see it as a Mercury, but rather as a Jeep product. It feels so much like a Bronco or F100 and a Jeep Wagoneer put together. I'd certainly own it!

How fun, love Mr. Peiler's renderings. It's also fun to hear the reasoning behind automotive designs. Like, "we wanted to make the car look like a crouching Jaguar so sweeping front fenders blended into running boards" (XK-120)

@@EdsAutoReviews My dad who went to California for car design told me that. He restored a 1950 XK-120 and used it as a daily driver. His love of cars was infectious. Hearing the stories behind the wonderful design and engineering for cars and aircraft are inspiring. Wouldn't it be fun to see film makers tell these accounts?

I like to make fictional designs with 3D Modelling in Blender, and this video blew my mind. I'm most comfortable designing cars from the 60's and 70's up to the early 00's, but a 50's Car would be just a marvelous study in design over practicality for me. Absolutely lovely video, and would tune in for 2nds.

With a bit more development, an adequate-powered engine, and sturdier door hardware, the KFD161 Darrin from Kaiser (which beat the Corvette to the showrooms) would have been a monumental success. And the '53 Kaiser taillights were more beautiful than anything GM had to offer from any division, and the '54s with the lens extending along the fender tops would have looked even better on Kaiser's fiberglass wonder.
If Henry J. Kaiser had promoted development of the 288 cubic inch V8 his engineers were working on, Kaiser-Frazer might have been viable and the Darrin would have been a word-beater.

Great episode, so whimsical and fun! Personally, I love the styling of the Edsel and never understand its detractors (I think it's 20-20 hindsight. Styling was not the reason for the Edsel's failure but it became the excuse).
My personal favorite 'What if' car would be the merging of the 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner with the 1958 Edsel Citation convertible. It would become the 1958 Edsel Citation Starliner, Starliner being a name that Ford later used in 1960.
Ed, you have to look up the 1946 Bulgemobiles and the 1958 Bulgemobiles by Bruce McCall, a Canadian illustrator for the New Yorker who also did hilarious parodies of 1940s and 1950s illustrated advertisements for the fictional American car brand Bulgemobile. I believe they appeared in the American humor magazine National Lampoon back in the 1970s or '80s. Pure comedy gold if you are a fan of postwar American cars!

I actually saw a Pontiac Chieftain in Bucharest in person a year or two ago. I knew what it was solely because I played Mafia 2 and researched the real life counterparts of the in-game vehicles. Video games can be very educational.

When I was a lad in the San Fernando Valley, there was a custom that would park not far from my house that was a 1958 Ranchero with an Edsel front clip skillfully grafted to it,
It looked really cool.
The fact that in 1940 Packard was a high end, high dollar car upscale of even Cadillac and 15 years later was floundering. Amazing.
Nice. I watch far too many car UA-cam videos and this is the first time I've seen this kind of content.
I've never thought about 'what if' cars before, that's neat. I think of things like "what if they made a magnet powered car?", "what is the biggest engine I could fit in the middle of a Mitsubishi Eclipse?", "what if NASCAR ran 2-stroke/diesel?", and a lot of marketing for Ford for some reason, like an electric mid engine Thunder Bird to combat the new Corvette. These are all reoccurring thoughts lol.
I really really love what if scenarios and especially when it includes cars. I myself try to writ some what if stories about transportations (about Chrysler Europe if it was taken by Honda instead of PSA, or kept by Chrysler, or if Renault try differently in the US for examples, but sadly, only in french). Keep going with your videos, I enjoy your way of saying and really hope to have other what if scenario presented by you

Packard had some nifty ideas for its cars going forward from 1957. It would be nice to see them here. Great video, you're a real car lover.
I really like the Pontiac Muroc. By the way, Muroc was originally a farm before it became a United States Air Force Base. Its name came from the farm owners, the Corum brothers. Reverse their name and get Muroc. After he was killed in an airplane crash, the changed the name to honor Major Glen Edwards in 1949. So Muroc farm/car race area. air base is now Edwards Air Force Base where they test all the newest aircraft for the Air Force, like the first aircraft to officially break the sound barrier, the Bell X-1 flown by Chuck Yeager..

Hi Ed. Just a quick FYI. You don't have to put an apostrophe after a year when you're referring to a decade. You put one before the 50 if you don't want to write the 19. 1950s becomes '50s. You write 1950's or 50's if you're referring to an event that specifically took place in the year 1950. For example, when you write 1979's oil crisis instead of oil crisis of 1979. Or 1962's Cuban missile crisis.
There was an Australian Holden Kingswood that had a Chevrolet grille, bumper and lights grafted to the front, for sale in South Africa in the late sixties/early seventies.
My dad had a '72 Ford LTD 2 door with the 400 cubic inch engine and two barrel carburetor. It was a beautiful brown color, a two door with the brown interior instead of the black that was standard. My dad towed a 26 foot Argosy trailer with it an had no trouble despite the two barrel carburetor.
The Packard-Lincoln would have been an upgrade over the Edsel. This past March, I saw the Predictor at the Studebaker museum and I think it's BEAUTIFUL!. On the other hand, I do want an Edsel because of it's history, and the look just kinda grows on you over time.
These are incredible. The Mercury Northernpike Cruiser makes me wonder what SUV-style vehicles would have looked like in the 1950's if the platform had been as popular then as it is today.
Also, asking about the practicality of the Forward Look and massive fins on a ute?

Two manufacturer that don't get a lot of love, Panhard, especially the 24, a great looking car, and Triumph, their saloon cars (especially the large 2000 series). I wonder what would come about if they joined forces, or joined forces with other manufactures.
What about Borgward? The poor man's Mercedes.
Frank Peiler really knows how to make a "what if car". His wicked designs really do make sense. Really better than what I see sometimes.
Also does Ed play automation? I would love to see some of his builds if he has one.

Replace Partenon shaped gront grill with a toroidal shaped one, a dripping glacê texturing would add eyecatching effect.
Replace granny suspension with a low rider se tup.
Replace radiator's lid with flattened muzzel canid.
Add some flames details anywhere around the car's body.
Great to hear from you again. That Lincoln/Rolls definitely screams RAMBLER in the grille.

The U.S. Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle from Apollo 15 on the Moon in 1971 would still start up today, meanwhile I’m having issues firing up my 2019 KIA on certain days. A vehicle that lasts more than 5 years is my dream vehicle

I've seen a '57 Chevrolet changed into an El Camino they use the roof off of a 55 through 57 Chevrolet pickup instead it is really a beautiful car
I liked Frank's designs the longer I watched this video. I would like to think that American automakers would integrate Rolls Royce touches more convincingly. The Packard ones at the end were excellent.
I have been sketching cars since I was at school, and making my own designs while answering my own design briefs. It's actually really fun, though nerdy. I even go so far as to erase parts of the pencil design to add a later face-lift or performance version in my fantasy world. I do all this while I'm on the phone or should be working! Anyway, I've just left my job and, on my last day in the office, I collected together all the scrap pieces of paper and notepads that feature my drawings. My plan is to cut off any confidential information and send the sketches to design houses. They're perhaps old-fashioned, are not 3D and do not include colouring or shading, but I think they're otherwise pretty good. What's the worst that can happen? They tell me not to write them again or don't reply to me at all??

Ed, may I suggest a holiday destination? Daytona Beach, Florida hosts "Turkey Rod Run" near the end of each November and it's one of the most enjoyable events centered around classic American car culture that I can think of off the top of my head. With air travel being shockingly inexpensive in the wake of the lockdowns, it might be worth considering. The emphasis is on custom cars rather than restored originals, but restorations are well represented.
Imagine any of those drawing come to the Life with modern features........What a car would it be.

For all of you who've never heard of Kaiser. Kaiser was an American shipbuilder who became famous building the Liberty ships. Lots of Jeeps were also build by Kaiser during WWII. After the war he build a factory in Rotterdam where luxury cars (my uncle had one) and Jeeps for the Dutch army were build. The Jeeps were called NEKAF (Nederlandse Kaiser Auto Fabriek), and they served a long time in the army. My unit in the seventies had several in service.

It would be very interesting a 1970s 'what if' cars design theme; for example, a 1975 Edsel with hidden headlamps, based on the Ford LTD platform.
There is a image out that with the same idea for a 1971 Edsel

8:45 this looks more like a mash-up of 1955 Studebaker than Citroen with the Hudson. The wheelbase wouldn't need to be stretched, as the DS rode on a very long wheelbase.

I like what you do here. Automobile history is in everyone's DNA with our life-long love-hate relationship that we have with our cars. And from Daimler to Tesla, it's history. Frank Peiler's excellent "What Ifs" have appeared often in Collectible Automobile magazine. On that note...
How about a vid on this quality publication? It's been on the magazine racks since mid '80's. Photos of full scale clay mock-up "What If's" are frequently featured from Big 3 photo archives. Other great regular features as well.

Indeed...the Lord's work. I love this stuff. That last Packard almost happened with Lincoln. After financing Packard 's all new 57 designs fell thru, there was talk of putting those designs on a Lincoln body, as well as building Studebaker 's on the 57 Ford bodies. It went so far as drawings and clay mockups. It's a very interesting question how might the 58 Edsel have been perceived after the 57 Packard came out. Would it still have been a flop for copying a luxury brand? I think the Studebaker makes the best Rolls. But, it would have been based on the President, not the sporty Hawk. The Lincoln is a monstrosity in real life, and as a Rolls. The largest car ever built, it literally was a land yacht. That Studebaker-Mercedes dealership is Lagrew Motors in Lexington, KY. Still selling MB's today, same company, different name.
