As the oldest sibling who had to be "the strong one" for the sake of my family and community, this song immediately resonated with me. In fact, I cried when I first listened to it. This song perfectly captures all of the stresses and worries of being in this position, for being "the strong one" in your family or community often means you believe you must always be able to help or protect the people you care about, even if it means you need to sacrifice own happiness, physical health, and mental health to do so.

as the youngest, I had to be the best one. somehow neutralise the mistakes of older siblings and be as good as their biggest success. eventually, I stopped giving a shit about everything.

Now that I'm older, it has become my turn to attempt to look out for my older sister. Driving her to places we wouldn't have gone as kids, buying her lunch and sometimes baby sitting my nephew. Even helping her if she faces ANY financial problems. I may not be the older one but i try to be a big brother to her when i can.

I think the message doesn't just apply to older siblings but really anyone who's been under the pressure of expectation. In my family, I'm the youngest, and ever since I remember, my parents had given up on my oldest sister, and despite the second oldest sister being the hardest worker of everyone in the family, my parents put the pressure on me, the youngest, to carry whatever hope they had. And not just my parents, but friends who grew to rely on me. It took me years to realize that it's okay to not have all the answers, because it did cause me to break several times. The pressure of expectation can come from so many places.

I 💯 agree, expectations really take it out of people. But I do think the pressure on older sisters and older siblings in general is something different and that’s why this song hits so close to the heart. I think most big sisters can relate to that we sort of take on this pressure of being responsible for the happiness and don’t want to disappoint our families and feel responsible for harmony .
Like for you it was your family actively putting that pressure on you to do well, where I think that’s where there is a slight distinction in that the pressure of expectations on older sisters is that it’s not actually something that needs to be vocalized for older siblings especially older sisters, is that we are to be ‘second in command’ so to speak to our mothers. This ties in with societies influence on familial relationships.
There is a certain expectation women are the care takers thus why the older sister role is unique in that it’s unspoken rules that cause that pressure as well as the family relying on you like you said in you own story .Older sisters feel guilty and ashamed if they don’t shoulder all the emotional trauma of the family and carry alot of physical labour too. Shoulder our mother’s worries and complaints while simultaneously being given the same responsibility of a parent over our siblings, not being allowed to voice ur complaints, for the sake of peace.
      But anyways that’s my take

@@lauryn2868 Definitely! The expectations often placed on the eldest sibling is often…crushing, for lack of a better word. I love that my family always comes to me because they know I’ll come through, it also took a long time for me to find a balance.

Sharing Heart, I'm inclined to agree. At my current job at a warehouse, we have a department called Dot Com, or E Com, and they pretty much lesve it up to one (forklift) operator, namely me, to do all the Let Downs [bringing pallets down from locations].
And the other operators we have almost never help out.
And it certainly doesn't help when some of the pickers want to be impatient, wanting to be helped right when they need it: like leaving the isle they need help on to find me instead of waiting for me to see them waiting and come to them.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the guy who wrote Hamilton and the songs for Moana, also wrote the songs for Encanto as well. He's an amazing songwriter so it's no wonder each song is a definite bop. Also, he as an older sister and pretty much said she was the inspiration for this song.

I noticed it as well the first time I watched Encanto and it was one of the things I found the most relatable throughout Louisa's song - I can't even count how many times I've picked up the extra weight for both my younger (and older on occasion) siblings when they needed help - not necessarily because the asked me to but because I felt an obligation to even when I knew my own health might suffer from it (gotta love all-nighters...) The way Louisa pushes Maribel out of the way without hesitation and takes on the extra weight is probably one of the most heart-wrenching and accurate portrayals of third-parent siblings I've ever seen.

    • @katherinecote-trotter3300
      @katherinecote-trotter3300 2 роки тому +10

Ya, the entire clip, she is next to Mirabelle and protecting her except when she is in the air. She is soft and delicate with Mirabelle but tough all the rest of the time. Luisa represents parentified children, that is, children who take on more responsibility in the family than they should, hindering their ability to be a child, and making them into a parent of sorts that tries to manage everyday pressure.

I know it doesn't interest anyone, but I need to say it, (In my family, my grandfather died in this quarantine, and I was sad about it, but just as soon as I was told of his death, everyone I knew and including family aside told me "You can't cry you are the First son and The big brother, you must be strong and be for your family..." I said, "But I'm sad about Grandpa" they said it doesn't matter
"Be strong," believe it or not, those words I listened to and at my grandfather’s wake and funeral, I didn’t cry at any time, because I only had in mind to be strong for my family, I never cried goodbye to my grandfather, And that affected me so much that every time I try to be strong for "Family" but nobody is there for me. That night after the funeral and burial, after everyone was resting I stayed awake and I still remember the time, it was 4am and at that time it was the only time I cried. And that’s how the song says, always under a lot of pressure for being the big brother. ) I just wanted to say this if anyone read thanks. Bye... :)

My favorite part of this was when she said "A light wind blows" and you see a tornado.
It shows how skewed her normalcy is for a tornado to be a "Light wind", and that she is still trying to do way too much even while singing a song.

This song is, in my opinion, one of the best songs. It makes me cry Every. Single. Time. As an older sister, as a mom, as a woman...it all feels like pressure. Especially the line "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" I just feel like I always need to be there for everyone else and this hits that directly. And her voice is so raw and real. Like you can feel how she feels. It's honestly brilliant and has been playing on repeat at my house. Lots of therapeutic tears 😭😂

When I first watched this movie, and this song came up, it was the first time I'd heard the song. I began to weep...like, uncontrollably. Not sure if anyone in my family noticed, but I've been the "strong one" physically, mentally, emotionally, in so many ways... and it's a pressure I know that I put on myself. I haven't processed the deaths in my family, because I try to be "the rock" that allows everyone else to release their feelings. On the other hand, I'm also the scapegoat. HAH... fun stuff, like Bruno, who we don't talk about.

The song IS about being obligated to be the strongest, having to be unbreakable and feeling like you have to be at 10 all the time. It's not happy, but at the same time, i don't think Luisa hates doing it, she just dislikes the pressure that comes with. Like, she likes being able to help her family and town, but doesn't like what she has to do to help them, the pressure her family puts on her to do so, because she feels bad having to be this strong emotionless effortless girl who just, does, and feels like if she doesn't do, if she fails, then she's a failure.

I'm the oldest sister in my family. When my son played this song in the car the first time, I broke down crying, and had a hard time explaining to him why. If you watch this in a theater, the people jamming out will be the younger siblings, and the people drying their eyes will be the older ones. In answer to your question of if this is a happy song...this is the loudest cry for help you will ever hear from your big sister, because she loves you and doesn't want to scare you by crying as she breaks.

I'm the oldest of my siblings and while yes, I can identify with Luisa's song from that aspect, I find that I identify with it more as someone with ADHD and Anxiety. Always being under the pressure of expectations society has of people based on a neurotypical point of view. It goes to show that while this song is written with the point of family expectations on an older sibling in mind, it fits a much wider range of situations which makes it a really powerful song that makes so many people who struggle silently feel seen.

that's definitely one aspect of it; in addition to be something all humans may relate to, it's also specifically centering a protective heroic female which is something we often don't talk about and portray in our media; if we do she's harassed and unacknowledged and disavowed starting in 2nd grade by the boys in her class; later she's told she'll never be loved, should try to appear weak, should change herself and the way she contributes to humanity and expresses love--or no man will ever want to go on a date with her, and should be slim. We show protective, strategic, project-oriented, or physically strong women as heartless, even if we frequently show males as *showing their love* if they have the same traits and behave as Luisa does. Yes, this was for everyone, but it was also for Toni Wolff's Amazons, and that's why a woman created; and, it's as it should be that boys and men can relate to another human who happens to be a woman

I think this is a rlly important song about mental health for anyone experiencing pressure. Luisa is physically strong above the surface (her appearance to other people); however, under the surface, she’s rlly struggling with lots of pressure making her not as mentally strong. I really like this metaphor on how above the surface is like your appearance to other people, and under the surface is your mental and emotional health. In the middle of the song, Luisa expresses her feelings for if she was able to shake off all the pressure that keeps accumulating, and allow her some room for joy, relaxation, and pleasure. However, that thought gets interrupted by more pressure that she states “keeps growing” with more expectations from others.

She was my Luisa when we were growing up but roles kinda shifted where I was Luisa in our 20s and 30s. Thankfully, we make a great team and provide each other with a good sounding board whenever our respective roles get a bit much.

I honestly believe this movie wouldn't had hit so close to home for people if it werent for Lin-Manual Miranda working with it. Nice reaction but not gonna lie, I was looking forward to seeing your faces to the surprise shift and tone of the song. (When Luisa started singing "Drip, Drip, Drip) That pause completely ruined it. Try not to do that so often, it takes people out of the reaction.

She is the middle kid too. Not the eldest. It's so more traumatic when you see how and why she is like this and that it began so early in life. Poor kids only 17 and under more physical and emotional pressure than anyone else in the town. If you think about it they each have their own trauma but cant reach out or vent it. This is first time ever venting and it must have felt good but she had to be cautious about it.

This song is amazing, but I think k part of why it hits so hard is Luisa's design. Originally, they didn't want her to be buff, and the artists had to practically refuse to work if they didn't let them give her muscles. I just feel like it wouldn't ha e been as deep coming from a girl that looks like a bean pole, even if she can move mountains.

I agree, but I also think in this movie that other townspeople were placing pressure on Luisa because they expect her to be able to be of service when they need something that requires lots of strength.

I don’t even know if it’s that “we put pressure on ourselves” so much as is it’s an expectation; especially in Hispanic cultures.

Okay. This is the first video I've seen of you guys, and I was curious, what songwriter would say to this song. I've watched till 05:07 now, and I don't know if you're interested in that kind of feedback, but I'm honestly too frustrated to watch you any more at the moment. As people who have to do lots and lots with music you could maybe work on your timing when it comes to pausing the song. I mean, you always paused mid-sentence, not once between verses. And with the stop at the "drip-drip-drip" part at 2:42 you almost killed me. Not once was there a specific part of the music / singing you had to immediately comment on, it was always just about the overall topic of the song (the big siblings' pressure). Maybe you could just let the song play through and talk afterwards? And if there's a special moment in the song you have to comment on immediately, maybe you can reverse the song for a few seconds when you let the music play again? Just my two cents.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius imo and let's not discount Germaine Franco (co-writer for multiple songs/music on Encanto). This movie and the lyrics especially offering a poignant look at inter-generational trauma.

This is the anthem to all older siblings I know I was the big brother to 3 siblings and we had a single mother so I know I felt like and still feel like I had to take care and protect everyone and act like nothing was is wrong and be everyone's shoulder to cry on and their strong rock while I had to just hide my worries and problems.

Nice video, it just always bothers me to no end when you have singers, songwriters or otherwise musically inclined people who PAUSE THE SONG IN THE MIDDLE OF A BAR. Lol there is such a thing as a downbeat... and you don't kill the flow of the song by pausing on it 😅😊

I wondered what would younger siblings or those who don’t hold all the family pressure would think of this song and I wasn’t surprised lol. They had a pretty boring reaction. Also, are they supposed to be songwriters???? They didn’t even analyze any of the song writing in this song. Or make any connections. I guess they just couldn’t connect to this song since they have never felt the pressure that Luisa and many others feel.
