Denzel's so subtle, it's perfect. It's the look in his face as they both recognise this is their last conversation, his eyes....he nails it and yet people wouldn't care to notice how perfect he is. This scene is so compassionate and Denzel couldn't be better

I know first hand, it's hard to keep it together when you're talking to somebody you care about and they're dying. He probably didn't want to get emotional in front of him and upset him.
Just found out that Philadelphia actually means "brotherly love" in Greek - gives a whole new relevance to the title of the film. And what a fantastic name for a city...
Ironic in DC comics, Billy Batson the Captain Marvel and SHAZAM was a orphan and he gets a new family in falcet city or some parts of philadelphia like in the movie, and one of the points of the movie is family and being together with his brothers, like happend when Shazam family appears, is not family until you feels in family, not matter what, loving everyone related or not, that's is what being humble and kind is.
As much as I love this movie, it utterly breaks my heart to think that for every person with AIDS who died surrounded by loved ones, so many more died alone, abandoned, and afraid.
Amen to that! I remember crying at the end of the Movie and My Sister asked why. I explained "Andy had such a warm loving Family who didn't have a problem with him being Gay, alot of Families either ignore, or disown their Child. On the UK Teen Drama Ackley Bridge, an Indian Girl tells her Mother she's Gay and she's in love with her Teacher and her Mother who is Muslim went hysterical.
I love how obvious yet somehow subtle this is by Washington. His character knows full well that this is their last exchange, but little indicators in the conversation like 'see you later' and 'I'll see you again' despite that, is just perfect.
On first finding out that "Andy" has AIDS, "Joe" was afraid even to shake his hand! So touching him like this, on what is likely their last meeting, shows the growth of his compassion, understanding and respect.
I have read somewhere that for him, the ability to touch Andrew confidently was a huge victory for him, the final hurdle for Joe Miller to overcome his homophobia. If you remember in the beginning of the film he gets scared after he shakes his hand because he thinks he got AIDS from him, but now he knows better and isn’t afraid. It shows a transformation of character on his part.
i don’t think it was overcoming homophobia. i think he had already pretty much overcome that. i think the big step here was overcoming his fear and repulsion of aids. he wasn’t scared of “catching aids” anymore
@@jacobm6617 Exactly, both of you. At first, he was no better than Wheeler and Associates, but at least he learned something. He hit his "a-ha" moment. They didn't.
Great comment. I love the way Denzel's character evolves in this film. It's not instantaneous but through baby steps that he eschews his prejudice, which is often how this occurs in real life. Denzel's subtle portrayal also makes for an incredible realistic performance.
That depressing moment when Denzel Washington tells Tom Hanks he'll see him later, but he never will because Andrew Beckett had to die :( I cry everytime I watch this movie.
One thing I loved in both The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia is how often Demme will utilize these incredible facial shots where the characters look directly into camera and thus at the audience. So many beautiful moments in Silence are just shots of Lecter and Clarice speaking to each other "face to face", i.e. to you. Too often directors only seem to do this when they want to intentionally break the 4th wall. But here Demme let's us enjoy brief, yet powerful vicarious moments. Exquisite
I guess this movie was groundbreaking. I remember seeing it in the theater when I was a kid and during this scene a woman ran out of the theater crying very loudly. It was really sad because she had probably lost someone to AIDS.
the part were he puts the mask on is the part were denzel puts all of his pre conditioned and pre conceived ideas away and shows him HUMAN COMPASSION and love. this whole scene is very very hard to watch its emotional
Seriously one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it’s my favorite Denzel movie. God does he play the everyday person that struggles with acceptance. Such a unique character that shows the heart of all human beings. I wish more movies were like this. I truly love all of mankind because of this movie and the love of my family. One love ❤️
With all due respect to the outstanding and continuing talent of Bruce Springsteen, in my opinion, Neil Young’s song “Philadelphia” was the better of the two stand out performances from the soundtrack and more worthy of the Oscar that year.
Daniel was AMAZING. Even he would have to admit that throughout the shooting of Philadelphia he was the second best actor on the film. Tom Hanks was beyond exceptional.
The corona virus is lethal to those who are immuno-surpressed, today. I dare you to make that same quip to their face and not in the comment section. Because, most won't have the luxury to die amongst family, friends and colleagues. Funny, huh? I'm glad you made me laugh on my way out.

Rewatched recently and forgot how much of Denzel’s character’s change is shown and not told; he never has a big speech where he renounces former prejudices. Besides being able to touch Andy’s face after initially wanting to be nowhere near him, a nice detail in this scene is he brings a bottle of Dom. Earlier in the movie when his daughter his born he requests Dom for the occasion and then changes his mind when he hears the cost; now he brings it for a man who used to disgust him. Maybe it’s as simple as he’s going to make money off the case, but I think it’s intentional and a detail I hadn’t noticed before.
Tom Hanks rightfully deserves all the accolades for his performance in this movie, but Denzel Washington deserves it too. He plays somebody who we'd probably understand, not having much knowledge of AIDS and being a bigot (less understandable). His transformation from that into a personal friend of somebody he was afraid of at the start of the movie is astounding. Plus, props to Denzel for being willing to play such a character; it puts a human face on people like that. Makes a stronger case that we are all human; Denzel and Tom are just as human as each other.
This entire scene and the ending gets me so much because I have lost a few relatives to cancer, a best friend to suicide, a number of guys under my command, my former partner and our twin daughters to a car accident, and a dog called Benson, when you can value life so much as I do now, it feels your eyes with tears 😭 and that feeling in your heart when you watch a great movie like this

I watched this again on Encore yesterday and only ever seen it one time. I get the impression that here in the end, Denzel embraced him for who he was. Denzel wasn't into that "lifestyle" and honestly neither am I, but clearly (from the costume party) they are a tight knit kind of people and just because they're different doesn't mean they're wrong. I think Denzel sees that when seeing Andrew laying there on his death bed, and looks PAST what he did (being careless and having unprotected sex) and realizes this is a good man who has a lot of people who care about him and love him. The part where he finally dies is almost like a relief since his suffering was now over. I notice the part where Antonio Banderas yells "you're only making it WORSE" to the hospital staff, which quickly reminded me of Dallas Buyer's Club. Both are very good films that deal with HIV/AIDS and the misconceptions regarding the disease (which may or may not be created by the government).
I'd go further -- though I think Hanks single-handedly carries this film, the true genius of Denzel's performance is that his character never truly feels comfortable around "the lifestyle," or "the disease," but feels compelled (and forces himself) to defend him/them/it anyway. The syrupy sweet storybook ending would have been for the Joe Miller character to suddenly be 'okay' with the whole subculture -- but, in this scene, he's clearly not, even while celebrating his courtroom victory, even while wishing his colleague well -- and that makes the ending all the better IMO.
