Thanks for compiling this, appreciate it! Just one correction: Blade Ward and True Strike aren’t runners-up; they’re the “avoid at all costs” cantrips (at least for now - they’re much better in the 2024 PHB)
Loving these rankings planning to play a bard next and the letting the prepared casters focus on things they can get easily is a smart idea that I dunno why I haven’t thought of earlier
If there are enemies attacking me with bows, I always cast mage hand to take all their remaining arrows from their back. Works every time and is super effective.
You technically don't need tongues as a bard because if you use Universal Speech which all bards and can be used on as many creatures equal to your charisma score, and if you get Comprehend Languages which can be used as a ritual so you basically get the same affect for the same amount of time for basically nothing which can save your third levels for either upcasting another spell or using a third level spell. I guess the downside is if you already used Universal Speech you need to long rest to recover it or you can expend a spell slot to get it back instantly so you would be using 2 spell slots for an extra hour of this, unless you cast Comrehend Languages as a ritual then its only 1 spell slot.
Another great video! Though this one I find a bit more controversial then the previous one, but it's probably just some personal preferences :P As to somewhat traditional tips on video quality: 1. To start with the easiest: the effect of detect thought is barely readable at 6:57 and style change feels odd, especially considering that most of the screenshots are from D&D Beyond. I think it would look better if you'd stick to one style. Maybe even creating a new template for videos like this? Could be useful if you would want to put X/5 on the screen, just sayin' 2. you've definitely got rid of breathing and other noises… but now it's tooooooo quiet. My guess is that you're using a pop filter while witting too far away from a microphone. Background noise also backs up this assumption. Yes, I remember that I suggested a bigger distance, but it is sometimes mutually exclusive with pop filter:) This is why you can often see singers in music videos almost eating their pop filters. Though it all depends on the microphone and it's sensitivity. Also I would suggest Reaper one more time, since it has plugins to get rid of the noise as well as to compress sound so it would be louder. Of course, you do what you have to, but if you'd want to use reaper to clear background noise, I can suggest this short guide: ua-cam.com/video/HEY9XIYJtGg/v-deo.html (it's already with a relevant timestamp, though video is short enough to watch all of it)
Thanks! Yea, still trying to thread that needle with audio quality. No pop filter addition, just increased mic distance and aggressive EQ adjustments (probably too aggressive :P). I might give Reaper a go, but honestly, these videos already take quite a long time to make, so I'd like to figure out a solution that stops the problem at its source rather than relying on (more) post-recording edits (also $). As for the change in style, that's an unfortunate problem that DnD Beyond doesn't have all the spells on it. Roll20 seemed worse than the screenshot from my site, and Wikidot didn't have it either, so I went with what I had. I'd just go all Wikidot, but then they also don't have all the spells :\ I've also considered spell cards (www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/7ygbag/5eoc_by_popular_demand_reupload_of_all_300_spell/) but those are also limited to SRD afaik, so I'd still run into the same problem for Xanathar's/Tasha's spells. Good call on including X/5, too. Will do that in the future!
@@dndlounge, Reaper has infinite trial if money is your main concern ;) While it is not very good to use it this way, I personally think that this is better since it can help your channel grow and possibly earn enough money to afford to buy it. Also about post-recording edits: I have set up my noise cancelling plugin once (!), it took me like 15 minutes to set it up including 5 minutes of looking for tutorial and 5 minutes of staring at the ceiling. That's it, now it just works. Ofc, if I change my surroundings than the noise also changes, but it's literally a 30 sec fix. And I doubt that you move from one appartment to another on a daliky basis ;) Can say similar things about other plugins, but they required a lot more time to set up. But I'd say that at this stage they are absolutely optional
For what it's worth you have sold me on Seeming since I would have otherwise overlooked it since a successful Illusion check negates it wasting the spell/slot.
Surprised not to see heat metal rated higher. Sure it only work on creatures wearing either metal weapons or armor, but it's crazy strong when they do. 2D8 fire damage as a BONUS action each turn + disadvantage on all atack and ability checks is nothing to look down upon, and the upcast scales pretty great too.
Minor illusion should replace one of the cantrips. Its use as cover during a fight makes it great to have. Currently I have V.M, Pres, and M.I, and I don't know which Ill pick when I get another, Probably not thunder clap due to its short range, and not mage hand since one in our party already has it, leaning towards message. I'm not one for questioning people I leave that insight for others so I also would never take Detect thoughts. And in my current campaign We have 1 full Cleric, 1 multiclass Cleric and a Devine soul sorcerer, So I wont pick as one of my few known spells to be raise dead. But since Bards only have so many known spells, eliminating those few still leaves more than I can actually pick lol, really good list.
@@dndlounge sound editing is hard and with how inconsistent most software is, I do not know how you people do it. Last sound editing software that I found to be worth a damn stopped working with any operating systems after Windows XP.
Honestly, I would dip one or two levels into Bard with a Bladesinger just to add Vicious Mockery to their tool set. Attack, then use your Bladesinger's Extra Attack feature to cast Vicious Mockery, thus giving your opponent Disadvantage on attacking you, with your already ridiculous AC.
Cantrips:
- Vicious Mockery
- Prestidigitation
- Mage Hand
- Message
- Thunderclap
Runners Up: Minor Illusion, Friends, Light, Dancing Lights, Mending, Blade Ward, True Strike
1st level:
- Faerie Fire
- Dissonant Whispers
- Healing Word
- Bane
- Thunderwave
Runners Up: Sleep, Hideous Laughter, Comprehend Languages
2nd level:
- Detect Thoughts
- Invisibility
- Hold Person
- Aid
- Shatter
Runners Up: Enhance Ability, Enlarge/Reduce, Knock, Silence, Phantasmal Force, Suggestion, Lesser Restoration
3rd level:
- Hypnotic Pattern
- Slow
- Tiny Hut
- Tongues
- Enemies Abound
Runners Up: Fear, Dispel Magic, Clairvoyance, Sending
4th level:
- Polymorph
- Greater Invisibility
- Dimension Door
- Freedom of Movement
- Phantasmal Killer
Runners Up: Charm Monster, Confusion
5th level:
- Animate Objects
- Synaptic Static
- Raise Dead
- Hold Monster
- Seeming
Runners Up: Rary's Telepathic Bond, Dominate Person, Greater Restoration, Scrying

Another great ranking, thank you! This has made things clearer for me as a dm and player

Bards should have thaumaturgy, like c'mon, brights and proyected voice?

Did something happen to your microphone or did your recording settings get changed? You're a lot quieter than you have been in previous videos.
Recorded from a farther distance + did some post-recording stuff to deal with other audio issues, but looks like I took it a bit too far!

It’s a steeper learning curve than I expected, but I’m trying to enjoy the process. Also gives me more respect for the creators who make it look easy
I recommend getting a better mic or fixing your sound. you are very quiet and mumbley
